Guest guest
Sounds like die off to me. We just switched our son to Famvir and are going through a die off reaction we never experienced with Valtrex. Low grade fever, stuffy nose, irritability, sleepiness, etc.--I thought he was getting the flu, but Dr. G says it's die off. Although it's hard for them to go through it, it's actually a good sign that the med is working. Guest guest
Robyn, my son is also experiencing this with famvir, do you notice facial grimacing, or more sensory seeking behaviors? This all went away with the Valtrex, but it is now back. Guest guest
Not facial grimacing and he's not especially sensory seeking. This biggest thing we've noticed is fatigue and irritability. Dr. G said it can last a couple of weeks. We had an initial downturn in titers with Valtrex on both boys, but then the numbers shot up, thus the switch to Famvir. How long has your son been on it? Guest guest
The die off experience seems as individual as the child. It can start early (as is our experience with Famvir, where Valtrex die off was a least 10 days into treatment and much more mild) and last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. Noah has literally slept the week away at school. I brought him home one day and today they called me again saying he was too sleepy to work. I was at a doctor's appointment and couldn't pick him up right then, which worked out because he perked up after lunch. I just hope it's over soon. The irritability is less intense today, which is good. Guest guest
Our kids are so the same and yet so different. We have been through three anti viral and each time we experience the same issues I see being posted but after three time I would like to add some observations. 1) When you introduce a new anti viral not only do you see die off but all aspects of his health go the hell. The first three weeks his immune system goes out of whack and all of the issue come back. Connor skin picks and his healing of various wounds slows. Small scratches become sores and his chronic fugal infections in his feet explode, behavior goes to shit and he gets very tired. This is the same reaction if I introduce a food that he reacts to, they basically trash the system. New drugs, reactive foods or even being exposed to a cold or flue. The difference is after a few weeks on the new meds he not only recovers fairly quickly but reaches a new plateau. 2) The second issue I have found is not only Connors behaviors get difficult but his body does not regulate sugar well. Simple healthy foods turn into triggers. Carbs and fruit juices make him hype out and then crash that is why your son crashes before lunch and recovers after wards. I found that if I remove fruit juice and any sources of sugar as well as all carbs in the mornings prior to and during die off you loss the peaks and valleys during the day. The SSIRs contribute to the cyclic behavior but do not stop them they help in the lng run. The trick is to go to no fruit, no juice, minimal carbs and high protein. Connor will eat roast beef (cold sliced, turkey, egg, meatballs, ETC...) I focus on these foods for breakfast and lunch and the die off issues are not only shortened but much lest pronounced. 3) We give him Tylanol two to three times a day for the weeks after introducing a new anti viral - It helps a lot! 4) These kids truly do understand when you talk with them. Let them know they are sick and you will help them get comfortable if they will let you. Connor is ten and has a long way to go but he has learned that I am on his side and lets me comfort him if I offer before he melts down. Just a kid. Like to be held if he has the opportunity. If it escalates you loss the moment and it gets much harder to deal with. Guest guest
Thanks. That's great advice regarding the food. We seem to be past the worst of it. For the first time this week, he bounced out of bed, and got dressed without a fight. He even went to the car on this own when it was time to leave for school. He was also brighter and more focused this morning. Now, though, I have another one going through die off. Low grade fever, headache, body aches, stuffy nose, etc. Fun, fun, fun! But I do agree, they come out brighter and better.
