Guest guest
We started Effexor a few weeks ago and the first few days were very difficult--mostly my son was very emotional and intolerant. After about a week, he became more verbal, more responsive. I have noticed a slight decrease in appetite, but we are happy about that because he was eating everything and anything in sight before starting effexor. He actually lost a couple of pounds, which was great. His appetite returned to normal about two weeks after starting Effexor. The last three days, 's pretty much had no appetite. Refusing lunch and eating very little dinner. He's never displayed any side effects before - just wondering how long it might take to resolve. Guest guest
Alaine We tried effexor for three months with the same effect. When Dr G increased it we saw a great reduction in sociability and agitation. Connor lost tweleve lbs - 92 to 80. We are weaning him off it now. Guest guest
Kristi, As an adult I have taken Effexor, and while it is a very good and expensive medication for the treatment of depression, I would not want such a strong medication, with so many possible side effects in my child's body, if it were the case and he had to take this type of medicaiton. When you say Dr. G, are you referring to Dr. Lawrence Ginsberg, by any chance? **************Dell Deals: Treat yourself to a sweet deal on popular laptops! Guest guest
Yes Actually yes we saw a very good jump in cognitive thought. We are catching up in math and after a week or so he suddenly started calculating triple digit addition and subtraction mentally,( the negative was he was far less social and obstinate) . It was a quantum leap for him. We then increased (37.5 mg daily to 70 mg daily) we went up again but not so dramatically. Then he started showing signs of anger and negative thought, using terms and phrases that implied getting hurt or shooting something. I was at a ball game last week and while looking over the rail four stories up he said " No Jump " . I am taking him off it Scary, watch them closely. Guest guest
My son has actually increased his focus & interaction with us since adding effexor. However, when we tried to increase the amount, it made him very hyper/aggitated. So, it appears that it's a matter of finding the correct amount for the optimal results. Hope this helps. Guest guest
I definitely think it's one of the meds that reacts differently in each child. It's been great for Noah. He is more engaged socially and he's experienced an increase in expressive language. Zoloft, however, created a lot of anxiety and outbursts in which Noah said " hurt self. " I do think dosage increase need to be very slow; however, that's a problem with a capsule. Close observation is definitely the key to this class of drug. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone - this is so helpful. just turned 8. We've been on the protocol for two and a half years. We'll keep an eye out with the Effexor - from what I'm reading it seems to be a " heavier " med than others. Definitely seeing some good things re: language (like this morning, I asked my husband if he wanted coffee and he said yes. piped up and said " I want coffee, too. " Decaf, of course!!) I'd like to see what we see over the next couple of weeks, but I'd definitely be hesitant to increase the dose. Thanks again! Alaine
Guest guest
Getting the right dosage (and the right SSRI for that child) seems to be the key to the effectiveness of these drugs. I'm with you regarding upping the dose. It's something I would approach bery cautiously.
