Guest guest
Hello Tonia, Everyone's experience is different, but Topamax is the only drug that my son was able to attain seizure control with, he has complex partial seizures. However, he started to have cognitive problems and word finding difficulty at school and on the advice of the doctor and with the input of the teacher , I made the decision to lower the dose and add another medicaton, a decision I've come to regret. He has been on more than 17 trials of medications and combinations of medications and none offered the success he had with Topamax. I want to revisit this drug as my son continues to have seizures and is on 3 AED's at this time. Dr's don't seem to believe in revisiting meds that were tried in the past. But I plan to pursue this option anyway as the cognitive problems are no worse than the weekly/daily seizures that present cognitive/memory problems of their own. My advice to you is to try to avoid changing meds that offer control but present with these types of problems, I really wish I knew then what I know now. Good Luck to you and your son. " Tonia B. Guest guest
Honestly that is the only thing I have heard good about Topamax is the fact of weight loss! I know someone that was on it for quite awhile for seizures and that med only screwed up her mood, attitude, the whole nine yards including memory! A lot of seizure meds can mess with the memory though.....I know! Honestly though I myself will not try Topamax. Are you on the depekote for the SMA or for seizures? Guest guest
I'm on depakote for the sma, but would come off to try topamx for a while. Since I am not sure at this time how much, if at all the depakote is helping, and the weight gain is bad I wanted to try to come off. The bad thing is I will only know if it was actually keeping me stable when I come off and perhaps lose some strength. I hope it doesn't happen! I really, really want to try topamax just to lose some weight and then go off. I'm hoping the effects won't be bad in such a short time. missy <ianpaul2@...> wrote: Honestly that is the only thing I have heard good about Topamax is the fact of weight loss! Guest guest
I had no idea that topamax was being used for weight loss! My little one, Krystan (7 1/2) takes topamax on a daily basis in addition to another medication to help control symptoms of early onset bipolar disorder. I have definitely seen a reduction in her appetite but it has not caused weight loss in her. She has not experienced the serious *dulling* that can occur with topamax use. Some in the world of psychiatric illness affectionately call it " dopamax " because of that dulling. I would probably check this out a little more closely. It concerns me that it would be prescribed to a person with a neuromuscular disorder which causes an increased likelihood of metabolic acidosis since that is one of the possible side effects. I would certainly want to weigh the many possible side effects against the potential benefits, and I know that's what you're doing. Good luck with whatever you decide to do! Guest guest
From what I see Topamax was made to relieve migraines and is used for seizures. As with many drugs there will be other uses, such as bi-polar disorder. You can do a search on it and find all kinds of information. It is used for weight loss for people with DMD, but that is a side effect of the drug and not what it was developed for. as if <xx_laura_s_xx@...> wrote: hi i was just wondering of someone could exsplane what topamx is and how it works iv never heard of it lauramechelle Joy wrote: I'm on depakote for the sma, but would come off to try topamx for a while. Guest guest
Hi Jeni-My doctor did warn that the medication could make me " slow " and I have read it could be bad for memory too! I can just imagine how that would go over at work! eek! How long has your daughter been taking it and how many mg? I do see there are a lot of cons, but my thinking is that it would only be temporary so I hope the bad stuff wouldn't have time to happen-or that my dosage would be too low to cause these things. Also I wouldn't want to remain on the medication for long- just until I reach a desired weight if it really helps. The depakote makes me hungry it seems all the time! And not just wanting a snack here and there, but stomach growling hungry! It's so not like me and I hate it!
