Guest guest
hello all, the last 7 months have been a whirl wind for my family. We have a son who is 11 yrs old, that was diagnosed 7 months ago with having ; for the last 8 yrs of my son's life I knew that something was different about him but I couldn't get anyone to understand or even go past the idea of a (what the schooled called) normal learning disorder. We took him to a new doctor and she herself has had both her son's to see Dr. Goldberg as pt's since both of them have . So, lucky for me I was connected with someone who knew my frustration and concerned that he was going to be lost in the school system forever. I can say that since we have started following simple steps of first starting with the food allergens then he was put on Prozac what an amazing turn around we have seen. I know that there is so much more to learn and to grow but I am so excited that we have found the right path. Bekki
Guest guest
HI everyone, I just had a few questions regarding Celexa and Prozac. We have been on Celexa for a while now and Dr. G may want to try Prozac. I am trying to decide if I want to switch. We tried Paxil and Zoloft in the past, both were not good. My son is very sharp, but not as sharp as before, this being why we are contemplating switching. We are having more yelling and outbursts, especially when playing competitive sports. If any of you have tried these, let me know what worked for you. I greatly appreciate your input. My son is almost 5 yrs old. Guest guest
Hi Noel, It's my understanding that the SSRIs are so individual, and that what works well for one won't work for another. We switched my son from Prozac to Paxil about a month ago, and I'm still not sure whether it was a good switch or not. He's on such a low dose, just 1/2 tablet, but I'm still pondering whether to request a reduction and possibly seeing if we can get him off them all together. We tried slightly increasing the Prozac for a time before the switch, but that didn't go well at all. Guest guest
Noel, My son is different than yours. He has moderate asd and limited language. He is 4 1/2. When we started prozac in May(a switch from celexa) we had an almost immediate burst in language. After a week of incredible gains (language and attention mostly) we started seeing more autistic behaviors . .. .more stimming and a recurrence of stims. We stopped prozac and returned to celexa but saw no notable improvements. Now after a month of celexa we are on week three of prozac. He is better in some ways on prozac (rate of learning, attention, language) but the stims are not gone. Dr. G says not to worry about the stims but of course I am because they make him stand out. Dr. G wants to try zoloft next, but frankly I am scared to do it because of so many mixed reviews, and because it is so hard to go backwards. This is probably not a super helpful email but thought I would chime in since we are on prozac now. I guess the only way to know is to try it. Guest guest
Hi Martha, We switched my son from Prozac to Paxil and stims went WAY up. Around the same time of the switch, he started eating a lot more than usual of peanut butter and corn (mostly popcorn). I took him off both and stims are waaaaay down. Don't know if this is helpful or not. Kristy From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Martha Wood Sent: Monday, July 20, 2009 1:14 PM Subject: Re: Re: SSRI Noel, My son is different than yours. Guest guest
I took a combination of low doses of three different SSRIs to achieve improvement in both language and self stim behavior. IMHO, self stims are probably going to be the last behavior improvement many of us see in our kids. For my son, they are a coping mechanism when too much is coming at him at once. They also increase with dietary infractions. I know it's hard to see them going backwards, but for us, it's been worth it to see if switching the SSRI would bring improvement. We always have to wait at least two weeks before seeing any type of improvement and the first 10 days is usually full of lots of stimming and some outbursts before we see any real changes. I can usually tell my the second week if something is or isn't going to work.
