Can you tell me more about HANDLES? I've heard good things but what

exactly do you do? It sounds so strange from what I've read. How

did it help?

alot of tounge clicking at times which could develop into a tic.  We

see a practitioner that does HANDLE exercies that will address this

and help to avoid this happening.

are starting in Sept., but this has helped us start to re-train

his brain and go through normal developmental stages.  The website is

www.HANDLE.org.

This is just what we have found helpful.

Cheryl-

HANDLE stands for holistic approach to neurodevelopmental and learning

efficiancy.  You can type in handle.org or handleinstitute.org to get to the

main website.  It was created by a woman named Judith Bluestone and she wrote a

book " The Fabric of Autsim " .  She had some form of autism as a child.

The consultants have quite a bit of training and there are not many out there,

but they are listed on the webiste.

HANDLE was recommended to us by a nurse who also had an autistic child.  I have

heard a few other parents that do it also with good success.  It is necessary to

be committed to the program and do it daily in the right way.

We have been doing this since last Dec.  The first 3 months we saw only minimal

change, but I guess it takes a bit longer to have results.  Month 4-5 of our

program we had HUGE gains with my son, and this was really the only thing we

were doing at the time, no diet changes, new meds, etc.  I also did some

schooling, but felt his sensory issues had to be addressed first.

I had people making comments on how well he was doing and even an OT asking what

we were doing and became very interested in it.  Prior to this we also took my

son out of school as it seemed to stress him out, but this stress did also

continue at home, until a few months after doing the program.

After about the 4-5 months his learning went way up and he was much more

organized in brain functioning, etc.  Obvioulsy kids have there own rate of

success.  This was our experience.

The exercises did seem strange to me also at first, but the concept behind it

makes sense.  HANDLE is not the same at OT or other programs like brain gym (?)

or NACD.  IT works to fix root causes of problems and looks at the fight and

flight mechanism with kids.

The part on the webiste on " gentle enhancement " explains some of this.

Unfortunatley we moved and I was not that faithful at the exercieses for a few

weeks and then he was sick with some viral infection and from all these things

together has had a tounge click return again and frequent.  We are seeing our

consultant sooner as he said there are exercieses he may have to change so it

does not become a tic.

I hope this gives some information you are looking for.  Please email with any

more questions.

Angie

It is complex and does require a good consultant.  We are in WI and see

McNatt who is listed on the HANLDLE website, he is south of Chicago.

Sorry Cherly- I forgot to say how it helped.

I think it really helped my son with the organization of his brain and working

through some stages he had not done- like a tactile stage.  He also had less

stims, less OCD and more focus, better conversational language even.  It seemed

after all these things were more in place I saw a huge learning surge and just

overall being aware and not in his own world.

More focus also resulted in less hyperactivity.

What you do is exercises assigned by the consultant, they take me about 45 min a

day total.

I forgot I sent the prior email you had attached to this!!  Maybe I need handle

exercises too!!  Sorry if anything is a repeat.
