Guest guest
Before my son started swallowing pills I would crush it and put in ice cream. He didn't like it but he would at least eat it. I just took about a tablespoon of ice cream and mixed it together and he got that 3 times a day. He stopped asking for ice cream for a long time after he learned how to swallow them! Now he wants it again. The other thing I did was have it compounded after he got sick of the ice cream. At that point it just became tough love. I literally had to sit on top of him for many weeks and force it into him. Eventually he stopped fighting and I think the taste is also what led him to learn to swallow pills. I just tried it one day and he gagged on the first try but swallowed on the second. Easy sailing since. The Oralflo cup did not work out well for us. Guest guest
It is a many time a day battle in our house too! My son is many supplements and I have to devise creative ways to hide them...and just when I found a way I think works, he won't eat or drink it anymore. I too am about to pull my hair out. Sometimes I ask myself if the fighting and holding him down is doing psychological damage. This is a hard road. Guest guest
Have you tasted them? They are very bitter (like most meds). I had my son's compounded into a liquid (only orange and one other flavoring are allowed by Dr. G), squirted very small amounts in with a syringe, then gave him something afterwards to get rid of the taste and reward him when he cooperated. I got him to start swallowing pills around the time he was 4, and it really made life much easier. Guest guest
, I have a three year old that is taking Valtrex and it is gross! I grind it up and I put it in a teeny, tiny bit of frosting and that seems to hide the taste for her...and it's such a small amount that she can't taste it. I know sugar on this diet is a no-no but it is such a tiny amount and you gotta do what you gotta do! Also, our nurse told us DON'T put in in liquid, it doesn't dissolve and your kiddo won't get the dosage they need. Hope this helps, Jennie May the Lord bless you and keep you! Guest guest
Thanks everyone for replying. She is taking them cold turkey now followed by a drink to get rid of the taste. I feel bad but it's how it has to be. -- In , McGowen <dimcgowen22@...> wrote: > > It is a many time a day battle in our house too! Guest guest
We use the Oraflo pill cup to teach my middle son and youngest how to swallow pills. I know others have tried it with no success, but it worked like a charm for us. We tried hiding pills in everything from ice cream to peanut butter to applesauce but nothing worked. You may have to cut the pills as meds such as Valtrex are quite large. I've also heard (never tried it) that if you coat the pill with a little canola oil that that works. This is a huge hurdle for all kids. We practiced with the pill cup using white TicTacs and then introduced the real pills when they could reliably swallow those. Good luck, Robyn > > From: Kristy Nardini <knardini@...> > Subject: RE: How to get your kids to take pills > > Date: Friday, October 3, 2008, 8:58 PM > > > > > > > Have you tasted them? Guest guest
Ummm, I was ready, but I don't know that he was. I first showed him how I swallow pills, then gave him the chance. It didn't go down, so I told him I would help him. I cradled him like he was a baby (head slightly forward), then put a tiny pill in the middle of his tongue, then squirt in a bit of juice with a syringe. It took 2-3 tries but he got it. I made a HUGE deal when he got it and probably gave him a handful of chocolate chips or something. Guest guest
With my boys, I had to crush, mix, and draw up into a med dispenser and squirt to the back of the mouth, let them wash it down, and give a cherished goody immediately after. When my oldest was just about to turn 4 and his brother was two, as I stood there taking my meds, I told them when they learn to put the pills straight into their tummy by swallowing, they won't have to taste that yucky medicine anymore. So they picked up their pills that I had just washed & was about to crush, and they both swallowed their pills and have been ever since. One of the best days of my life. (I would wrap the washed pills in margarine at one point when it was needed). In the meantime, the colder, the better. Someone once suggested a spoon of ice cream right before, squirt the med, then another spoon of ice cream (we used RiceDream but eventually stopped that). The very cold things (maybe a banana pop chopped into pieces, etc) help dull the taste. Of course, my oldest - this sounds mean - had to be pinned the first few times, and the med shot thru his tightly pressed lips with the med dispenser (it had a tiny tip that could fit in thru the side of the mouth no problem without hurting him) enough times that he learned he couldn't fight, and he submitted. He was always rewarded. It took a few days but he became a champ eventually. If your child can understand pills floating on a drink down to the tummy, he or she may be able to swallow pills. My youngest was only two - he saw his brother do it and how I screamed and laughed and jumped up and down, and he just wanted in on it too.
