,

Sleep problem is common for Zoloft. My son had it 4/5 years ago. After

a while without improvement, we move on to Next SSRI.

It's common to have sleep issues for about he first week or two with

ssri's. If it continues longer than that, you might want to consider

switching. When we first started zoloft we had practically no sleep

for the 2 weeks. It resolved after that.

Hi -

Boy it really varies a lot how one child will react to

one thing but another thrive on it. We started Paxil

in my 6yr old a few months back and it kept him awake

late (which I have very little tolerance for), so we

switched (not thru Dr G-here locally) to Zoloft and

the sleep issue went away immediately. (But I will

say that it is also hard to say for sure that it was

the Paxil and not just a spell, or that feeling better

made him stay awake more too.)

Last time, same kid, I think I remembered it was the

Zoloft that kept him awake and he had done best on

Paxil that time, while his brother did better on

Zoloft.

It is also my understanding that the sleep issues will

resolve in a couple of weeks. I do think if we had

stayed on it longer it would have gone away too.

Our sleep issues have not resolved, our girl is awake most nights for

at least an hour. This has been going on for at least a year.

Dr. G is aware of it and hasn't seemed worried. Should I be worried?

Hi MIchelle -

If you're not worried, I wouldn't add worry. If it is

seriously inconvenient, only then would I consider a

change if everything else that you see as a benefit

from the SSRI outweighs that problem.

If it is consistent and you can count on her going to

sleep at a regular time even if it takes a while,

that's not a bad thing, as long as it is not a nightly

battle where you feel dread as you see bedtime coming

up.

Thanks . I guess I do think it's a problem but there isn't

much we can do about it. She goes to sleep fine but then wakes up in

the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep for a bit of

time. Dr. G told us to treat it as a behavior and, against our

instincts, we did this. Nothing changed since it's not a behavior

but a result of the meds. I worry about her falling asleep in school

(this was happening last year) because there is only so long

a little body can go without sleep! Just add it to my list of worries!

Have a good weekend,

Don;t assume it is the meds. When my son was 3.4 an 5

before we started any meds our biggest headache was

sleep issue just from the brain inflamation/autism. He

would wake up and sing/vocalize and stim endlessly.

Looking back it was similar to a mild toothach that

would be tolerable during the day and become

intolerable at night. Connor just didn't feel well and

could not sleep at times.

It was the antiviral that after several months allowed

him to rest well. We are now on Zolof with no sleeep

issues.

I have to agree with Bill. My son had major sleep issues when he

started the protocal. It took a little while, but his sleep issues

have resolved. He's on Celexa, but I can't tell that it has any

negative affect on his sleep.
