Guest guest
Hi , 1, What a creative idea for cleaning glasses! 2. Did I mention that our ophthalmologist saw Penina on Wednesday and felt there was no change (no detaching retina and the cataracts are not obscuring her vision yet)? Whee! He also had Penina look at a small vision test card, and on the basis of that he decided that Penina should have reading glasses @ a prescription of about +3. He feels that her close vision (just within a couple of inches) is better than her distance vision (and could be better than 20/100). Compared with the detailed assessments at the Montreal Association for the Blind (at least 1.5 hours in the low vision clinic with a specialist optometrist, the O/T and other people observing), this seemed pretty cursory, but I'll grasp at straws! So now we'll have two sets of glasses to keep track of! 3. Thanks for your encouragement about her determination and adaptability. I'll try to remember that at difficult times like yesterday when she morphed into a monster child right in the middle of a grocery super-store. And of course at that time in the store there were several people I knew, including a distant cousin. Granted Penina was hot and tired, but I was mortified when she started screaming " I want ice cream!!!!! " and flailing and kicking. Other than my face flushing, I managed to stay calm, and I handled the tantrum the way I had been coached by the wonderful psychologist years ago. I took her hand, marched her to the cash, informed her that the consequences for this unacceptable behaviour would be that we were not buying any ice cream, that we were paying for what we had bought so far, that I would not let her come to " help " me shop for a long time, and that if she didn't calm herself down there would be additional consequences. She screamed and raged through the checkout (fortunately there was a short line), she stomped to the car and refused to get in her booster seat. I took a deep breath and began to count to three. She was in the seat before I got to two and she could tell I meant business. But she did inform me how much she hated me, that I was ugly and horrible and she didn't want to go anywhere with me. By the time we got home she was calm, contrite and she helped me unload the groceries. I felt like I had been through a war, and she's not even a teenager yet! We had a chance to talk about it later. I told her that she is now a big girl and that there is zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour. I told her that I knew she knew better, and I asked why she acted like that. I got one of my first " I don't know " s. But she promised to try to control herself in future. Where does this rage come from? Is it a CHARGE thing or a hot and tired 5 year old thing? Fortunately these episodes are relatively rare. But they sure give us cause for concern! 4. How did your move go? We're thinking of you! Did you own or rent your old digs (ie. does it matter if you leave stuff behind?)? How is Graeme managing with a longer commute? Are you settled in yet (was the computer the first thing ou set up?)? Does Kennedy think this is all a hoot? Are you pooped? Take care, Anne, mom of Penina (CHARGE, 5) Graeme & Weir wrote: > Anne, > We use regular baby wipes, they work great! Guest guest
Anne, Great news about the vision appt! Feels good to hear something positive now & then eh? Regarding the tantrum, sounds like a typical kid thing to me, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Penina's level of understanding is so awesome, it was great you could discuss it later (we are not quite to that point yet). I think you handled it perfectly. Kennedy's been doing a lot of impulsive type behaviour lately, pulling things off shelves, hitting me, etc when we are out. When she is hitting me from her perch in the shopping cart, sometimes I think she is just annoyed that I am not giving her as much attention as usual, so when it gets bad I just stop and hug her and let her hug me and play with my hair & suck her thumb for a minute or so. This usually helps a lot. I don't care what people think about it, it's extra " lovin " time from her too, so I'll take it. With her other impulsive pulling things off and throwing it down, I just explain it OVER AND OVER AND OVER again that we don't do that, (we only throw balls...how may times have I said that lately????) The move...yes I am exhausted...we are all settled (Graeme's computer is not here yet but is coming this week, it doesn't matter too much to him, he's still entrenched in blueberry harvest). Kennedy is...adjusting. She asks for home some times and we have decided to say " we're home at Grammie's " because it upsets her to say " we ARE home " when the only home she's known for 3.5 years is in Pennfield. She's doing okay and actually had a decent night's sleep last night for the first night in a month! amen....She likes her new room (has her own TV & VCR now so her life is complete) but is still making some adjustments but all in all I am thrilled with how she's handling it. We owned our old place, and G's dad is buying it so we have time to leave some stuff there, etc until we find a new house. (by the way, the computer was the LAST Thing to get set up, believe it or not!) Anyway, I've written a novel now so I " ll close, lots of work to do...I couldn't resist a few emails though...
