I use limited goat's milk. I found a great powdered kind I use for baking,

and use it with pureed pears in recipes to offset the taste.

Subject: Milk subs???

Hey everyone,

Can I ask what you all use for a milk sub? We've been using rice

milk that is partially milled but Dr. G doesn't want us to use it

anymore. We also stay away from soy because of a bad reaction to it

last year. Any ideas???

Thanks so much,

Thanks for writing Kristy. What do you do for cereal? Dr G would

like us to use goat milk but the smell really kills me.

Have you tried Vance's Dari-Free? It's made from potatoes.

It can be hard to get at stores, but can usually be order from their website.

It's dry and you mix it w/water.

DariFree is what Dr. G lets us use for one of ours.

http://www.vancesfoods.com/darifree.htm

It comes as a powder that you mix with water... it¹s not incredible tasting,

but it¹s not too bad (sort of like skim milk)... you can also use it in

cooking to substitute for creamer if you mix it double strength, which is

great (so we can still make pumpkin pie)!

The drawback is that it doesn¹t contain any protein...

If you start using it regularly, you¹ll do yourself a favor by getting

yourself the pitcher so you can give it a pump to stir it before you pour it

each time... it settles and separates easily.

I tried mixing it up in the blender once and got a totally different

result... very strange texture... almost congealed.

Here¹s the link to the pitcher... it¹s similar to a Pampered Chef juice

pitcher...

Anyway, DariFree has been a lifesaver for us.

You can probably find it at Allergygrocer.com, too... look around on the

internet for a decent price.

By the way, we ordered the big box of powder at first but it was kind of a

mess to deal with so now we order it by the case (6 cans to a case... each

can makes 6 quarts).

My son won't eat cereal with milk, so I don't have to worry about it.

Hi ,

Is Dr. G ok with this? I can get the Vance's, I just don't want to

use something he won't be happy with.

Thanks for the idea,

I'm pretty sure Vance's is friendly. A lot of people talked about it/used

it on the list several years back. But I never asked Dr G personally. I

haven't heard of any potato allergies on here. ;)

My son never accepted any milk substitutions after I took away cow's milk 7

years ago. But I've used Vance's Dari-free and Soy milk while on the diet

for pregnancy/breastfeeding without issues.

But, if you have a hyper-allergenic kid, it is best to ask first.

-Can I ask why Dr. G wants you to stay away from rice milk. I am

generally new to but have been dairy free for years.

I just did a diet log for Dr. G. He's fine with the Vance's DairiFree.

I just wish my son liked it as much as he liked Rice Dream. Right now

I can put the Vance's on cereal, but that's pretty much the only way

he'll tolerate it. I've had to find other ways to get calcium into him.

I told Dr. G.if this topic came up again, I would tell the group my philosophy

about the milk issue, and what worked for us. When?he told us she was allergic

to milk from her food allergy test........The whole family gave up dairy period.

I could not agree with telling her she was allergic to dairy, then giving her

substitutions. How would she know when she was away from us what she was

getting??? It worked like a charm. For example when someone offers her ice

cream, she says " No thank you, I'm allergic. " It did not bother her because we all

gave it up. It also gave her confidence being in control of her diet, she even

knows not to eat chocolate chip cookies or chocolate candy because of the milk

base. She even gave up gold fish crackers, which she loved. ?We are so proud of

her.

Dr. G doesn't allow almond milk because it is from nuts. :(
