National Birth Defect Registry was founded by Betty and Mike Mekdeci,

parents whose " son was born with birth defects in 1975. " (1-2) Alice

Shabecoff and Philip Shabecoff are co-authors of an important book,

" POISONED FOR PROFIT: How Toxins Are Making Our Children Chronically Ill

(3). Alice and Betty are launching a project whose preliminary data will

reflect overlaps (if any) among children with one of the ASDs and

children with a mild or severe birth defect.

Here is their project announcement, and it is attached in doc format for

lists that allow attachments. This post may be forwarded hither & yon.

Help Identify Environmental Triggers

Research by /National Birth Defect Registry/

Birth Defects Research for Children was founded 30 years ago by a mother

whose son was born with limb defects and no one could (or would) tell

her and her husband what the cause might have been. She eventually worked

with a team of seven prominent scientists to develop a registry for

parents to fill out about their child's disabilities, their prenatal

health and family history, and exposures during pregnancy. The registry

now has over 3,000 cases. With enough cases in the registry, patterns

emerge showing an association between a childhood chronic illness and

environmental exposures.

Although autism is not thought of as a birth defect, in some cases

children with ASDs also have physical birth defects or minor physical

anomalies. Important findings about both autism and birth defects can

arise if we understand better the possible connection between these

disorders and their possible causes.

That's why I'm writing to ask families with children with autism to

participate in the registry. We ask you to respond whether or not your

child has only autism or also shows indications of a birth defect.

Clink on this link, https://www.birthdefects.org/registry/ to find the

registry and frequently asked questions about it, and a slide

presentation that shows how the registry works. If you are comfortable

with entering data about your child, click on the red check mark in the

middle of the page and just follow the instructions from there.
