My son had a reaction to augmentin and the ped noted it as an allergy to

penicillin. He was about 2 1/2 and had just started regressing in ASD at 2, and

was being treated for an ear infection (his 2nd one so he had not been on many

antibiotics previously). On about day 2 he started getting these whelps and on

day three they were huge and swollen. I didn't think he was having breathing

issues but took him to a care center and they said the inflammation could start

inside if left untreated since the swelling/whelps were only getting worse. He

received a steroid shot and over the next few days everything was gone...but he

also had seemed to develop sensory integration disorder which we hadn't seen yet

(maybe he would have anyway, but it did coincide w/the augmentin).

Since then, the rare times he's been on antibiotics it has been zythromax and

bactrim and he's been fine with both. Our doc said that my son could have been

allergic to something in the augmentin besides the penicillin and we did use

omoxicillin (sp?) once 4 years after the reaction which my son did okay with

aside from it tearing up his gut (which was bad enough). But, I can tell you, I

wouldn't have trusted my reg. ped. to prescribe this....it was our DAN doc who

seemed so much aware of the side effects and reactions our kids have to certain

meds. I had a biomed. friend make an interesting comment when I told her about

his reaction to the augmentin...she said we could have provoked something like

lyme and that was the reaction we were seeing, not just an allergy reaction.
