Guest guest
Our oldest child who had no speech and started talking was 14. We have one who is older who can now communicate by writing (all forms) but only has a few words. E. on RN,MSN NNY Autism Clinic Upto what age children can develop speech Hi, I have one basic query. Till what age we can keep hopes that our kids may develop speech. Will it be possible for them to get verbal even after 10 years. Though I asked this question several times in this group, I wanted to reconfirm whether we can keep hopes on their speech or chances are less? My son is undergoing therapy his comprehension is increasing, but speech part he is not getting motivation to initiate. Your experiences and ideas are highly appreciated. Guest guest
This is a great question. I wish I could answer it. My eight year old son has limited expressive language although his receptive language is near typical. He still is reluctant to use language. Guest guest
Does your son have echolalia? My son is 7 and could speak 2 to 3 word sentences when he was little. Then echolalia increased (lines from Barney movies). But after siezures got under control with an atlas orthogonal chiropractor and treatment from biomedical doctors, he is doing a lot more expressive language! And I know there is much more to come! Keep on keeping on! Continue to engage him with things he likes-for our son, that's elephants, music, horses, swings, gfcf cake, etc!!! Hope this helps! Guest guest
Great Question! There is an adult woman on my autism ohio group that has autism and did not develop speech until she was an adult. She was not diagnosed with autism until many years later. She spent many years in mental institutions as a child and an adult. She is now a grandmother of 4 and has one typical granddaughter with another grandchild on they way. She is still severely affected and has a difficult time meeting with people and gets very anxious when doing typical things such as shopping for groceries. I have seen her speak at my children' s school and she is absolutely brilliant and she always gives me hope for my children and others. All the best, Jill
Guest guest
My friend has a 9-year-old who has just started imitating sounds and one syllable words -- the foundations of speech! My own son is apraxic, so he will say a word or two but does not have conversational speech. Both of them have had weekly one-on-one speech therapy for quite a while. If your son is apraxic, it may not be that he isn't motivated but more that he may have difficulty with the motor planning part. Has he been assessed by a speech therapist? Guest guest
We are doing RDI and through that learned that 80% of individuals with autism will at some point learn to speak. Kristy Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry
Guest guest
We used pivotal response training with my son which was really helpful for the motivational part. It left off, though, at communication as he became really good at using 1-3 words to get his wants and needs met, but not shared language. Someone else posted in this thread about apraxia and motor planning. I've learned it's very important to combine speech with other therapies like OT to help with regulation and motor planning. Guest guest
Hi--my understanding is that there really is no age limit. There was an article in the local paper about an autistic woman, in her thirties, who had just learned to speak over the past couple of years. Prior to that point the clinicians had signed-off on her and said she couldn't learn. It turned out to be a matter of finding the right speech therapist who knew how to work with this disorder. FYI, my son is the same as Kristi's but sometimes can hold a brief conversation--that's the point where motivation needs to drive them rather than strictly ability to speak and auditory problems. Guest guest
Heck I would settle for one that had a clue. My daughter's therapist is terrible and she is the only option. I have heard though the grape vine that we may get the one I have been asking for for two years next school year. I can only hope. Sheri > > We used pivotal response training with my son which was really helpful > for the motivational part. Guest guest
Best of luck. Our first school speech therapist wrote a lovely report that said " when his behavioral problems are under control some progress in speech may be possible " (she was expert only in oral motor/lisp type problems, not auditory processing.). The next didn't know what PECs was, the next didn't think he needed visuals since he had some speech....We might as well have taken him to a foot doctor. Best to look for a private therapist who knows what needs to be done. Sheri wrote: > > Heck I would settle for one that had a clue. My daughter's therapist > is terrible and she is the only option. Guest guest
We have been supplementing SD provided ST and OT with private pay since January and finally seeing BIG gains.
