Guest guest
Hi , I'm not familiar with Handle. I had both of my 7 y.o. twins do the Brain Highways programs. My son has ASD and CP (both mild). He did it for over a year. In the last year, he has become much better regulated now, and has more strength, better balance, better endurance, and more speech. We have done a lot of interventions with him since he was an infant (they were born 14 weeks prematurely), and I cannot say that it was BH that made a huge difference, but I think it helped a lot (as have pretty much all the interventions we have done). Part of the 'problem' with BH for him was that they are (IMVHO) still developing their program to help those with the most profound needs. I feel like the program may be more refined to help kids like my son in the next few years. As an example, he had a very difficult time physically doing the swords the right way (for a year!). His head simply did not want to turn all the way. The director finally suggested (after doing the program for a year), that it may be necessary to reach his neuro-pathways through this feet, and that I should massage them and press on pressure points. I was getting pretty tired of the whole program by this point, and we are doing some really targeted therapies specifically modified for him, so I have let BH go by the wayside. Overall, I think it helped but I think if it were more targeted from the beginning, he would have made even more notable progress. His twin sister completed her program and I have to say, I have noticed some real changes. I put her through BH because she is a TINY peanut with no body fat, yet complained ALL the time about feeling hot, but her thyroid tested fine. She no longer does that and it's not due to anything but BH. She is much less fidgety and her handwriting has improved (she used to make all of her letters from the bottom up, for example). I totally get the BH philosophy, and I think it's a REALLY great program. It is a BIG commitment and requires discipline and diligence. We did take short (2-3 week) breaks during the year I did it with my son. I may go back to it if I still feel a 'gap' when we are done with some of the other things we are doing (1:1 private OT, ST, LIFT listening fitness training, RDI). Could you please share your experience with the program. Do they take three year olds? How does Brain Highways compare to Handle?
