Guest guest
For the past Several years I've been debating with my dentist as to why I don't want x-rays taken... First visit theyalways want to take a " panoramic " x-ray and I won't allow them to.. I only allow x-rays of any tooth that may have an issue, which is none.. They always say their x-rays use so little radiation... But the way I look at it, over a lifetime, a little becomes a lot!! Plus, every doctor seems to want to take an X-ray of something... I've been lit up enough over my lifetime, long before I got wise about a lot of health topics!! NO MORE! Unless it is absolutely necessary... Now this new study from Yale says my thinking was right... Dental x-rays may cause non-cancerous brain tumors.. Guest guest
jim'last time i went into the dentist to have a crown margin checked i went through that. we have no insurance now so couldn't do a cleaning this time with an exam, but wanted him to examine all my teeth. at first the receptionist said he wouldn't ck my teeth without a cleaning. i keep them very clean, so she consented. then the assistant said i needed bite wings and 5 p.a. (3 upper front and 2 lower front to see roots). i said no thanks, just bite wings and the one p.a. on the tooth of issue. i wanted him to check all my teeth while i was there. i was paying for the exam, whether he checked one tooth or all of them. so, lets check all of them!she said 'he wouldn't do an full exam without all the x rays'. i said, 'sure he can'. she disagreed. i said, 'i worked in dentistry and knew he really could do that because we used to do it.' i was looking straight ahead, upset because i knew it was all about $ and he didn't get the income from the cleaning. she said quietly, 'look at me'. i turned towards her and she said quietly, 'sometimes they can be a little anal.' i laughed. he comes in and looks at the limited x rays, checked out the tooth in question. then stops. i said, 'could you check all of them?' he responded " i did check it.' i said, 'could you please check all the teeth because we have no insurance and i can't afford a cleaning right now with another exam.' well he checked them all, but it was the fasted exam i'd ever had. although the x rays are a great tool to see in between teeth where they can't see, many of the front ones are totally unnecessary, especially if the teeth are well to widely spaced. it's all about the money. i know. i worked for several dentists when i was young. so, don't always just follow what the dr says. you did right to refuse. after they x rayed everything on my husband one time, because he can be quite compliant because he doesn't know, i now always have to instruct him to 'just say no' when they want to do all the extras. if you don't stand firm, they will try to intimidate you to get as many as they can. and as you said, all the x rays are not good for us. actually-really-i'm not against dentists. barbara For the past Several years I've been debating with my dentist as to why I don't want x-rays taken...
