A Message from SafeMinds Board Member Deirdre Imus

Fifty years ago, parents had a good understanding of their responsibilities..

They were our lifeline and provided us with food, clothing, shelter, education,

and, of course, love. Like parents throughout history, they did whatever was in

their power to keep us safe and protect us from harm. But in today's society,

what does it really mean, to " keep our children safe, protect them from harm " ?

In today's society, the responsibility of raising -- and protecting -- our

children has become a lot more complicated.

In 1998, when my husband and I opened the gates to the Imus Ranch for Kids with

Cancer, we witnessed on a daily basis the many challenges kids face trying to

cope with their disease. As the years went by, we began to notice the increased

number of children battling not only cancer but also other serious illnesses

like asthma, severe allergies, ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression and autism

spectrum disorders.

Why are so many childhood diseases on the rise?

The simple answer is because toxic chemicals are everywhere and not enough

attention is being given to prevention. While we are enjoying many conveniences,

time saving products and services that make life easier than ever before, these

changes in our lifestyle, diet, and environment have taken a dramatic -- and

tragic -- toll on our children's health.

It was my experiences with the sick children at the ranch and the birth of my

own son, Wyatt, that made me more determined than ever to help educate others

about dangerous environmental exposures and the preventable diseases they cause.

I cannot begin to count how many times I have heard a parent of a sick child

tell me " If I only knew then, what I know now. " Clearly the important warnings

about how toxic environmental exposures compromise the health of children are

not reaching enough parents.

In response, in 2001 I founded the Deirdre Imus Environmental Center for

Pediatric Oncology to research and communicate this information to the public to

prevent harmful exposures to environmental factors, with a focus on pediatric

cancer. Along the way, I found another group of leaders with a similar mission

and was motivated to become a board member of their organization: SafeMinds.

SafeMinds was the first organization to link the mercury based preservative

thimerosal in vaccines with the symptoms of autism. Since that time, the

organization has worked tirelessly to educate the public, the government and the

scientific community on the dangers of mercury. It is organizations like

SafeMinds that are trying to make the world a safer place for our children.

Take action to protect our children from harmful and unnecessary mercury

exposure. Give to SafeMinds today by clicking here.

We cannot control everything - but we can control some things. Making wise

decisions is crucial to protecting our children and keeping them safe. And when

it comes to reducing toxic environmental exposures that harm our children, all

of us have more power, more control than we might think. Part of that power is

supporting organizations that are working to protect children from injury.

Please consider making a contribution to SafeMinds today. Your support, at any

level, will advance research and help stop the unnecessary exposure to mercury.

We will not give up on our efforts to make our children's world as safe as

possible - but we can't make the impact we need to make without your help.

With gratitude,

Deirdre Imus
