Marta,

Wishing you the best results for your surgery and I am also anxious to hear what

your results are have not heard much about this surgery. I had the old L4-5

lamindectomy (sp?) and had terrible results as it did not take the pain away

from my back at all and then the doctor said well it was to help your legs well

at that time I had no leg problems.... dogs I have two tiny 3 and 4 lbs

chihuahua's that are the loves of my life. I do not know how I would get through

the terrible nights without them. They are so loving and I too have sleep apnea

and my girl wakes me up. She is a service dog so she gets to go everywhere with

me, but since I got her sister unless I can take them both I leave them at home

together. But that hardly happens as they are welcome everywhere we go even my

grocery store loves the girls, they go to my support groups, my doctor

appointments. I get really anxious when I do not have them near me. I live alone

so without them I would feel so empty and alone. Just do not over  do and hope

you have someone to help you. nan

Hi Marta,

I feel for you and hope your surgery goes well.  I would be terriied also, all

sorts of thoughts going through my head.  I bet you will feel better too, once

it is done and you get used to it.  Sorry for the late email, where does time

go.

Just think of the time you will get to spend with your dogs when you are able.

I envy you that you can have dogs.  I wish I could,  I have had pets all my

life, indoor/outdoor as they wished :) . My other half has sleep apnea so we

can't have our 2 cats inside at all.  That depresses me as it is hard or me to

be comfy outside very long.

I can't wait to see how your stimulater works out for you, Good luck and I will

send good thoughts your way.

hugs, Coleen  :)

Only for this moment…*sigh* I got my surgery date for the Spinal Cord

Stimulator

on the 22nd of this month. Honestly, I'm terrified… For the first two weeks, I

doubt I'll be able to do ANYTHING…..and I can't even have my dogs with me.

*sigh*

Hi Marta,

I will ask my Doctor.

I took the hard seat that came with the bike and replaced it with a much more

comfy seat. Actually, my guy did all the work as it is hard for me to bend over

with my bad lower back and all. I just hate being so inactive! My bike was

bought years ago when my legs weren't so bad. My guy has been riding his

motorcycle which is a comfy cruiser for two and I get so jealous that I can't

hardly go anywhere, so I am taking baby steps despite the pain just to ride

around the short block on my bicycle.. It is affecting my sciatca on my left leg

though, so I don't do very much. I simply can't. My legs tingle down to my toes

and I have lost feeling in them except nerve pain, basically. I have no pain

relief so I have to lay down a lot still. The weather has been fairly nice so I

try to enjoy it a little. Why do we have to suffer anyways?? No, don't answer

that.

Sounds like you are doing better than I am.....good :)

take care, Coleen

Definitely ask your doctor, but as long as you CAN do it, I think it would

be fine. According to my doctor, bike riding is the safest on the body and

easiest on the joints... That said, I can't ride my stationary bike,

because it kills my knees, though it's not supposed to. BUT, I can't use an

elliptical either, for the same reason.

A few years ago, when my doctor suggested I join a gym, I knew that I

couldn't get out to one, so I bought several workout type machines,

including a treadmill, elliptical, bike, weight machine, total gym, etc.

Of those, the only one I can use AT ALL is the treadmill. Before my

arthroscopic knee surgery, I was walking 3-5 times a week for an hour at a

time (up to 3MPH), now I'm lucky if I can get a mile once a week..but I do

what I can.

Subject: Question, ......back problems/trying to ride a

bicycle.

Hi all,

I have a question. If someone has Sciatica, RA, DDD,and multiple disk

problems in their Lumbar ( L4-5, etc) should they be trying to ride a

bicycle even on flat surfaces and just on very short rides? I would imagine

you would say this person should ask their Dr. about this. Is it safe for

the spine to do this? I realize that this might vary from person to person

but I thought I would throw it out there.

Thanks, Coleen

They did a trial stim on me a few months ago and the results were promising.

For me, the main thing we're trying to address is the RSD pain, but the trial

showed that the improvement of the pain from the herniated disk was about 80%

better….while the RSD was only about 65% improved. But remember, this is not

a surgery to " fix " anything… the pain is only controlled by the USE of the

stim…..stop using it and the pain control goes away.

I used to train handicap assistance dogs, and I've worked on training my big

girl (Shay, German Shepherd, 2 years), but it gets harder and harder the worse I

get…but I have other, small dogs including two former (now retired due to age)

assistance dogs…. I love them, they're part of what keeps me going.

My 21 year old daughter will be helping me after the surgery….she comes over

every day when her husband goes to work, so she'll be here if I need her….
