Guest guest
thank you jodie,i would get into those episodes and then feel so badly and stupid afterwards. and i thought it was the benzos. well, i understand that does it also, so i guess i get a double whammy. i guess i won't feel so embarrassed after all. i have asked my husband to help me recognize the episodes which will help. i can remember going round and round on a subject with him one day and i knew he was wrong. then late, while talking to my son on the phone, he said, " mom, you keep asking me the same thing " i was not able to comprehend this. couldn't figure out what 'their' problem was. now i look back and think 'were all those other times me too?' that's a scary thought. thx barbara Barbara, the ocd is one of the nasty side effects of the Bart. infection but I have strep. too and that doesn't help! I don't have it all the time (ocd-tendencies) but when I do...whew! Like you, sometimes I don't realize it until someone says or mentions something. I get very focused on something and can't get off of it! It's very frustrating...then if some one doesn't jump or get on my bandwagon...I get very irritated and agitated. Both dave and my mom can spot it instantly when it is " up " and I tend to drive them nuts, LOL! Sometimes mom will say: " maybe you should call me in a little bit when you are feeling better " . But thank-god I'm not like that all of the time. Sometimes though I can even tell when it is up....and am able to try and fight it! The more I learn about BART. and longer I go through this fight....I learn how nasty bart. really is! The herxing and symptoms are just horrible. You are not alone....Jodie L. > > > > > > marie, > > > > > > benzo is short for benzodiazepine. some of the drugs that belong to that > > > group are xanax, valium, clonazepam, the date rape drug, and several > > other. > > > they were originally for seizures but found that people became sleepy > > with > > > them, so drs starting using them off label (not what they passed fda for) > > > for sleep and anxiety. but these drugs were only tested and approved for > > > use for short periods of time, such as 2 wks or so. but drs ignore this, > > > especially psychiatrists who would rather prescribe a pill then listen > > to a > > > person and help them deal with their issues. they are being misused all > > > over the world this way. > > > > > > here are a couple of quotes from wikapedia: > > > > > > Benzodiazepines enhance the effect of the > > > neurotransmitter<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurotransmitter> > > > gamma-aminobutyric > > > acid<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma-Aminobutyric_acid> (GABA), > > > which results in sedative <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedative>, > > > hypnotic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnotic> > > > (sleep-inducing <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_induction>), > > > anxiolytic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anxiolytic> > > > (anti-anxiety), anticonvulsant < > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anticonvulsant> > > > , muscle relaxant <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_relaxant> and > > > amnesic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anterograde_amnesia> > > > action.[2] < > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzodiazepine#cite_note-ip2002-1> > > > These > > > properties make benzodiazepines useful in treating > > > anxiety<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anxiety> > > > , insomnia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insomnia>, > > > agitation<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychomotor_agitation> > > > ,seizures <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seizure>, muscle > > > spasms<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spasm> > > > , alcohol withdrawal <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_withdrawal> > > and > > > as a premedication <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premedication> for > > medical > > > or dental procedures.[< > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzodiazepine#cite_note-pmid18175099-2> > > > > > > > > > Benzodiazepines possess sedative, hypnotic, > > > anxiolytic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anxiolytic>, > > > anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, and > > > amnesic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anterograde_amnesia> > > > actions,[2]< > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzodiazepine#cite_note-ip2002-1> > > > [3] < > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzodiazepine#cite_note-pmid18175099-2> > > > which > > > are useful in a variety of indications such as alcohol > > > dependence<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_dependence> > > > , seizures <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seizures>, > > > anxiety<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anxiety> > > > , panic <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic>, > > > agitation<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychomotor_agitation> and > > > insomnia. Guest guest
Barbara, Don't blame yourself! YOu may have been right...but it doesn't mean the ocd wasn't their! If I can't get dave or mom or who ever to see my point...I just won't quit! I have gone rounds with them over my illness trying to explain things and I still don't think either one get the complexity or the seriousness of it! When the bart/ocd is flaring I will just go on and on....and I get very dramatic when they just don't " get it " or respond to it! They would just rather tune me out! You posted a very good message to julie just a while ago! We have to live with the illness, be our own doctors and deal with the nasty symptoms. I think they would just rather escape and not have too deal with it at all. I guess it is only natural but like you said it is a godsend to know that you are not alone! PLEASE don't take this the wrong way but your symptoms seem so identical in so many ways to my own....it has given me a peace of mind! I now realize it is the disease and not me....Last year when this all started everyone thought I went off the " deep-end " and it was some sort of MENTAL thing. To be so MISUNDERSTOOD with no " lab " as a concrete diagnosis, and suffering so badly, I just didn't want to live or go on anymore. That is pretty dramatic for someone who has fought so hard for their son's life and his health! But, to be so devalued by the medical world, and your own family, while suffering in a fast paced downward spiral was very scary! I had almost finished my college degree when this hit it's worst and I have had to change my life dramatically. I can see how this disease really does a number on people's moral and family situations. If it wasn't for this group grounding me and keeping focused on the " good " side of things......I probably would have given up a long time ago. Take care, Jodie L. > > > > > > > > > > marie, > > > > > > > > > > benzo is short for benzodiazepine. some of the drugs that belong to > > that > > > > > group are xanax, valium, clonazepam, the date rape drug, and several > > > > other. > > > > > they were originally for seizures but found that people became sleepy > > > > with > > > > > them, so drs starting using them off label (not what they passed fda > > for) > > > > > for sleep and anxiety. but these drugs were only tested and approved > > for > > > > > use for short periods