Guest guest
Kathy, My favorite thing to say is: an ounce of GOOD biomed is worth a pound of therapy. If you get your kid medically stable the therapy can become obsolete or extremely effective. I was also told all of the things my daughter would never do when she was diagnosed with autism 2 years ago. She had moderate autism. Today after less than a year with Dr. and the NNY Autism Center my daughter is doing things the doctors and therapists said she would never do and we have PEACE again in my home. My daughter would not qualify today to have autism, although she has language delay and that just takes some time to get better. It has been a hard road but my child has a fighting chance at a normal life! Don't believe what people tell you. Our kids are physically sick, they need help! I have 2 NT children and they act atrociously when they are sick, what do we expect from our chronically ill children with ASD to behave? These poor kids. I pray people will wake up! Good luck to you! > > Hi , > > This should be a happy time of my life but every yr when my son gets older I start to go in depression ,anger failure etc mode. I am sure you all have been there. Guest guest
Kathy, my son is 5 1/2 he is doing better (very slowly...) socially, in terms of attention, mood, etc. in terms of language he is not progressing very much... but to be honest we've seeing a lot of progress during the last 3 months with antivirals. he is a different child, and even though his language still not hear, now I do have some hope that biomed will help there as well. therapy didnt work when he wasnt feeling well, now is working a little better. Guest guest
Dear Kathy. You sound like you are very hands-on and this will go very far to help your son. There are a lot of good home therapy products from companies such as Linquisystems, Great Ideas for Teaching, and SuperDuperInc. My son did not have any expressive language until he learned how to read. A lot of those programs combine using the visual (words) to help speed up the processing, develop expressive language, pragmatic language etc. Once you son gets better expressively and gets the hang of it, then it seems like it is easier to learn language more and more naturally through the ear. There are also exercises with these companies that help with specific auditory processing exercises, logic, reasonsing, etc. The other thing that has been helpful is Floortime. The basic premise is to take what your son is interested in, join in with him, and expand his play. This also creates an interest in his part to interact with you and eventually, the circle gets wider. With any therapy, take the parts that you believe will work for you. For example, my son was nine years old when we started Floortime, so I did not begin by having him " feed the baby " . If you google Stanley Greenspan, there are some terrific books on DIR/Floortime therapy. I have found with my son, that I have to show him EVERYTHING. Sometimes with these kids, it doesn't initially occur to then to try to communicate with you when they have a problem, something is bothering them, or they disagree with you about something. So we started out that I would offer him a multiple choice and model the proper way of telling me what he needed (together.), to reviewing these situations that come up in our life on paper and writing down/talking about what is appropriate, to my just asking him these things and trying to preview with him. You will often see behavior when a child just doesn't know how to effectively get his ideas across. You are smart to question those ABA therapists. Some are good, others not. The ones that go by their own manuals all the time and never look at development are not good. Also, the ones that all they want to do is collect data and give your kid a gummy for doing something are the worst for our kids. ABA should be natural. I respectfully disagree with the comment about Biomed. Biomed does not help a child catch up on development. This work must be done by the parents and their therapists. Getting the body better is great, but whereever your son stopped developing is where you should start from. Kids don't automatically catch up because of whatever they are medically/biomedically doing. Good luck to you. Lynn From: jlhank80 <jlhank80 (DOT) com> Subject: Re: New .
