khaya, hey, did you notice i spelled your name correctly.  sorry, i've been mispelling it all this time.i'm sorry, but i really laughed at this.  only because she was laughing.  when my ex-father in law was in his last days and was doing 'funny' stuff, my ex-sister in law would laugh at some of the things he did.  at first i thought it disrespectful but she explained that if she didn't laugh at some of the things it would be so depressing.  i found this true when my father started 'down hill'.  sometimes what they go through is so hard to deal with,  sadness could be overwhelming.  so our family found also, that we had to see humor in some of the things that he did. so i hope you (and patty) will find no fault in me for this.

thanks for the info.  i will keep that tactic in mind.barbara

Hi again Barbara,

Yesterday my husband and I had lunch with 2 of our yoga friends. Patty mentioned that she had taken away her father's keys after he had been gone 3 hours on a 10-minute errand and finally a stranger called his wife (her mother) and asked her how to route him where he needed to go.

I asked Patty if it was difficult to convince her father to give away his car keys. She laughed and said no--she took them when he wasn't looking and he thinks he lost them. In fact, he's still looking for them! Apparently he has agreed to give the car to another family member, though, and they're planning to move the car soon, so it's not a constant reminder for him.

My sister and I would never have considered " playing a trick " on Mom like that--but it sounds painless! So it's something you might consider ...
