School Board Meeting

Hello listmates,

Just looking for some ideas/insights.

Our school board is holding a meeting and vote tonight pretaining to budget cuts

for next school year (I just found out about it yesterday- it's been kept low

key). On the chopping block are the positions of 86 special education teachers,

107 paraprofessionals (special ed aides), and 173 locally funded teachers.

Of course the location for the school board meeting is at an elementary school

on the furtherest/out-of-the-way-side of the county. I'm talking within a mile

or so of the state line! I thought the meetings were tradionally held at the

school board office/auditorium... but that's another issue... I'm thinking they

don't want to make it easy for parents to attend.

Anyway... I tried searching through my copy of " From Emotions to Advocacy "

(s Law team) and didn't see anything about school board meetings or

district v. state v. federaly funded things.

I'm concerned that more than half of the cuts are in special education. Doesn't

the district get a lot of state/federal money to use FOR Special Education and

if so... are they going to redirect those funds to their own projects...?

Anyone out there have information or know of a resource to learn about such

budget concerns and/or funding for special education?

Thanks,

in Mobile, AL
