Guest guest
Hello group, I'm wondering if anyone of you had experienced what we're seeing with our 10yrs old son. We've been on famvir for 5mths & nizoral 3mths. My son is now avoiding all foods & has to be forced(we've to get firm) to eat at every meal. This had been going on for about a month & I had mentioned it to Dr.G. He had suggested not to force him & to just let him eat when he's hungry. We tried that but he would stay without food the whole day. He's loosing weight also & we're very concerned. When we started with Dr.G he was 68lbs now he is at 62lbs and most probably will loose more if we don't do something about it. Dr.G. says it has nothing to do with the meds he's on. But I'm not sure about that. My son never had this issue before starting on this protocol. We've not seen any gains at all with those 2 meds so far & I hope he'll switch us to other meds at our next consult. He wanted us to start on zoloft about 2wks ago but with the appetite issue we didn't feel comfortable to add one more strong med. I'm thinking the meds are causing this problem??? We're seeing a GI doc for the moment but please share if you have experienced this same problem?? thanks much!! God bless
Guest guest
Thanks Gaylen for your respond. Interestingly my son is having episode of constipation as well. About 2 weeks ago, he constipated for 3 days. I had to call the office & Dr.G. recommended mineral oil which seemed to help him go for a couple of days. But he's still not going daily. Did you have to switch from nizoral or is your child still on it? I'm wondering if we have to keep the oxypowder as long as he's on nizoral? & why does nizoral cause constipation??? If it's supposed to help, it should do the opposite, keep them regular??? thanks again! From: Googahly@... <Googahly@...> Subject: Re: loss of appetite & weight loss Date: Saturday, July 4, 2009, 3:12 AM My son has had several periods of not wanting to eat at all. Nizoral did contribute to that for awhile because it increased his problem with constipation. If your son isn't having a BM regularly, perhaps adding something to help with that may get him eating again. We tried many things and found that Oxypowder was the only thing that keeps him regular when on Nizoral. Gaylen ************ **Make your summer sizzle with fast and easy recipes for the grill. Guest guest
My son has been on mineral oil for a few years. It works GREAT, but when he goes off, he goes back to having potty problems. He has CP in addition to the " a word " and chronic constipation is an ongoing issue due to low tone. I have heard from my friend that miralax works really well, too. I don't know if Dr. G uses miralax. Gaylen - has your son been evaluated for parasites? His was a little different in that he was still eating but loosing weight. My husband was very concerned because our son was skinny to begin with and starting to look too thin. Dr. G told us not to worry that it was probably his body adjusting to everything. After several months of loosing he is beginning to gain weight back. We didn't really see many gains with our son either until recently. We went through a lot of difficult behavior and regression before we saw any huge gains. I am just starting to see wonderful things happening with my son. He came up to me a couple of days ago and told me life was no fun with out friends in it. Everywhere we go lately my son is meeting a new friend and playing well with them. He still has a long way to go but I am seeing the beginnings of an awakening in his development. Just curious if the diet is bringing in a lot of changes in his food choices? Maybe he is having some opposition to changing what he eats. Just a thought... I hope this helps you to keep moving forward. I think the hardest thing about this approach is giving time to really figure out what medicines work for your child's system. Guest guest
Hello -did the GI doctor recommend the GI series of tests to rule out any serious problems? When you have to force a child to eat there must be something that isn't right with the digestive system. Have you been keeping track of his bowel patterns? I'm sure the GI doctor will help you find out what is making him lose his appetite. Good luck and I hope it all works out. loss of appetite & weight loss Hello group, I'm wondering if anyone of you had experienced what we're seeing with our 10yrs old son. Guest guest
Yes, we did the GI blood tests & waiting for results. We're also taking stool samples to rule out colitis issue. The doc prescribed an acid medicine for the moment & if that helps he said we don't have to do endoscopy etc. later. we're praying we don't have to go that route. thx From: gvizjazz@... <gvizjazz@...> Subject: Re: loss of appetite & weight loss Date: Saturday, July 4, 2009, 6:46 PM Hello -did the GI doctor recommend the GI series of tests to rule out any serious problems? Guest guest
My baby girl had great difficulty eating, due to reflux which in turn damaged her digestive system to where she didn't tolerate certain foods. Does your son gag at all, even when he's not around food? She did, even in her sleep. She also vomited approximately every 30 hours. We had to do an extreme elimination diet (lamb and rice only for 3.5 weeks, then very slowly introduced one new food at a time and waited for up to 1 month before introducing another). After 11 months her system was 90% better and she can now eat & tolerate just about anything. She was intolerant to corn (which is in EVERYTHING, including hypo-allergenic formulas) and grapes and dairy. I was told there aren't any accurate tests for intolerances (which are different from allergies, which can be tested), which is why we had to do the extreme elimination diet. Guest guest
High fat foods for a child with a damaged digestive system is not always beneficial, and could be making the problem worse. I know.BTDT with my daughter. ALL the tests they did on my daughter revealed nothing structural was wrong, but she still could not eat more than a couple of bites at a time of anything until we figured out what food(s) were causing her problems. From there, she took off and has thrived ever since. It was a long road - 30 months and we almost lost her before we figured out how to help her. It was another mom who helped, not any of the 17 different doctors in 2 different states I took her to looking for answers. Her 2 GI doctors (one in No. CA and one in So. CA) were going to kill her because they refused to listen when we kept telling them it was something we were feeding her that was making her so sick! We were EXTREMELY lucky that our daughter did not learn to associate eating with pain - once that happens it can be a really long road back to getting them to eat orally. Guest guest
Anorexia and bulemia seem to have an association/connection with PANDAS - I would recommend having ASO titers checked. I always have a complete loss of appetite when my PANDAS is exacerbated. ________________________________ From: " CaCI32@... Guest guest
Caroline- This may seem gross but what are her stools like? If your child has abnormal stools they may aren't getting the nutrition they need from their foods. My daughter has had chronic diarrhea/mushy stools for as long as I can remember. It was a number of issues, not just one. Issue 1 - yeast overgrowth, we tx'd with Diflucan Issue 2, multiple food intolerances. (and there are ALOT of those) Issue #3 we did have her stool tested and she had other pathogenic bacteria in her stool that was causing a chronic inflammation. Her doctor prescribed a probiotic from Klaire Labs that is super-powerful and she has good normal stools again. From the stool analysis we determined she didn't need digestive enzymes. If your daughter has any or all of these issues the chronic inflammation will definitely inhibit her appetite and her weight gain. My daughter has been gaining weight steadily not since we have done and having normal stools means she should be getting her nutrients from her foods. She actually looks healthy and her ribs aren't showing anymore. I hope this helps, sometimes all you need to hear is what worked for someone else! - > > From: gvizjazz@... <gvizjazz@...> > Subject: Re: loss of appetite & weight loss > > Date: Saturday, July 4, 2009, 6:46 PM > > Hello -did the GI doctor recommend the GI series of tests to rule out any serious problems? Guest guest
Her stools fine. She doesnt seem to know the difference between hunger and stomach aches. This morning for example, i could not get her to eat breakfast and we have everything from cold cereal to waffles. Suppose to see neruopyshc to help with this.
