Hi, Shari: Primal Defense may be too strong for many children, and parents do

report " die-off " experiences with many different varieties of probiotics. I

highly recommend Klaire's Therbiotics; for the ASD kids who can swallow

capsules, one a day of the Therbiotics Complete (always taken with food) works

for maintaining most kids. I think they have powder forms for kids who cannot

swallow caps. When chelating, I also give one cap a day (again with food) of

Therbiotics Detox. Actually I believe everyone does better with regular use of

probiotics.

Thanks for asking about Chelsey, who was just 18. She is dear beyond words,

smart, funny, loves anything electronic, and sadly is still too impaired to yet

live an independent life - her problems are primarily social. She reads,

writes, and spells well but never talks about feelings or questions other's

feelings. She will leave her special needs school soon where she has been for

many years and now start attending a place in Phoenix called One Step Beyond,

where they have computer classes as well as many classes teaching young adults

how to shop, cook, and other chores of living. I will never stop looking for

anything that might help her. I want to try oxytocin again; I was afraid just

as she was entering puberty to give her much of it, but want to try again now

that she is older. Does your girl use it? Dr. JM

Subject: probiotics

What is the best probiotic and the best form (capsule, powder,

refrigerated)? Also, can a probiotic " cause " a die off reaction which can

cause a spacy reaction? Our daughter is 17 and we have used Primal Defense

powder for years but she can only tolerate a very tiny amount or she will

space out. I hoped she would gradually be able to increase but maybe I need

to change products. Thank you for any suggestions.

And, Dr. McCandless, it has been a while since I've posted. How is your

granddaughter? I often think of her because she and our daughter are close

in age.

Thank you so much for the information..

Neathery does not use oxytocin and she still hasn’t started her period, yet.

She is working 3 hours per week for her Occupational Therapist in her office.

She sweeps, takes out trash, washes dishes, and is starting to do a little

office work – making copies and filing. One Step Beyond sounds like it may do

the same thing for Chelsey. We have a wonderful OT who takes Neathery out to eat

at different places such as Osaka’s where can try new foods and textures,

learn to use chop sticks (hands shake), place her own order and pay for it. She

still needs help with the money part and she still doesn’t like meat very much

but she is really doing well with the new activities. The office is all women

and they take her shopping at the mall to try on new clothes and help her figure

out what size she needs. Things like that.

She is still a HUGE responder to music. She listens every day. We are using

Vital Sounds – the Sheila Frick protocol. Her OT uses it while combining

certain music with vestibular and other activities. We also use vision therapy

(Vision Builder) for the computer is great. We were taught to stop music after

10 days and wait at least 9 months but Neathery is such a sensitive responder

that we use it every day twice daily. I remember Chelsey likes music.

She has never tried oxytocin or HBOT. I know the social issues are hard to face.

We applied and received permanent guardianship of her so we can help her after

she turns 18. I keep thinking maybe she will change a little when she starts

her period or something but right now she is still a little girl on the inside.

Although, I have been surprised that she is accomplishing so much with her OT

which gives me hope. I have also noticed that she is more socially engaging when

she is stress free. That sounds cliché but it is really true for her. I just

never know when those few and far between moments will happen. It reminds me

almost of PTSD – I think her body and mind have fought so hard for so long in

this battle that she doesn’t really understand what peace is. Anyway, when she

is completely stress free she is like a different person – almost like when

she has fever.
