Guest guest
Our son's hearing is super sensitive as well ... We allow him to cover up his ears and block out the sounds with ear phones. His IPOD touch has helped tremendously ... It looks " normal " to walk around with earphones in your ears when you are listening to soft music ... that helps to filter out miserable sounds. We had to teach him to accept the earphones, but it was worth it. Yeast in the ears leads to sensitive hearing issues too. Treat the yeast and things will get better also. Guest guest
We had success with the Berard Method, an offshoot of Tomatis. For my daughter it included an initial hearing evaluation and a tape based on that evaluation. She listened ~15min. 2x/day. Retesting was scheduled every 3mos for approx 1.5y with a new tape to listen to. The sounds were absolutely disgusting to my ear! She went from a flat line hearing curve[no discrimination/filtering] to a normal curve. Normal dominant ear was also established - this was explained as the difference between using a direct highway to get from point A to B vs. using many back roads in the brain. For less than approx $500, it was one of the best interventions we did. > > > Hi, > My 16 year old autistic grandson has severe hyperacusis (very sensitive hearing). Guest guest
Hi, Bill! As says, the Berard training is noted to be good for this. Probably not necessary to say, but make sure an excellent ENT person has made sure there is no persistent wax deposits in the ears that can contribute if not actually cause hyperacusis. Jaquelyn ________________________________ To: csb-autism-rx Sent: Wed, June 22, 2011 4:13:31 AM Subject: Hyperacusis  Hi, My 16 year old autistic grandson has severe hyperacusis (very sensitive hearing). Guest guest
A retained neonatal rreflex, the Moro Reflex in particular, can lead to hyperacusis as well. ________________________________ To: csb-autism-rx Sent: Wed, June 22, 2011 12:37:09 PM Subject: Re: Hyperacusis Our son's hearing is super sensitive as well ... Guest guest
Ironically one reason Hyperacusis might be a problem is that it can be a symptom of hearing loss, hope this is not the case here, as hearing loss is rarely uniform across the frequencies, i.e. if lower frequencies are impaired, higher frequencies can seem unusually loud, piercing and uncomfortable it might be worth a visit to an ENT doc if your grandson is reasonably compliant. Guest guest
Hi Dr McCandless,  As my 16-year old daughter is on anti-psychotic medication (Quetiapine, Epilim etc), will auditory integration therapy (AIT) / Berard Training -  affect her behaviour adversely ?  Thank you in advance for your advice.  Kind regards,  Judy To: csb-autism-rx Sent: Thursday, June 23, 2011 4:45 AM Subject: Re: Hyperacusis  Hi, Bill! Guest guest
My granddaughter undertook it while on Risperdal and benefited - I see no reason why there should be a problem. If anyone else has experience please share it. Guest guest
My daughter was on anti convulsants during the time she did this. We saw no increase in seizures/neuro irritability. I can only say good things for it. > > My granddaughter undertook it while on Risperdal and benefited - I see no reason > why there should be a problem. Guest guest
Wow, never heard of it that inexpensive. It runs around $1200 to $1600 from what I've heard. > > > > > > Hi, > > My 16 year old autistic grandson has severe hyperacusis (very sensitive hearing). Guest guest
Yes, we paid 1500.00 dollars for it ... and it did not help my son at all. He enjoyed the experience ... but he still covers his ears in pain .. Melinda > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > My 16 year old autistic grandson has severe hyperacusis (very sensitive hearing). Guest guest
http://www.actg.org/ A Chance to Grow in Minneapolis did the auditory retraining for my daughter. The testing and follow through was done by a master's prepared audiologist. The tapes are made after testing so are child specific. They were sent in the mail within a week of testing. Improvements for us were apparent on the second testing[3mos] and kept getting better until there was a normal hearing curve and a correct ear dominance. As I posted initially, it took us about 1.5y to get the recommended response. They may know of similar resources in other communities. > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > My 16 year old autistic grandson has severe hyperacusis (very sensitive hearing).
