GREAT, thanks! I hope it works for you this time around! This isn't

too much fun is it?

On a lighter note, I think we're just about done w/Drew's band. I

think it's 3-4 more weeks which would make it a total of 7-8 weeks..

! It's going by quickly and just in time for Halloween...

Well, you know, I do draw the line with wackos! LOLOL! Knowing that you were hopping on a plane to get out of the mess you were in with a prior ill fitting band, I figured you must be pretty good people to go the distance with that! Thank you SO much for your thoughtful post, it really keeps this all in perspective about the importance of helping members with whatever situation they have found themselves in.

I am so flattered that you trusted giving my phone # to your husband, I'm sure he was more worried about me being a wacko than anyone ;) Please continue to share your experience with the board, it is equally important that you share the bad with the good, so that other members will be afforded a round about education on this entire process. I wanted to end my stay here with a summary of all that I've read from literally hundreds of parents, and put myself back in time with how I felt reading and worrying about this process. I hope that if you do keep my post in your backpack (which really made me cry!), it will give you a pick me up on a bad day- because I was offered that same encouragement and it really made a difference. All my best to you, and the offer to help you whenever your in Miami is still standing- whenever you need help, please feel free to call on us. You are such a wonderful mom to make things happen for , and your posts have already helped so many members with your knowledge of this process. Good luck to you and will be a graduate before you know it!

I know how you feel about any regression, But when my son got his helmet off he was about nine months. The kids are so mobile at this point they are no longer laying on the heads throughout the day and they move so much during thier sleep there is no way you can be getting up throughout the night to repo her you'll drive yourself crazy. About your other concern I think that you are more aware of it because you know where to look sometimes I look over the top of my son's head to see if I can see anything still off but, nobody else would even know he ever had a problem, especially with your daughter all the doctors told me that a girl is easy to cover a flat spot up because they grow long hair and with a boy you never know if they will shave thier heads or buzz it real short.

I hope this helps.....

My daughter was DOC banded for 5.5 months (from 4.5-9.5 monthsof age). You could have classified her as a moderate case using the CTassessment graphs for plagiocephaly from the files section, whentreatment began. She had 2 bands - we flew through the first one in 8weeks. At that point our excellent CT orthotist said that she didn'tthink a second band was necessary but that ulimately it would ourdecision as parents to make. Our (also excellent) doctor said he sawit as a borderline case but that he would support us with a secondprescription if felt that we really wanted to do it. So we got thesecond one and got some more correction (we trudged through that onein 14 weeks). Through both bands got very good correction ofher face, ears, and forehead for which we are very thankful. However astubborn flatness behind her

right ear remained throughout treatement. It appears not to be very signifigant (my parents can't see it forexample and don't think there is any problem) but of course, as a nowplagio-aware mother, I can see that plus a tiny bit of forheadassymetry, and so can my husband if he tries. We didn't really consider a third band because the second one seemedto be pushing the extra distance already and a third certainly wasn'tadvised by doctor or orthotist. I didn't even raise the topic sincethe second one seemed to be pushing it. The only time I've reallyconsidered whether we should have done it is last week when I took to her 1 year appointment and saw that her head had grown alot since her nine month visit. I felt a stabbing pain of missedopportunity. In the end I think what it means is simply that shedoesn't have 100% correction, I still notice that, and I'm not "over"it. Perhaps I'm noticing more now that she

is bigger (or possiblybecause I can see her head all the time since its not covered by aband anymore).I was wondering if anyone who's in the post-banding stage couldcomment on whether further improvment continues to happen and/or thesethings become less noticeable (even to a parent). My three year old'shead is so much bigger than 's - do some small shape changeshappen from 1-3?And, a final question about 1 year olds. How important is it to keeprepositioning at night at this stage? Out of paranoia of anyregression I always correct her position at night to get her off theflat side if needed, just in case. The nice thing now (as opposed tothe newborn days) is that she usually stays asleep for a long time inthe new position. I just wondered if any one had any information on this. Thanks for "listening",-For more plagio info

I think I just posted an empty one. Sorry new to this. Dr. Blecher

is terrific and I actually did not know he had an office in London

as well. I did some reasearch last night and found it. I was

looking for ideas to decorate Willow's band. :o) We don't even

have it yet and I'm all wanting to decorate it already. There was a

Mom there that was thinking of ways and hats to hide the band. I

said that was sad, b/c they are SOOO CUTE. She looked at me like I

had lost my mind. lol Guess Germans think a bit different about

these things. She said that people would look at her child as if he

was " retarded " was her word choice. Made my stomach turn to be

honest. Thanks for the warm welcome and I will post more once

Willow has her band.

