Guest guest
Hi Sallie, I'm happy so many other people have given you options to look at. One more to look at, and this is a legitimate one... It started with me as a neckache, pulsing up into my head. My head became one large headache and would become numb. The only thing that helped it was excedrine PM. As it turned out, it was not directly related to my arthritis. It was the C2 and C3 vertebrae deteriorating. It made it so the disks slid around, putting pressure on my spine causing the pain and numbness... My doc told me if I had waited too much longer or had a sudden jolt of those disks, I could have become paralyzed. I got in and had fusion of C2 and C3, with a couple bands and large screws holding it in place. This all was only found with an MRI of my head AND neck... Again, not necessarily what's wrong, but don't just automatically assume it's arthritis. Although the deterioration was due to my arthritis and years of prednisone... michael > > Hi every-one > > All weekend I have had a really horrible pain on the right side of my neck, running from the bottom of my neck up to my ear and into my head, it feels like I have lumpy blood running through my vein, if I apply pressure it kinda feels a bit better, although now, it is all just aching. I know it sounds weird, but it is hard to describe. I have also had a migraine or headache all weekend. Does any one know what this might be? is it a new symptom for me related to A.S? or something new?? I have tried looking on Google but came up with nothing. Guest guest
Sallie, I am not speaking from personal experience on the subject of headaches, but you may want to read up on giant cell arteritis or temporal arteritis combined with polymyalgia rheumatica. That combination can produce many of the symptoms of RA plus king-size headaches. Go to www.google.com and enter either of these search phrases: + " giant cell arteritis " + " polymyalgia rheumatica " + " temporal arteritis " + " polymyalgia rheumatica " In particular, see http://www.aafp.org/afp/20000401/2061.html If you believe that you may have temporal arteritis, you should see a rheumatologist immediately. Guest guest
Hi Harold Thank you for responding to my email :-) I truly hope I do not have giant cell arteritis or polymyalgia rheumatica, I have read up on it and while I have some some symptoms mostly I do not, so shall see what my Dr says on Wednesday. I think just having A.S is enough for one person, shame we can not pass a law saying only one illness per person! ;-) Many thanks for you help Sallie " Harald Weiss, Technical Marketing Group " <hweiss@...> wrote: Sallie, I am not speaking from personal experience on the subject of headaches, but you may want to read up on giant cell arteritis or temporal arteritis combined with polymyalgia rheumatica. Guest guest
Hello Debra, If you feel that inflammation is causing harm to your body, then there are two things that were recommended to me by Dr. Nusbaum of the Center for Holistic Medicine, www.centerforholisticmedicine.com One is to avoid all dairy products from cows. This includes milk, ice cream, yogurt, etc, unless you end up cooking it, (ie. bread, etc). Also, he recommended Traumeel (limited benefit for me), and Vitalzym X (huge benefit for me). One last thing. If you have a doctor that is not responding for an entire week, you might consider looking elsewhere. I have gotten responses within an hour or two on weekends when I call my doctor. Of course, I don't call for anything minor. Info on how to find an AP doc is below. Good luck! ~Jeff _________________________________________________ My story is below....... My name is Jeff and I have RA. I have gotten a lot of useful information from this Group and I wanted to pass on what I have learned from my experience with RA. I don't know of anyone that I am related to, by blood, that also has RA. I contracted scabies in January of 2004. I was prescribed in March, 2004, two drugs which I believe caused my RA: 1) On 3/19/04, ne lotion (USP 1%), generic for Kwell, Bio-Well * This is a pesticide of the organochlorine type, in the same group as DDT * This is classified as a carcinogen 2)On 3/24/04, Permethrin Cream, 5%, generic for Acticin, Elimite, Nix, Rid * Each gram contains 50mg of permethrin * Less than 2% absorbed into bloodstream On 4/21/04, I was diagnosed with RA by a rheumatologist. But, he later confessed that he could not do anything for me until my RA got really bad at which point he would " hit me really hard " with some cancer-fighting drugs. I stopped going to him and soon after made an appointment with a holistic doctor, Dr. Nusbaum, from the Center for Holistic Medicine in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Dr. Nusbaum is an associate of Dr. Brownstein. See www.drbrownstein.com and www.centerforholisticmedicine.com Dr. Nusbaum confirmed by tests that I had RA and was infected with mycoplasma. He then prescribed for me: For inflammation: 1) Traumeel, 10 drops three times a day 2) Vitalzym X, 500mg tablets, now 8 tablets three times a day 3) Kaprex by Metagenics, 440mg - four a day 3) Ultra Inflam X (detoxification for a short period) For mycoplasma infection: 1) Minocin (AP- antibiotic protocol)100mg twice a day on M,W,F 2) Bifa 15 (to restore my good bacteria)1.1g a day For hormonal balance: 1) Testosterone cream, and monthly shots 2) Pregnenolone, now 50mg twice a day 3) Armour Thyroid Hormone, now 75mg a day For vitamin D deficiency: 1) Bio-D-Mulsion Forte, Emulsified Vitamin D, 4000 IU per day, which is 1000% RDA __________________________________________________ I did a search through the past year of postings in this Group and I have not found anyone talking about Vitalzym X from World Nutrition www.worldnutrition.info/index.html or www.vitalzymx.com Although it is not cheap, I noticed an immediate improvement in my inflammation after taking this product. Since I am not a physician, I