Hi Marie,

You don't live in Michigan, do you! We have to worry about the danger of frost

until Mother's Day!

Good for you Marie!!

My veggies are coming along, but it's been cooler up here, so no crop yet...

My t'mater plants are getting big though and very healthy looking...

I think the temp is just now getting into the 80's and will finally remain

there..

We've had some 80' but a lot of 70's still and nights in the 40's and 50's,

so things are still growing pretty slow...

Oh, an my watermelon seeds have sprouted!! Organic watermelons, can't wait!

I've built four 30 gallon garden boxes and have two 18 gallon ones to build

yet..

I sure wish I built them before planting time as I could not get my garden boxes

built fast enough once planting season started here.

Take care,

Jim

Hi Kahya,

First tim some vegetable escape for all theses threats. before there was also the iguana eating the papayas th emangos and any flower I was contemplenting the gastronomic discovery of cooking them soon and we moved where there are no more fortunatly for them :)

we are just missing the forst .

Hi Marie,

South Florida certainly has different problems than Michigan! But my cousin in

Tallahassee has ideal gardening conditions. Now that it's truly spring in

Michigan, I'm contemplating gardening in earnest this summer. I seem to have a

little more energy than I had last summer, and that's where I want to use it.

khaya,i'm so envious of your spring.  even in my greenhouse i can't put out tomatoes and peppers before june.  just too cold for them to take up the nutrients. and then they often succumb to fungus from the moisture.

our autums are nice though, because the wind starts coming off the land from the east instead of off the ocean on the west.  last yr it stayed nice into early oct.  and this winter we have had more sun than normal.

i am doing something so i can maybe do a little gardening this yr.  when i put in my raised bed garden i only had access to aged horse manure, which i discovered has viable seeds of alfalfa, oats and other aggressive growing grasses.  so my garden soon turned to solid grass, as i couldn't keep a head of it.

so i am having all the cinder block beds (wood rots here) moved, the ground leveled and landscape fabric put down to eliminate the grass and seeds. then the rebuilt deeper beds will be filled with bagged compost (no seeds) mixed with sand for drainage and will then have a garden i can use.

anyway, hopefully this will give me a garden that will have almost no maintenance so i can enjoy some fruit from my work.  i already have 2 rows of blueberries (that need tlc) new strawberries coming, blackberries and huckleberries growing wild all over. these 4 do very well here, and that's about it.  some cool crops can grow here if i put some work into it, will see.  but would love the organic greens.

so enjoy the wonderful mich. weather for your garden.  it's a beautiful place. been there many times as my mom's family is from grand rapids.barbara

marie, you are so right.  but i have found that they just have no self control.  i could transplant them into a pot so the roots can't spread. have to make sure they never, ever go  to seed again though.

Thanks for the advice CR, Do you know anything about using chicken poop for

fertilizer? One of our neighbors gets it when he goes up north, and that is all

he uses on his lawn. We hardly ever fertilize our garden beds, other than mulch

and natural compost (unfortunately, our compost pile does not get hot enough to

kill all the weed seeds, and we cannot really keep up with the weeds and grass

in our beds).

Marie, I know juicing greens is supposed to be really good for you, but I am not

fond of green juice! I know a lot of people put some of their " weeds " in their

salads, but we just add herbs from our garden.

Barbara, I thought the weather in northwest Washington would be a lot like

Vancouver, BC, which I had heard had ideal gardening conditions. When you move

further south, will the gardening be any better?

Sorry--I skipped quite a few emails this morning, but I'll get to them

eventually--my new windows look wonderful! And they open and close quite easily.

i've come to realize this as i've made peace with the disappointment.  i shall wait upon the lord for his timing.  it's always so much safer that way, anyway.  tornadoes!!!  wow, i forgot that one.   don't start to feel  too comfortable there in mi.  when i was very little my grandmother, who lived in grand rapids, watched as one touched down and took her neighbors garage, and left her's right next to it.

so, to keep up the fear and paranoia, you might want to ck into that ins. lol.  actually, several yrs ago we had one touch down out here.  at first they though it just a very strong wind storm, as we get up to 100 mph here.  but it actually touched down and took out a garage and an rv.  so, now, i need tsunami, earthquake, tornado, and flood ins.  i don't think a volcano will affect us here.  they are further inland.  and we have the fire and theft part already.

take care,barbara

Hi Barb,We just paid our annual insurance fees today. A lot of money! We checked with another company that we heard was cheaper, but it wasn't. Oh well. We don't have earthquakes, floods, hurricanes or tsunami's around here. They keep warning us about tornadoes, though. I should check to see if we're covered for tornadoes.

I think now is not a good time for you to be moving, anyway. I really think it's too much of a challenge to go through. Next year will be a better time for you to deal with it. And you have all of this year to plan your strategy and build up your strength and stamina.

I bought a load of topsoil once, to fill in a low area of our lawn. It was full

of weed seeds--different weeds than were in the other parts of our lawn, so I

know they came from that topsoil. You never know where that topsoil is coming

from or how it has been handled before you get it! Of course, that's also true

of packaged soil, unless it is labeled seed-free. You just have to be willing

to deal with the weeds when you buy that stuff. I have heard from other people

that the " topsoil " delivered to them was full of clay.

good advice on adding mag to the soil.  blossom end rot, seen a lot on tomatoes, is cause by low mag--and they don't even have lyme dis.  if you have tomatoes that are showing this, for a quick fix while waiting for the mag to be taken up by the roots, you can spray them with e.salts and water.  best to always add mag when you plant and avoid the problem.

marie,

if you buy dirt in bulk be sure it isn't just decomposed saw dust. they often leave piles of it to decompose. it turns a lovely rich black color so you think it would be great soil, but it is not. it has too much of a chemical from the wood and won't allow plants to grow. great for using for bark where you don't want anything to grow.

trust me, i know. i did that years ago to fill my planters in the greenhouse. nothing grew well that yr. disaster.

to fill pots i now use a local organic compost in bags. i will add sand to keep it loose. works great. easy to handle--or my husband to handle.

barbara

khaya, marie,

there is another one for insurance. hurricanes. i missed that one. marie, do you have hurricane insurance?

my, the need to different types of insurance just keep climbing, doesn't it.

Gardening advicedo not buy cheep potting soil it may be only sand and sawdust. most states do not regulate what is in potting soildo not just throw fertilizer out on garden. Most of the nitrogen is in urea form. Urea will evaporate into air in a few hours. work in soil or water wellUse a fertilizer with all the trace elements. most soils are missing something.ADD MAGNISUM SULPHATE epsom salt most soils do not have enough magnisium and will not be able to use the calcium in the soil. you also will not get the magnisium from your vegitables if there are not enough in your soil. This adds both the magnisium and sulpheur that the plants needed.> >> >> >> > Hi Jim ,> >> >  > >> > I have suppernb concomber plants from the first vegetable bucket I made like the you tube you posted here  .
