FOX26 News Presents " Life with Autism "

KHOU Channel 11 'Great Day Houston' presents " Autism and Vaccinations "

KRIV FOX26 will present “Life with Autism,” a documentary series focusing on

the daily struggles faced by Houston families living with Autism. The six-part

series will begin Sunday, April 27th on “FOX26 News at 9:00 p.m.”

“Life with Autism” will highlight treatment breakthroughs along with

misunderstood causes and symptoms of the condition, as well as take a candid

look at the toll faced by families as they battle the challenges placed on them

by the lack of resources provided to them by the state. In addition to the

nightly special reports, guests from the series will appear on upcoming “FOX26

Morning News” broadcasts, beginning Monday, April 28th.

Fox26's dedication to Houston's special needs community began in 2007, when

the station embarked on a year-long series that exposed the legal and

administrative challenges facing parents with special needs children in Texas.

" Denied: Special Needs in Texas " featured a sequence of reports ranging from

school districts and child care providers failing to provide mandated services

to abuse allegations in facilities catering to children with special needs.

KRIV FOX26 and KTXH My20 are part of the Fox Television Stations group, one of

the nation's largest owned-and-operated network broadcast groups, comprising 35

stations in 26 markets and covering nearly 45% of U.S. television homes. This

includes six duopolies in the top 10 markets: New York , Los Angeles , Chicago ,

Dallas , Washington D.C. and Houston ; as well as duopolies in Minneapolis ,

Phoenix and Orlando .

Scholarship Opportunity Update:

Our scholarship deadline has passed, and during the first couple of weeks in

May, those who were selected will be receiving notification if we were able to

help them. Each person who applied, will receive a response....

On behalf of our officers, board, and scholarship selection committee, we were

honored to be able to offer this opportunity. It THRILLED us officers to be

able to do this! However, we were saddened that we could not help everyone, but

we helped as many as we could. We hope to be able to do the same thing next

April.

How you can be a part of that " Show me the money " ??? Become a member of our

chapter! Everyone's small membership fee, together adds up to allow us to do

big things!

You can help by attending our annual conference and paying that small

registration fee to allow us to cover costs associated with putting together a

conference. If you are an agency, organization, business, or service provider

- your exhibitor fee helps cover costs in running our chapter and allows for us

to use any extra money for a scholarship opportunity.

May meeting reminder for the Northwest Houston area:

Thursday, May 1st, is the monthly Autism/Asperger/PDD Parent & Professional

Networking Group Monthly Meeting - from 7-9pm.

Texas Education Agency - Ron and Swick, investigators for the

complaints division, will be our featured speakers! We are honored to have

them help us understand the complaint process for Special Education Issues.

This will be our LAST MEETING UNTIL AUGUST - so if you have a book from our

Lending Library to return, or need resources or questions answered on anything

related to Autism Spectrum Disorders, -- please plan to be there!

For our monthly meetings at Graceview Baptist Church:

We are very blessed that " The JOY Ministry " of Graceview Baptist Church is

providing childcare during these meetings. If you are a single parent and need

childcare to attend, or if you have no other childcare options, we welcome you

free. You must register for childcare by Wednesday of the week of the meeting.

I would like to close this month's newsletter with a very special

congratulations to Fleming, son of Vicki Fleming, - who together with

her husband has serve faithfully as leaders of the Greater Houston Chapter of

the Autism Society of America. Fleming will be graduating in May! Our

best wishes to him, and to his parents, in this next phase of their " Life with

Autism " .

Speakers: Ron and Swink. Both are complaint investigators with

the Division of IDEA Coordination at the Texas Education Agency. They will

provide valuable information for parents on how to file a complaint with TEA, if

you have unresolved issues with ARD Meetings, etc.

As with each meeting, we will have a separate area where if parents have

questions other than what the presenter is speaking about - you will be welcome

to talk with one of us separately.
