I'd like to also add that Special Olympics has been an awesome addition for

our son. I was resistant at first because he had always been in a

" normal " environment, but he has gained so much confidence through S.O. !!!

The

big upside (and there are MANY) is that they really meet your child where

he or she is at. Connor started out bowling pretty much pure gutter balls,

but learned over time, and now bowls much better than I can (ok...in my

case...that's not saying much). But it's been the same with all the sports.

He couldn't shoot a basket in basketball at all and the first year we

struggled, but now he sure can! And he has learned about working with others

as a team. Invaluable! (And they do team up and get competitive!). In our

area, the sports rotate, so when one ends, the next one starts up. That

way they can play all year long. They also have a year end banquet and

dances for the kids. I can't say enough good things.

I suppose it varies by the area, but there are enough sports to choose from

for girls and boys. Our area offers swimming, bowling, basketball,

volleyball, track, gymnastics, cheerleading (not an official Special Olympics

sport, but the girls love it and are so cute), etc.

It's also nice for the Mom's and Dad's. No pressure. No criticism. Just

good teamwork and enjoying watching the kids grow!

We do classes for homeschoolers at the ymca, not sure if you have any local.

Even some of the ones in smaller towns offer homeschool classes during the day.

We use 2 different local ymcas for classes.  I think one brach started a day

swim class at a parent request, and it has grown quickly.  It has been a good

connecting point with others and for social times with other kids.

I also tend not to do classes than stress my son out, but pick ones he is

successful in and enjoys, and then add others as he is ready.
