Guest guest
Well *%* & !!! Tana, I just pulled the bag of Epsom Salts we use and they are the PQ Corp brand you mentioned below. Thank you for this info.....would you please post to the list if you get any info on " more " purified brand(s)? Thanks, Elsie (in TX) [ ] Epsom Salts Warning I just found out Epsom Salts contain varying degrees of heavy metals. I looked up the 2 products that I know either the name of or the company of, at http://www.wa.gov/agr/pmd/fertilizers/index.htm#database One brand that I got at Wal-Mart contains 3ppm arsenic, 0.3ppm mercury and 3ppm lead (as well as 15ppm selenium if that is a worry), this product is put out by the PQ Corporation. Another, by the brand name Epsogro, has mostly undetectable levels with the exception of lead which is 14ppm. I don't think I want my kids bathing in either of these. Does anybody have a different brand that does not contain lead, mercury or arsenic? Tana
Guest guest
I checked the Epsom salts we currently have, put out by the Winn-Dixie stores, called Medic Epsom Salt, which says it's " 100% Mineral. " Still, I looked for an ingredient statement, and there is none, except in large print on the package it gives the formula for magnesium sulfate -- MgSO4 - 7H2O. So I guess it's okay. I have already used up the cute kind I got from Wal-Mart with the resealable bag and was sad to have to get the " cheap looking " kind in the milk carton, but now I'm glad. Guest guest
It says: Distributed by: Winn Dixie Stores, Inc. ville, FL 32203. I don't know where you are, but I'm in the Southeast (AL) and Winn Dixie is a prominent store here. I believe that Medic is their store brand name for personal care products. It does not name a manufacturer, just that WD is the distributor. To me, it was just the cheap store brand. Maybe other grocery stores would have a store brand that would be pure. Don't they absolutely have to name anything else that is in there??? Bonnie
Guest guest
I see. So what do we do? Stop using them? Use the Kirkman's cream? Do we need to check that out, too? Bonnie
Guest guest
Hi-- When you bought your epsom salts, where in the store did you buy them? Are these brands that you bought on the footcare/bandages aisle or laxative aisle, or... Epsogro sounds like something in the plant section. It list 3 uses with the first being a laxative, then fertilizer, then as a soak. But as far as I know *all* Epsom salts are listed with 3 uses. I have not personally used the Epsogro, I just knew of it, so I checked it out while I was at the site. Tana
Guest guest
Perhaps you bought the agricultural grade epsom salts from the nursery/plant section of the store rather than the medicinal epsom salts found in the pharmacy area? Medicinal epsom salts usually are just magnesium sulfate. Gaylen

Don't they > absolutely > have to name anything else that is in there??? > > Bonnie I think that they only have to name what " they " put in, (and sometimes not even then) I got the impression that it was impurities in the salts themselves. I know mine doesn't say anything about having lead in it. Kind of like someone having dirt for sale, 5 different kinds , all look the same, but one is from the area of a lead mine, one is from an area of a cinnabar mine, one is from an organic dairy farm, one is from someone's old cesspool and the last is from close to the seashore. All will have varying degrees of stuff. I found this info out at a Washington state website, they require all fertilizer manufacturers that sell stuff in Wash. to test and report metal contamination in the fertilizers. Epsom salts are a fertilizer. Tana
Guest guest
Years ago I worked for a chemical importer who imported epsom salts into the country, and there were definitely different grades. You need to buy " Food Grade " . It has the least impurities. Hope that helps. I don't know, your choice. I am no longer going to be using the brands I can find around here. What brand do you use? Is the brand name or manufacturer listed in the database in Washington state? And just because it is not listed in the database does not mean it doesn't contain metals, it also doesn't mean it does, just that it is not sold in that state. On this aspect I am lucky, it does not have a marked effect on my daughter(s) except to put them to sleep right after a bath. I know it is a *major* thing for some kids. >Use the Kirkman's > cream? Do we > need to check that out, too? > Bonnie I don't know if the Kirkmans cream is any better, they usually check there stuff for metals, but do they test their mag sulfate cream? Maybe we should ask. These numbers worry me, my kid is enough toxic that I just don't want to soak her body in something that has lead and arsenic and mercury in it, but then just the 2 that I looked at had different measures of these metals. All I can say is this is terrible and that we need to check out our products (maybe call the company and ask if it has been analyzed for metals?). Everywhere you turn.... I have gotten some in the past, that lists its first purpose as a soaking aid. But, *all* that I have bought have always listed 3 purposes: laxative, soaking aid and plant food. I have not checked out all that I have used as I do not know all the companies that put it on the shelves, and I am sure that not all brands are sold in Washington. But, because of the fact that it is also a plant food (even if it has other uses) if it *is* sold in Washington, it needs to be analyzed for metal content and reported to the database. Not all states have this requirement (too bad). But I have not ever bought " Ag. grade " anything to put in my kids bath. I use nothing but manure and compost on my garden, and I don't buy it, it is produced right here. I don't think I would buy something from the nursery section for my kids that I don't by for my cabbage, tomatoes and peppers. I am a little upset about this myself, and plan for tomorrows trip into town to get names from the " other " stores Epsom salts to see what I can find out. But this stuff (PQ Corp at least) is sold in the first aid aisle of Wal-Mart, one of the most shopped at stores in this country. Guest guest
-I have been buying Epsom Salt from Wal Mart also, but the one I buy is manufactured by Diamond Products Company in Florida. I live in Louisiana. I didn't see it listed on the ag site you provided and it doesn't seem Louisiana or Florida has the same service.