of time, such as 2 wks or so. but drs ignore > > this, > > > > > especially psychiatrists who would rather prescribe a pill then > > listen > > > > to a > > > > > person and help them deal with their issues. they are being misused > > all > > > > > over the world this way. > > > > > > > > > > here are a couple of quotes from wikapedia: > > > > > > > > > > Benzodiazepines enhance the effect of the > > > > > neurotransmitter<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurotransmitter> > > > > > gamma-aminobutyric > > > > > acid<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma-Aminobutyric_acid> (GABA), > > > > > which results in sedative <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedative>, > > > > > hypnotic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnotic> > > > > > (sleep-inducing <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_induction>), > > > > > anxiolytic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anxiolytic> > > > > > (anti-anxiety), anticonvulsant < > > > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anticonvulsant> > > > > > , muscle relaxant <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_relaxant> and > > > > > amnesic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anterograde_amnesia> > > > > > action.[2] < > > > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzodiazepine#cite_note-ip2002-1> > > > > > These > > > > > properties make benzodiazepines useful in treating > > > > > anxiety<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anxiety> > > > > > , insomnia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insomnia>, > > > > > agitation<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychomotor_agitation> > > > > > ,seizures <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seizure>, muscle > > > > > spasms<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spasm> > > > > > , alcohol withdrawal < > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_withdrawal> > > > > and > > > > > as a premedication <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premedication> for > > > > medical > > > > > or dental procedures.[< > > > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzodiazepine#cite_note-pmid18175099-2> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Benzodiazepines possess sedative, hypnotic, > > > > > anxiolytic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anxiolytic>, > > > > > anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, and > > > > > amnesic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anterograde_amnesia> > > > > > actions,[2]< > > > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzodiazepine#cite_note-ip2002-1> > > > > > [3] < > > > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzodiazepine#cite_note-pmid18175099-2> > > > > > which > > > > > are useful in a variety of indications such as alcohol > > > > > dependence<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_dependence> > > > > > , seizures <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seizures>, > > > > > anxiety<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anxiety> > > > > > , panic <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic>, > > > > > agitation<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychomotor_agitation> and > > > > > insomnia. Guest guest
Barbara, you have nothing to apologize for! Mentioning that was a heavy email was not a criticism, but you ended the email on such a much lighter tone that it made me laugh. I think, especially after all you have been through, it is natural to feel very negative. We all do it. Actually, I think it's part of LD that very few escape. I personally have always tended to depression, and have to work very hard not to be depressing, but you can't always avoid it. And of course, meds often make it even worse. But Pollyanna is not very realistic--rather naive, actually. Our rose-colored glasses are gone, and I don't think they can be replaced. But I do think we can enjoy our good days and know that it is possible to feel well and happy. Guest guest
jodie, well i'm glad my problems give you peace of mind. at least they are of some value. just kidding, really. i feel the same way when i hear of others having the same problem. it was really true when i was in the worst part of my withdrawal from benzos. my sister and husband kept telling me 'it is the drug, not you.' they comforted each other a lot because i was a handful. i was on a benzo support site and others identified with what i was going through which really helped me. i was really 'nuts.' i can say that now, it wasn't funny then. i was suicidal. and that is not me. i understand that wanting to quit. every so often, when i'm tired, or now when i can't figure out some things i have to do with my coil, i tell myself,' i can't do this anymore.' you are fortunate that you have your son who needs you to keep you going. that is a god send. this last yr. i would have preferred to go home to heaven. but then i would consider others who really do love me, and my husband who depends on me, and i chose to want to stay for them. but for me, heaven would have been a promotion. i think if others were honest, each of us has entertained 'not caring to stay around-it's too tough'. mostly it passes. and as you said, we are here to keep each other going. yrs ago, i can remember feeling the 'unbelief' from family. they didn't get the fact that tests don't work with this one. i think there is still some ?s with some. they just can't understand why i can't do this or that. no test results to 'prove' i am sick. yrs ago the med. community thought fibro was in the head. yes, in the head, in the body, arms, legs, feet. that is the problem with all these chronic illnesses, they are so often subjective. 'and you look so good, how can you be sick'. yet they have come around to recognize fibro (which often is lyme) without tests, so maybe one day they will lyme. until then, we must rely on each other for support. do our own research, and treat accordingly. we probably need to lower our expectations of other people to understand our condition. by doing so, we won't be hurt or disappointed as much. as hard as it is, we kind of need to by pass then for support and understanding, because until you experience illness, you cannot understand. and by taking the pressure off of them to support us, it actually frees them to 'freely' give support. i know my sister has more compassion for others because she's had to deal with me and because her adult daughter has cf. her daughter just had a baby, who has been fussy from birth, which makes her have 'melt downs'. so my sister sees first hand what chronic illness does. she is also gone through some hard things that softened her. trials come to everyone and we can choose what to do with them. i'm certainly glad she chose for compassion instead of hardening herself. i'm so sorry you have to go through this rejection. it is so very hard. and it is harder when it comes from those who should be supporting us, and believing us. unfortunately, if they have bought into standard medical beliefs, it makes it so much harder for them to see where we are. try taking the pressure off of them for support. take it here more. so very hard to do, but i have been trying that with my husband, and i think it is helping. barbara Barbara, Don't blame yourself! YOu may have been right...but it doesn't mean the ocd wasn't their! If I can't get dave or mom or who ever to see my point...I just won't quit!