am not going to pretend to tell you how enzymes can naturally consume inflammation and pass it out of your body naturally. But, I highly recommend that anyone fighting an inflammatory condition like RA look very closely at this natural method. It can be purchased at www.centerforholisticmedicine.com . Vitalzym is the older, weaker version and Vitalzym X is the stronger version. To purchase Vitalzym X, you must create a user id and password. As with any medication, you should be under supervision of a doctor. I was prescribed 3-500mg pills, three times a day. I was told to increase to 4 pills, three times a day after two weeks. And, I should keep increasing by one pill (three times a day) until the inflammation subsided. Some patients were taking as many as 10 pills, three times a day. Too many pills, and you could have diarrhea, too few and your inflammation would not go away. ____________________________________________________ I know of two ways that someone can find an AP doctor, using two websites: 1) American College for the Advancement in Medicine www.acam.org There is a referral section. From the home page, go to " Public " / " Find a Doctor " . Enter your zip code, city, or state. 2) International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP) www.iacprx.org There is a referral section. From the home page, go to " Referral Service " . Find the compounding pharmacist nearest you, and ask them who they'd recommend for the condition that you have, or the protocol that you want to use. Guest guest
Jeff, Thanks for reminding me about Traumeel. I would like to comment on Traumeel. People don't always know how to take homeopathic medicines. For one, if taken by mouth one should not eat or drink 1/2 hr. before and after. If they are the pellets or tablets, don't touch them. There are also substances that antidote, which means they make the remedy useless. Aromatic substances like camphor, mint and tea tree oil are antidotes. People who take homeopathic remedies use special tooth paste without any such substances. Geoff is more knowledgeable on this topic. Just thought to offer this for consideration :-) Ute

Guest guest
I am pretty sure this is a federal and not state issue and would be adjudicated via an administrative law judge. It may have been litigated previously. You need to find out if it is a federal or state issue and what the specific regulation states regarding the definition of a qualified professional for these types of services. It is going to come down to how loosely defined this is. If it were me I would call Sussan and Greenwald. They are in NJ but if the issue is federal they will know the answer. They have answered questions like this twice for me in the past. I spoke with Greenwald. Her partner, Theodore Sussan, is on the Speechville Board and has an autistic son. Also, you can ask the school for the specific regulation that allows this in writing. Interesting to see what they come up with. Sussan and Greenwald's site www.special-ed-law.com/ I do not work for them. > > OK ladies, I need some help. I'm desparately trying to find out if > legally a sped teacher can provide speech therapy. Guest guest
If I am not mistaken, federal law says that a tech trained in techniques may do these services (which is why a parent should ALWAYS ask for the experience and credentials of anyone working with their special needs child - BECAUSE the law also states that you can have persons of the highest training work with your children, especially if the need someone with more credentials) I would think that severe apraxia and dyspraxia would indicate the need for someone with more training. If they ask you WHY tell them " I don't know because I am not an expert in this field - are you? Oh you're not? then that is why it would be best to have an expert in this field to handle things because like any severe condition we don't know what we don't know " Others may read the IDEA differently, but this is my take on it, and what I have known to occur. bault123 <kault@...> wrote: OK ladies, I need some help. Guest guest
My understanding is that while IDEA is a federal law that states " interpret and implement " differently. For example, here in NY the qualifications for an SLP in EI are different then Preschool. In EI you have to be a licensed SLP (with a master's degree in speech and passed certain tests) but for preschool & public school you can practice with a Teacher of the Speech & hearing handicapped license (a bachelor's degree and a teaching certificate). Most SLP's (including myself) have both levels of certification for job flexability. The bottom line is the IEP is a legal document and if it lists the provider as an SLP then no, a teacher could not provide. BUT if it lists teacher consult for speech services then they could. Try your state ed department to see what their " provider qualifications " are and DO NOT sign off on an IEP with the speech provider listed as anything but an SLP. On a related note, many SLP's are not experianced in providing services for apraxia. Always ask. > > > > OK ladies, I need some help. Guest guest
You might want to call ASHA to see what they have to say about it. They may even have guidelines for SLP's with regards to overseeing other specialists. M. > > OK ladies, I need some help. Guest guest
If that is the case then the IDEA codification of qualifications is probably loose because as a general rule federal law trumps state law so NY would not bother to differentiate if the federal law laid it out. , your posts are so helpful. > > > > > > OK ladies, I need some help. Guest guest
