Guest guest
My 13 year old son, mild PDD, learning disabilities has over the last month starting having tics. They started mild, eye blinking and have emerged into head shaking back and forth, pretty severe looking. My other autistic son was diagnosed with pandas at age 7. He is now 11. His pandas is pretty much under control although OCD is still an issue. So, I am familiar with tics from my other son. I am so surprised that my older son might have tourettes. Maybe i have seen once or twice the 13 year old presenting in anxious situations looking upward and appearing to grimace every now and then.He did have a cough and a staph infection about a month ago when this first started and he was put on amoxicillin. My pandas son was also showing some tics and acting behavioral so we went on his penicillin regiment and he's been great but the older one is an absolute mess. His behavior is fine he's anxious but that is because of the beginning of school. I am having blood drawn tomorrow, testing strep titers and then making an appt with a neurologist. Any suggestions from the group. My younger one follows diet and is on valtrex and diflucan. Has anyone had a sibling with these tendencies and or ideas for natural remedies while waiting out these terrible tics.Appreciate any feedback! Guest guest
Hi Vicki, Staph & Mycoplasma Pneumonia bacteria can both trigger similar symptoms to the strep in PANDAS. Mycoplasma triggers at about 50% severity in my experience. (That could have been the cause of a cough - very common.) Sounds like he had a double whammy. Also sometimes the antibiotics we're treating with can irritate during the time you're on them, so you may have to wait till a course is finished to see if it helps, and the next try you may want to do a different group that still covers the bacteria but may not increase the TH1 response. Maybe ery-ped would be better next time (although I don't tolerate that one as well myself but I think kids may be too young for doxycycline). Anyway, his ASO titers could still be negative & yet he could develop tics and ocd and anxiety in response to bacteria. Good luck, HTH- ________________________________ From: Vicki Eisen <vickieisen@...> nids Sent: Sunday, September 13, 2009 6:30:41 PM Subject: Tics My 13 year old son, mild PDD, learning disabilities has over the last month starting having tics. Guest guest
Hi Thanks for your response. I think this was triggered by the staph infection/ cough too. amoxicillin has done nothing except it did clear the rash from the staph and the cough. i have him now on pen vk because it works wonders for his brother. So far the tics are as bad as ever. I did blood work today but my guess is that strep titers will be normal. His brother was having tics too so It just seems too coincidental. Pen vk helped Jake but not Alec. I have an appt with a Ped Neurologist in 2 weeks. Is there anything more you can think of in the interim? Should i call Dr / or NNYAutism Center? Guest guest
I'd call Dr or Kathy but still see the neurologist. Some are more 'up' on this than others but I don't know if you'll find an immediate answer or solution. Hopefully they will cool down. A few different antibiotic trials may be warranted. I have seen antibiotics worsen my ocd but I couldn't really tell you which. Also, things that may not bother him typically can exacerbate the system when it's already 'hot', like foods, other infections, yeast, etc. Hope you can get some help. Is he already a patient of Dr ? That would be a blessing. ________________________________ From: Vicki Eisen <vickieisen@...> Sent: Monday, September 14, 2009 9:25:49 PM Subject: Re: Tics Hi Thanks for your response.
