Has anyone had any success potty training a 17-month old boy?

Our oldest was 4.5 before it took during the daytime, and nearly 10 before

nighttime. First day, 18 changes of clothes.

Our youngest was 2 and it was his daycare teacher that recommended it. We were

not anticipating such an easy time of it, but she said he was ready, off go the

diapers, and he's never looked back since. Nighttime totally dry as well.

Don't know why the big difference. I think mostly it has to do with interest in

not being in diapers and whether they make the connection of the urges. My girl

friend trained her daughter when she was really young because she didn't want to

do diapers anymore. Another one had significant digestive problems for many

years because the center she was at forced it too much. So, there you have a

non-answer but my sympathies if you are trying it this summer :).

My 2 children were 14 months apart.  I believe they were so late learning

because I was dealing with so much.  I was away from my family and my husband

was in Iraq.

My daughter had just turned 3 and my son was nearly 4 (special needs).  2 months

before my son turned 4 I had finally had enough. I went and bought the cheapest

underwear I could find.  During the day, every 30 minutes or so I would take him

to the bathroom.  If he soiled the underpants, I would just throw them away.

Sounds like a waste, but pull ups are too.  If the kids do not feel it, they

will continue to use the pull ups as diapers.

During the night, I put those pads on the beds that they use in nursing homes to

keep from making a big mess.  I was blessed though.  No accidents ever at

night.  He had several accidents during the day, but finally got the message.  I

believe it took about 2 weeks and he was completely potty trained.

You have got to find a good time whenever you decide to go for it.  Being

consistent is the key.

This is pretty much what worked for my son, as well. At night, though, I kept

him in pull-ups for a few months (they were always so full in the am), but one

night we ran out. I told him, " Oops! The pull-ups are all gone. No accidents! "

and he has been dry at night since ;-)
