Hi Marie,

The correct type of boxes will have a pliable top, like a rubbery plastic... I

use a retractable utility knife to cut mine. Gotta be very careful as it takes

some strength and the knife can easily slip, my thumb got it a few weeks ago..

You can't use the totes with the hard lids, too tough to work with.. Plus, you

have to drill 60 - 70 holes in the part of the top you cut out!!

This is the kind of knife:

This is the kind of tote boxes I use... This link is for 6 boxes, at WalMart I

buy one at a time.. (same individual price) The 18 gallon boxes are smaller and

nice to work with too.. If you go to WalMart, you will see these there.

Thing is, these don't cost all that much, just a little bit of elbow grease!

MAKE SURE you use potting MIX and NOT potting SOIL. The soil will not work in

these boxes as it will not properly draw the water up from the bottom... I used

JUNGLE POTTING MIX and it worked great... Bought it at WalMart, Lowes carries it

also.

These are the same totes we are using to pack in....then I will use them to

garden with! We had a ton of them from when I had my gift store. They have

come in handy but they are still tough little buggers to cut! I'm not sure I

can do it with a utility knife...maybe having to bring out heavier arsenal, LOL
