Guest guest
Tue, Mar 18 2003 5:27 AM AEDT Tropical fruit producers cleared to irradiate produce Australian health authorities have denied there will be any risk to the consumer from the use of radiation to treat tropical fruits for pests. Under changes to Australia's food code, mangoes, lychees and custard apples can all be treated with radiation. Lydia Bookman from Food Standards Australia New Zealand says any irradiated fruit on sale in Australia would be clearly marked with warning tags. "Tropical fruits are allowed to be irradiated to kill any pests on them, any insect pests on them, before being exported, so it is quite unlikely that we'll ever see these within Australia," he said. "If for some reason they were allowed, and I doubt it, they would have to be labelled so consumers would be able to make an informed choice."
