Guest guest
We may start doing a sensory processing / sequencing program for my son, who is just 6 with pdd-nos, and does act out at times. For him, it seems like he does it when he is really tired from or also when he has been overstimulated. It is called nacd- www.nacd.org, I know some about it, and have to research it more, but it works kids through these things. My son also has low lithium levels, which I am told is from not being in the natural water supply, we can supplement with non- script lithium orotate- (a very low dose that supplements to a level that most people are at, not the same as giving lithium otherwise), but have not done so yet. For my son, we have not done any behavioral interventions with him, because what little behavioral things we have tried for him have all been futile- NOT saying they are for every child. It seems there are other root causes for these actions that have to be addressed for him first, that may help correct these things as well. Otherwise, it has felt like working backwards to us. This is just our case with our son, hope it helps. Angie pinalowenstein <pinalowenstein@...> wrote: I have a 4 1/2 year old boy who was diagnosed with mild autism by age of 2. Now another doctor mentioned that he is the typical case of ADHD and that he has sensory integration problems as part of it as well. Now he has behavior problems, hits, kicks, yells, and cries when frustrated of upset. This has gone on for almost two years and no matter what behavior plan is put into effect his behaviors start again. His language is increasing but so is his imitation of cartoon voices, etc. We are now taking him to another neurologist and we have not found anyone that we could relate to or that has had a similar situation. Guest guest
It sounds to me like there are also underlying language issues--both comprehension and expressive issues--they can play heavily into behavioral issues. Do you have a good speech-language pathologist who can help you recognize what he understands, etc? Guest guest
Hello- My son has sensory problems as well, and we do not really do OT for this, and I do not recall if I emailed prior a program called nacd at www.nacd.org . I know some about it and I think it work through typical sensory stages that our kids may have missed, like a 2 year old, tactile, etc. Another mom in it said they work on sensory processing and getting the kids up to their level with being able to process things. This was an issue more with my son when he was a bit younger, he knew language, but did not seem to " get " it, and I do think it resulted in more acting out. They set up home programs for parents and kids also with monthly support, which does come with a fee. We are tyring this for my son's sensory issues,as well as fixing the biomedical, because his stims are very high and he does act out with overstimulated. Thought I would just pass this on, and hope it is not a repeat! Angie Cheryl Lowrance <c.lowrance@...> wrote: What are your current therapies? Guest guest
Hi Angie, I am currently evaluating a program close to us that, I think, does the same thing as www.nacd.org. The one I'm considering is www.brainhighways.com. Can you tell if they are similar? Guest guest
Kristy- Thanks for the webiste you sent, I am going to take a look at it also. Another program fr these problems is HANDLE at www.handle.org. I am curious as to what brain highways philosophy is, and so do not know if they are familiar. From talking to people, it seem that the idea of kids getting stressed out from the environment and stimulus is there, but how do you work through it. We are doing a program that does NOT push the kids through these things that stress them, but instead, teach their systems how to respond to changes in a way that shows their systems a different way to respond, calm and not stress reaction. The idea also is NOT to teach them to just tolerate stimulus either, which does not get at the underlying problems, in my opinion. I based the decision on this also. Sometimes, I think it is a matter of trying things out too, after all of the research is done. NACD also provides support via video during the month. I know for my son, stims are a huge problem. I think they are partly from a physiologic problem, like a PANDAS problem, but also wonder if they have become behavioral. NACD has the philosophy of them also being addicting and a " high " , along with sensory addictions. I can see this is true with my son also. They help the kids work through stages also. Does this sound like brain highways? We are seriously considering doing also, and I think it will help with this too.
