Guest guest
Dr. G would only tell you to remove foods that he has a physical reaction to. He'll have you give him his diet so he can look over it and monitor. He'll remove foods as you go, tweaking the diet based on labs other than the food panel. But go ahead and take the food panel with you as long as it wasn't done by an " autism " lab (he doesn't trust them). If it was done by GPL or Doctor's Data or such he'll probably have you retake the test with Meridian Valley. Guest guest
, Dr. G will help you tweak the diet when you see him... our son had sensitivities to 22 different things and he didn¹t make us take them all out. He knows from experience what really bothers our kids. For instance, he told us that eggs are often sort of a false positive and not to worry about taking them out unless our child had problems with eczema. The most important thing to take out will be cow¹s milk. He WILL make you take it out (if you haven¹t already), so you might as well start that right now! Whole grains will be another thing that has to go. Here¹s a link to an old article of Dr. G¹s that discusses his diet preferences. They have actually evolved some since then, but they are also tailored to each child so there¹s not a perfect/specific list we can give you. http://www.neuroimmunedr.com/Articles/Autism___PDD/Diet_/diet_.html He also doesn¹t like the rice milks made with brown rice, and is concerned about nuts, honey, cinnamon, tapioca, tropical fruits and berries, but some things vary from child to child. If you haven¹t read ³Understanding and Managing Your Child's Food Allergies² (A s Hopkins Press Health Book) by H. Sicherer, you really should... you will love it. The only complaint I have is that the author doesn¹t yet ³get² the relation between ³autism² and food allergies, but the book is well worth a read. Dr. Sicherer is sort of the Sherlock Holmes of food allergies, and the way he explains them helped me understand what goes on in the body much better. I recommended it to a friend who is a dietician and she loved it... said she couldn¹t put it down. Here¹s a link to it on Amazon... http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Managing-Childs-Allergies-Hopkins/dp/080 1884926/ref=ed_oe_p If you buy it, make sure you get the paperback... the hardcover is MUCH more expensive. You library might even have it (mine did). I really want to buy my own copy sometime and read it again with a highlighter. If you go to the archives on the site, there was a big discussion back from about August 11 to the 26th (2008) that talked about the diet. When you go to your initial appointment, TAKE A TAPE RECORDER if at all possible. Dr. G has been very open to people taping appointments. We even tape our phone consults so we can refer back to them later if we miss something (we always ask his permission before we turn on the tape recorder). It helps immensely. Your head will be swimming with information when you leave the appointment and it¹s extremely difficult to take it all in when you¹re there... you¹re trying to watch your child, answer questions, listen, and think of questions to ask all at the same time. It¹s intense! It¹s also generally pretty long (a couple of hours) so take extra tape and batteries. Hope that helps, Caroline G. In the mean time we saw a DAN doctor today and she told us that Ruby has 26 food sensitivities and that all these foods should be removed. In addition to these sensitivies she has many life threatening allergies and they didn't show up on the test. My question is did you take out all the food sensitivities or just the highest ones? Her diet is really limited and with these changes it's just meat and veggies. I really feel that her body is very reactive to food and maybe some things are showing up that don't need to be taken out. Thanks for the help,
Guest guest
, I forget if it's been mentioned to you, but as our kids heal, they have fewer problems with food intolerances and allergies.
