Guest guest
I don't know about the dosage at all (and you don't mention how old/big your son is), but I do know Dr. G started my son on a SSRI very, very slowly. Very small dose, then worked up 1/8 to 1/4 tablet at a time. Kristy My son is on an SSRI now - questions Hi All! My son's child psychiatrist put him on Prozac. He is taking 5 mg. per day. My son is seeming to be acting a little more out of it. He is having staring spells, but I don't think that it is seizure activity since I can break the staring spells. Has anyone else seen this when starting an SSRI? What were some of gains that you saw when your child went on an SSRI? We are hoping for less aggression, more compliance, less OCD, more sociability with other children and definitely more speech. Am I being realistic? Probably not, but I do hope to get at least some of these things happening while he is on the medicine. I must add that my son is on Acyclovir, Diflucan and mb-12 shots along with the Prozac. Guest guest
Does any one know if the doses (regardless of knowing the mg's) are still less than typical doses used for depression, etc. in children? Guest guest
Hi, Dr. G is not for M-B12 shots at all....also for approx. 3 weeks starting the SSRI, these things can be pretty normal, ie starring spells etc....more aggressive, spacey, it takes some time for it to work...hope this helps..Noel angie huiz <angiehuiz@...> wrote: Does any one know if the doses (regardless of knowing the mg's) are still less than typical doses used for depression, etc. in children? Guest guest
Yes, Dr. G says it generally stays around 1/2 the typical dose when you get to full dose but keep in mind there is a range for what is " typical " . Typical dose for children is generally between 50 - 200 mgs (I know that's a wide range but it can go as high as 200) of Zoloft - sorry, I haven't looked into the others so I'll be referencing Zoloft. I tend to think that the average " typical " dose is probably more around 100 mgs than 50 mgs. Sometimes Dr. G does it a little higher than half, sometimes it's lower, it just depends on the child. I know my son is on the high end. My son is on 43.75 mgs and this is a test run to see if we need to switch. He was on 37.5 mgs and we decided to see if we could see more gains with one more increase and if not, we will switch so you won't see him ever go higher than the lowest dose for children. Also, a typical dr. tends to start too high and work up too fast. Dr. G starts off *very* low and increases *very* slowly. We've been on this protocol for 1.5 years and have just now gotten up to this dosage. I wanted to also let everyone know that this is his 2nd day of the increase and *wow*! Gryffin's a little chatterbox today! He's stringing together 4 and 5 sentences! All morning long he's just been talking like mad! He's a little spacey but it looks like the increase will likely be okay for him. As long as the spaciness goes away within a week we should be golden. Guest guest
I don't know about dosage on Prozac but I can tell you that acting spacey or zoney is common for the first week or two. It takes a bit of time to adjust to it. My son gets huge gains overall on them but the most prevalent one generally deals with speech and receptive/expressive language. He gets more language with every increase we've made. My son was never OCD or aggressive so I can't comment there but I would imagine it would be helpful. I thought zoloft helped more with OCD than prozac, though. I could be completely taking out of my rear on that so don't take my word for it! He's also always been social so I don't know about that one, either. He just gets better at being social with the language gains. I think you'll find more compliance with language gains as language and communication is a big part of compliance. I think you are being realistic to hope for those gains and I think it's possible. It's too bad nothing can come with a guarantee, though. cheryl On Mar 20, 2008, at 7:53 AM, jenniferreif1 wrote: > Hi All! > > My son's child psychiatrist put him on Prozac. Guest guest
Thanks Everyone1 My son is 5 and is about 48 pounds. His teacher told me that he wasn't himself in PT today and he was mixing up the color words (he knows all of his color words) Neither my husband nor myself has had any experience with Prozac. I am on Zoloft and my husband on Lexapro. I know that when I first started Zoloft, it revved me up and I felt jumpy and sort of lightheaded and nauseous. My husband, on the other hand, never felt a thing starting Lexapro. Just depends on the person I guess. It is good to know that the staring spells most likely are not seizures. Thanks! Guest guest
We started our son on Paxil in very small dosages and saw a small 'die off' (rubbing his head along the carpet- being very spacey) and then nothing. We switched him to Zoloft and are seeing some changes in him. He is becoming increasingly frustrated (which is great because he now recognizes there's a lot going on around him and it's passing him by) and some babbling (at 4 he has NO language/communication). We started at a 1/4, increased two weeks ago to 1/2 and will increase tomorrow to 3/4. The teachers and therapists all note that the most progress they've seen with him has been in the last month and a half or so, which is when we started the Zoloft. We too are hoping for better attention and of course language, and hope it'll come. He's a very 'laid back' child, and now is very frustrated, having tantrums and definately asserting himself at getting what he wants. He is also on iron, Famvir and Nizerol, so it could be the combination of all of these things, but I truly believe the Zoloft is 'waking his brain' and allowing us to see frustration- which is progress! Good luck!
