khaya, to be very truthful, the dream house has turned into a nightmare.  the nightmare of where the lyme took over.  family is my dream.  all my g.kids and kids are inland, so that is where i want to be.  we though living out here at the ocean everyone would come.  we built it, but they didn't come.  so i guess we'll go to them, and it will be safer.  or at least until mt rainier blows, or an earthquake gets us.  oh well, at least we don't get tornadoes there.  i had heard of a lady who moved form s. ca. because she was afraid of the earthquakes.  then she died of a heart attack in spokane,  sooooo. might as well be happy until it's time to go.

all that fog you saw in the pics was the rain forest.  it is absolutely fabulous there.  you can be in warm, dry weather, and then go into the rain forest  and it is raining.  the moss hangs in long strands from branches.  you can walk on thick soft beds of it.  downed trees have trees growing from them sideways.  it is one of the most amazing places to see.  the forest dept. has parks for people to walk through different area.  if anyone ever comes this way it is worth the side trip.

there is the olympia peninsula with the ocean on the w and puget sound on the e.  if you go to the bottom of the peninsula, the s end of the sound, there is olympia.  the capital building sits on a hill that overlooks the water there.  quite beautiful.

the main road that comes out to where we live, if you head n. it ends at the indian reservation. we can go and get fresh salmon that they catch in the river right outside the packing house.  we pick them out of the bins, just hours old.  i will miss that part, but told my husband i expect him to start fishing with my son who now knows all the rivers to fish.  i have always loved salmon.  you can get clams, oysters etc., but i only like the salmon.

highway 101, inland about 20 min., will take you n. up and around the tip of the peninsula.  you will go past forks, where they filmed the twilight movies.  it is a real tourist place now, and it is the city on the most n.w spot on the peninsula. i lived there when i was very little.  a little side note here.

to get to seattle, we have to go w to olympia then a sharp turn n. another 50+ min.  olympia is maybe 100 mi. w of here, but takes about 1 1/2-2 hrs.  beautiful drive.  lots of trees like n. mi.

i grew up camping at the ocean, in fact, one of our lots my parents bought in the 60's.  but camping was in summer and always fun to hit the beach.  but living here in the winter season is harsh weather.  winds that rattle the house, and blowing rain that can make it somehow through the frames of new windows.  the storms are magnificent though. but i'm looking forward to a little calmer weather.  but then, summers are excellent here.  and you most always go to sleep hearing the roar of the waves.  and people always say they sleep very well here, yet no one knows why, you just do.

Barbara, When I was a teenager, my uncle from California sent me an Ansel book on the Olympic Peninsula for my birthday. I remember foggy photos of trees that went up past the borders of the photos. (I'm sure I still have the book somewhere.) So is Olympia near there? And 2 hours from the ocean does sound a lot safer. I was wondering about the effects of the tsunami, actually.

i keep thinking that you will be leaving your dream house. But the dream did not work out exactly as you planned. And you will not be that far away. Where you are going sounds very nice--and I think it is a very practical and well-thought-out decision.