Hi Sandy,

I was just like you. I started shopping for paint and supplies a week or two before she got her band. Now I'm trying to decide how we will decorate band #2. We'll be getting it sometime around the 12/10. She's getting casted Tuesday (See I'm doing it again). I can't decide between a Christmas and New Year's theme or a flower and heart patchwork quilt. I'm going to try my hand at painting again. I think it helps people feel more comfortable asking questions when they look so cute in their decorated bands. Decorating it makes it so less medical. People are always saying hi to my daughter and using her name since it's right on her forehead LOL.

Happy hunting.

Hi ,

Thanks for the info on your plan. Interesting that your state board helped. Did

they

speak to your employer and then the employer overruled the insurance company or

how did it all work in your case? We actually live in Maine so in the end I may

contact

the Maine insurance bureau for help if all else fails (even though, as you say,

they

have no jurisdiction over this). Very interesting to hear your case.

Thanks,

Hi ,

Sorry I missed your post earlier. Thanks very much for sharing your story, I

truly

appreciate it. I would absolutely love to have a copy of that letter, might help

especially when it comes time to ask the employer to overrule the insurance

company. We will be away until the 29th, should I e-mail you with a fax number?

If

so, is it your e-mail where I would send it?

Thanks again,

I have a letter from the Arizona State Board of Insurance stating that Cigna should be paying the DOCband under DME, I know this is not the issue for you yet but if you need a copy of the letter let me know.

Hi Margo,

I actually felt Mathew had a slow start. I felt like I didn't see much progress in the first month, and I was getting discouraged then. I think it all depends on when they have their growth spurts. And at 2 months, I was still figuring we'd have to be in it for a lot longer. I was trying not to get my hopes up in case we did.

And actually, if we were going for perfection, we'd probably have to get another band. But since his assymetry went down to 3mm and that is within normal range, we decided not to. I tell you, yesterday, I thought his head looked great. However, I just looked at it now, and I thought, maybe I should keep the band on another 2 weeks. (They made one final adjustment in case we wanted to use it an additional 2 weeks). But then I felt it again, and it didn't seem bad. I guess once a member of the plagio police, always a member.

We'll be hoping for some good growth spurts for you in the next few weeks!

- Congratulations! I know you're loving that sweet little head aren't you?! I'd like to ask you a question. My son has had his band for almost 2 and a half months. I see that had his for a little over four. Did you begin to get discouraged around the two month mark? Did it seem as though his progress was slow at that point? My baby's head has seen a lot of progress since he's been wearing his band, but it seems to be slowing down. Our goal is for him to graduate by the time his first birthday gets here. That will be in April, & he will have worn it a little over 4 months then. Do you see any hope of that happening? When hit the two month mark did you imagine that he would have graduated two months later? Or did it seem as though he had a long time to go? Am I making any since? Hope you can offer me some words of encouragement. Thanks. MargoFor more plagio info

You described in detail our appointment today. He wasn't even

looking and pointed it out. He even pointed out that she is flat in

the back in general, but compared to the way it was this was good.

He also met a Neurosurgeon at a conference that he attended for

plagio that was absolutely against banding in every way there was

b/c there was just not enough research done on this topic and that

it was still very contraversial. Our Ped is actually pretty band

friendly. He had someone in close family that has a FLAAAAT back,

and he is grown up so he knows that not all kids round out. This

neurosurgeon got him thinking though. He is the type of doc though

that will tell you what options are out there and will make it

possible to get, BUT it is in the end the parent's decision which

way they want to go. Even if nothing happens for Willow as far as

rounding out more from here on we were lucky to have our Ped and to

have the rounding we did. I know this and I am thankful. Just

don't want people to think that I'm all misarable about her

head. :o) Thank you tons for replying.

Hi -

I just checked my email. Thank you for emailing me. We were very busy

today, long day. I will definitely call you. When would be the best

time to talk? I am having family over tomorrow, but I can still call.

I really have several questions.

I checked your photo album of your children. They are simply

adorable!!!! Our son's have a lot in common. Not only do they have the

same head type, but they have the same activity set! ;-) I wish you had

updated photos of 's progress in your album. There is a big

difference in his May 2003 to July 2003 photos. Great improvement in

the above photo shots. Since you have a docband, do you have those

results shot photos?

