Guest guest
I am in south Florida and it is awful here. I have been lied to at IEPs. teachers and admin people have propagated incidents to support poor placement. Teachers aids have give my son foods and treats for multiple years and have denied it only to continue the process. The one positive school; experience I have known was a friend in Mass outside of Boston. Bill From: jlhank80 <jlhank80@...> Subject: Which states have the best services for kids with autism? Guest guest
Hello Bill and -Florida also has the problem of a long wait list for something very important when your child turns 21-the Medicaid Waiver. The Medicaid Waiver is the source of funding for services at the adult level in every state. New York is good as my son got on the waiver after only a few months wait. California also has great services and I don't think there's a wait list. There is a site called state of the states for disabilities. You might want to check it out for more info. Guest guest
I am in California, and we are still getting aides for our children and respite from the Regional Center, but we have to fight for everything. Some school districts are better than others and some Regional Centers are better than others. Where you live in California can make all the difference. Guest guest
Kristy-That's awful! Here in New York we also have a budget crisis that has affected adult services. My son's first adult program was delayed opening by 6 months because of a budget freeze last year. The plans to build additional sites for adult programs have been scrapped as well as plans for group homes. Some adult programs have no openings with wait lists. The economic crisis has had a negative impact on services all over the country. Does anyone know if there is a wait list for the California Medicaid waiver? Guest guest
Connor is 11. We got the mini waiver at 8 after 5yrs by being loud and annoying. I used the short dollars for behavioral support but it took 2 years to get an effective team in place. We have spent summers and after school home schooling on our own. This Summer I taught fractions, Reading comp and A program from his speech teacher that enforced the w questions. For us it is all about academics. I have him in general ed for the first time. He is behind grade level but has been accepted into his primary classes. (They can't toss him he is reading, writing calculating math through fractions and decimals) We have had several incidents during the first three weeks but he is navigating the schedule, doing home work one-on-one and getting by. School bus alone each way. Aftercare next week. This is a kid that has been in an EXCLUSION CLASS for six years. Never change classrooms(year to year), same teacher and aids, same classmates. Yes it is unbelievably hard on him and me but he is transitioning to the real world, One of his six teachers had a son that was allergic to yellow die. I was in the IEP when she told me. I asked how the allergy affected her son and she said it made him violent and aggressive - FIRST TIME EVER I MEET AN EDUCATOR THAT HAD A CLUE. WOW!!! Going to be a tough couple of months but Connor is experiencing real kids in a real world for the first time. I pray I can make it stick!!!!! Guest guest
Bill-That's fantastic!! He will probably do so well that he won't even need the waiver by the time he turns 21! How did you set up the home academics? I always like to hear how other parents are faring with home schooling. I am hoping to keep his academics going at home forever! Guest guest
I had them put a set of text books for home on the IEP. He and I went through the review pages at the end of each chapter for early chapters his class is past and if he new the work we went on. If he could not do the work we went back and worked through the chapter. That worked for math. For language based work I asked the speech teacher for the corrected work sheets for his language level. We worked through the w, questions using diagrams, maps and picture pages until he understood the system and the nature of the w questions. Now I am working through lower elementary school reading work books from the teacher store (ABC store). Science and history are difficult but he has been attracted to experiments on the web. So I have started with low grade school experiments related to his class work. magnets and such. Guest guest
We, too, still get an aide (through the school district, not regional center) and respite (through RC). My son's RDI program was cut, but we are fighting with several other families to keep it. Guest guest
I've heard over and over again that certain counties in NY are the best. Also, Wisconsin has a good waiver, but it takes about a year to get on it, but then cover 35+ hours of intensive ABA therapies from a private practice of your choice are covered for several years. > > Hi listmates! Guest guest
I'm not Carol, but when we lived in South Lake Tahoe, we had ALTA for my twins early intervention and it was incredible. Now we're in San Diego and I LOVE our service coordinator, but they really don't have much to offer these days except respite. We used to get an educational advocate but that was cut recently. We are currently fighting to keep RDI. Kristy From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of gvizjazz@...
