Guest guest
I apologize because this is slightly off topic for this list. My father who is 72 climbed Mt. Whitney two years ago for his 70th birthday and now he can barely get out of bed. In the past six months, he's experienced shortness of breath, slurring of speech, cognitive dysfunction, loss of interest, balance and coordination problems, night sweats, muscle cramping and the list goes on. He's been to two cardiologists and two neurologists in addition to his general practitioner. He will see a pulmonologist on Monday for the shortness of breath. The neuros and cardios say there's nothing wrong that they can find. He is supposed to see another neurologist at UCLA who's a specialist in speech dysfunction. We are all really frustrated. He went from being a vibrant, outgoing grandfather, dad and husband who loved his life in Aspendell (8,500 foot level in the eastern Sierras near Bishop, CA)and went hiking, fishing, amateur nature photography, etc., to having no interest in or energy to do anything. In short, can anyone give me any advice on how to proceed, especially if the pulmonologist is a bust. We've been at this for six months. He keeps getting worse and we don't have any answers. My kids and I are patients of Dr. G's. I'm thinking this might be CFIDS/ME but realize we have to rule other things out first. He did have shingles a couple of years ago; could this have been a tipping point? I apologize for going on. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I value the collective experience and wisdom on this list. All the best, Robyn

Guest guest
Robyn, Have you spoken to Dr. G about your father? If not, please mention it to him... he might have some suggestions. Carolin G.
Guest guest
We had something similar happen to a friend who traveled to India on missionary work. I talked to Dr. regarding the situation. In this situation they did a blood workup on her and found no IgA, IgM or IgG. Definitely immuno compromised and was probably due to a contracted virus and somehow she was probably pre-disposed. She has many things similar to your father. She is being treated at the Mayo clinic very similar to after many " misdiagnosis " . The reason she is not currently seeing a doctor is because she has required hospitalizations and treatment where it would be difficult to do in an office setting and have continuity of services. I would definitely have your father looked at by a doctor even if he might have to use other doctors as well. It was through she found long term use of antifungals made her feel better and the Mayo clinic continued along the same protocol where before physicians were doing the standard short term antifungal treatment. Hope that helps. If you would like to talk to my friend, contact me off line and I will give her a call for you. Ann Re: CFIDS/ME Robyn, Have you spoken to Dr. G about your father?