I am really sorry about how you were treated by Orthomerica. When they

said they couldn't have you go to Orlando for the scan, was it because

the scan was at the Manufacturing building or an Orthotist? You see, in

Winter Park there is now an Orthotist that has a scanner. We are not

going to Orthomerica for the scan. set up an appointment with the

closest Orthotist to us that has a scanner (which is in Winter

Park-close to Orlando).

I would like to talk about your experience with the Docband and the

travel to Miami. What a great mom you are!!!! That was an amazing

commitment. I admire you for that. I would do the same, if I knew what

band would give best results. But, it seems to be more on the fitting

and the Orthotist. Is your son still wearing a band? I want to know how

he did with his band, how long he needed to wear it, and if you are

happy with the results. Did he have any side effects from the Docband?

I am so sorry he had a horrible skin problem with the Starband. Is the

material they use for each helmet that different? or was it the fit?

Dr. Carey did say , in her eyes was mild to moderate. That is why

she thought, she wouldn't band him if it was her child. She said she

sees A LOT worse. I think just charmed her so much, he was in

super sweet mode the time he saw her. ;-) (all kidding aside). She left

it to us and want us to try putting him on his side to sleep to see if

there was any change. Well, he still has the same head after a month of

side sleeping. No change at all (such a bummer). I told her I have been

repositioning him since he was 3 months, except for the sleep ( he was

always on his back because of the SIDS scare). It is exhausting to make

sure he never gets back time. A friend once said to me, the first

couple months of your child's life you are there at every whim. The

rest of their life your trying to recondition them to not need you at

every whim. I feel that way about the back thing. Three months of back

reclining (swing, car seat, bouncy) and sleep; since then I am trying

everything to make sure he doesn't go on his back ( jumper, activity

set, tummy time, booster chair). GOOD GRIEF.

Well, I hope we will be able to talk on Sunday or Monday.

Thank you again for getting in touch with me. I am looking forward in

talking to you!

Hi there. I just read your post. I am very interested in this. My son started a DOC Band at 17 1/2 months. He's been in it for a month and I have noticed astonishing results. Is Dr. s in touch with CT? He sounds very knowledgeable. I will ask the CT folks about this when we go on the 16th. I would hate to have to pay for another Band, but what you said makes sense. Thanks.

Hi ,Those pictures of Hannah are adorable! It's like she has her ownlittle support group there!Thursday we had a really good appointment with cranial facial surgeon,Dr. s; he was terrific. Have you heard of him at any ofthe moderators' conferences? Anyway, he agreed a second DOC Band wouldbenefit Meredith. She just turned 15 months old and has been in herband for 15 weeks now. Dr. s also diagnosed slight torticollisand slight head tilt; until we saw him, we were told Mer just had alittle neck tightness, but not torticollis. We will continue with theneck exercises CT recommended and try some other things Dr. ssuggested. He also said he thinks older babies that can benefit from two bands,do better if they don't go the full 4 months in the first one beforemoving into the next one. He said perhaps wearing the band for 3months and then getting another band can be more effective thanwearing one for 4 months and then starting again with another. I thinkit has to do with keeping those holding points really holding andbecause bands lose some of that gentle pressure after awhile. Forolder babies whose head growth rate is slowing down as they approachthat 24 month mark, two rounds of shorter treatment may be better.Have you heard other specialists talk about this at any of theseminars or conferences you've attended? It makes sense to me, justwanted to know if you've heard that also. Thanks , from SCFor more plagio info

Sorry to but in here, but I couldn't help notice your comment about ear displacement. I thought and have been told that a band would not help the misalignment of my daughter's ears. They are still off at 8 mos and we are repositioning for the plagio. Angelina has tort as well - would you mind commenting on what you have been told about the ears??

We just had our consultation with Cranial Tech, who definitely recommended he be banded due to ear displacement, and we also have a neurologist appointment on Thursday. Do you know when the channel 12 segment will air? We are also awaiting a response from United Healthcare, but from reading the boards it doesn't look too good. We are keeping our fingers crossed though! Let us all know how it goes!> Just an update on Paige..she is responding wonderfully to the > helmet. Hi again!

The PT that looked at my son did tell me that the band would help

with the ear displacement. I honestly don't know if it will

completely fix it, and I had so many other questions at the time I

didn't ask. He doesn't have any up & down misalignment, one ear is

just pushed further forward than the other. She did tell me that

when everything gets moved the ears should move as a result. Anyone

else have some input?