have you asked about the qualifications of the person they are assigning to your child? just wondering- when my 6dd was in EI, they sent a Special Ed teacher to my house. She finished with us and was gone. A couple years later when my older son was going into the local elementary school- I ran into the same special ed teacher. She said she is a Speech Teacher for the school district but her Masters is in Special Education. I just can't see them just picking any old person and saying " ok, now you are a speech teacher? " . it just doesn't make sense! ask the people at the school if she is qualified as a speech teacher before dragging all the legal info into it. hope this helps. Now that same speech teacher is dying to have my daughter in her school, but she is off in another ES where the self-contained classes are. Guest guest
Sorry, maybe I said that the wrong way. Federal law is the floor...meaning basic rights from federal law must be incorporated into state law. State law cannot give you less rights than federal law. It must meet or beat federal law. > > > > > > > > OK ladies, I need some help. I'm desparately trying to find out > > if > > > > legally a sped teacher can provide speech therapy. Guest guest
Again, there is a major difference in education for a Teacher of the spech/hearing handicapped (TSHH) and a licensed SLP. The TSHH has an undergrad degree in speech which is heavily geared towards education (including student teaching) and " light " on speech/language courses v.s. a licensed SLP which has a masters degree in speech/language with 2 - 3 years of " communication disorders " course work and multiple clinical practicums in rehab, clinics, etc. THERE IS A DRAMATIC DIFFERENCE THERE. I have both an undergrad degree in speech and a masters in speech (1998/2000 respectively)and I still felt undereducated on how to treat Apraxia. I knew it when I saw it but didn't know how to treat it well. I took many many continuing ed. courses including PROMPT to become a " specialist " in apraxia. Hope this is helpful. > > have you asked about the qualifications of the person they are > assigning to your child? just wondering- when my 6dd was in EI, they > sent a Special Ed teacher to my house. Guest guest
Hi, I'm and attorney barred in Florida and the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Florida. Federal law always controls the rights/obligations of citizens (and sometimes states)--it's called federal preemption. Once a federal law is passed signalling the intention of the federal government to legislate an area of rights or obligations, the states must implement the federal mandate (many times it's an unfunded mandate, meaning higher local/state taxes to implement the federal law). This is how state implementation standards for the same federal law can differ. For instance, federal law H.R. 218 gives retired law enforcement officers the right to concealed carry firearms anywhere in the USA, but it's up to states to provide for the method of assessing these retirees and ensuring that they meet the minimum federal standards as outlined in H.R. 218. This means different minimum shooting requirements for annual qualification depending on the retiree's state's minimum shooting requirement for its peace officers. Some states may have rigorous courses of fire, others may have lax courses of fire, but every retiree who successfully shoots the course of fire in his state as required by his state is authorized to be issued a state card pursuant to H.R. 218. The same for deciding who is qualified to give services to our kids. Services must be given, but by whom they are given is up to each state (different states have different licensure requirements for professionals working with ESE kids). Hope this helps. Guest guest
First let me say that you ladies are awesome! I've gotten some great suggestions from all of you. I did contact the ASHA and got the Ohio assoc. from which I did get a response which said that it must be a SLP, not a sped teacher. By the way, the school district said that it would be an itinerant teacher, which I clarified by asking " you mean it would be a special education teacher like myself providing speech and language therapy to my son who has apraxia? " The SERRC center rep (also rep for prek services for our SD) said yes, but they are really great people. Hello, I don't care how fabulous they are, are they qualified to provide a much needed service to my son? In my book and many other professionals opinions that I've questioned, the answer is no! The SLP who did my son's eval said that most of the itinernat teachers from the SERRC are older women (in my own experience that is true, itinerants tend to be " older " (read - close to retirement)teachers that need a break from the classroom - not to say they aren't great teachers, but, that's just my experience). Again, they are special education teachers, the SLP say she's " trained " these itinerants so they are very good. What she means be trained, I don't know yet, but I will find out. Guest guest
, I didn't see your post in any way as badgering or yelling. It seemed that you only wanted to emphasize a very important part for the purpose of saving kids anxiety further down the road (not to mention wasted years in useless services). I sometimes cap things of significance as well in posts because it is harder to use bold print or italics or underline on a message board. No worries, thanks so much for your wisdom and care! <Kglashauser@...> wrote: It has been brought to my attention that this post was " badgering " and percieved as " yelling " . New Balance shoes see to help most of us most of the time. Overall when I have had the proper fitting new balance shoes I have been happy with them. You may need custom molded orthodics for your shoes. Some insurances will pay for them, otherwise they are about $400. Good Luck
Guest guest
Hi, I have to add that I love my SAS shoes. many years ago before dx my feet were killing. My Dr. was no help in finding relief. I went to a family run shoe store and she listened to me and suggested that I buy the SAS shoes. With in several weeks my feet were much better. I even wear them with formal clothing.
