Guest guest
I tried so hard to talk our Ped into Abilify vs Risperdal to no advail. I myself got my doctor to change my med to Abilify from Zyprexa. No difference for myself. My goal is to lose the 20lbs I gained on Zyprexa (which was used off lable to keep me from wringing someone's neck at my sons school for lack of doing their damn job, but that is another story) Meanwhile, today was our monthly check up on the Risperdal, and 10 lbs later he spoke of Geodon. But stuck with the Rispedal due to the interaction the doctor seen between our son and hiself which to date, when our son was in the dr. office, he'd scream, and want out ASAP!!!! Today however was different. A friend of my has her son on the Abilify, he was taken off Risperdal due to his body quit producing bone marrow. It is still in the wait and see stage of how it effects him. He too is 10. -- Abilify? Has anyone tried the newly-approved Abilify (aripiprazole) (http://www.healthyplace.com/Communities/Thought_Disorders/schizo/news /abilify_3.htm)? Our 10-year-old (who was previously diagnosed bipolar, but now schizophrenia) started it in mid-December. We are very happy with the results thus far! She had previously been on Seroquel, then Risperdal, then Geodon---none with good effects. Our 9-year-old son has autism. He is currently taking Paxil for Tourette symptoms and Risperdal for agressive behavior. We are wondering if anyone has used Abilify for autism in lieu of other anti- psychotics. Thanks! Guest guest
Betty, I loved the way Abilify put Karac to sleep at night, but it didn't have the same effect on him in the morning. These kids react so differently to these drugs. I didn't know you were giving the Abilify to too. What made you decide to do that? Guest guest
just started the Abilify. We decided to try it on him because the Depakote seems to have quit working. He has been very manic lately. Very much like when we first put him on the Depakote. Well, he is sleeping again but not like when I gave it to him in the a.m. Perhaps we should have started him at 5 mg but the doctor only had samples for the 15 mg. and she did not want it to cost us anymore right now. As it was I had to pay for two visits for since we missed one the after Memorial Day and 's co-pay doubled. She said it would probably take about 2 weeks to be effective. if that is so, it sure did not take any time for these side effects to show up. That is if that is what is wrong. He does not seem to be having problems with his asthma. That will cause him to sleep a lot also. Guest guest
had both the 10mg. Abilify and the 15mg sample that the doctor gave her. I split the 10 mg and just gave Karac the 5mg. at night. The 5mg's was enough to put him to sleep fast. Isn't Evan on the 5mg's? Does it effect him differently from ? Karac had another brief meltdown this afternoon. I guess the day was just too much for him. LOL, Pat K
Guest guest
Evan is up to 10 mg for the last couple of months. I think they make him more alert while seems to want to sleep on the 7.5 mg that he is on. I hope that Karac's meltdown was not too severe. We always seem to have one or the other having at least a minor meltdown around here. I got back from lunch today with my mom and was having one because of 's behavior. Guest guest
I'm glad the Abilify is working well for Evan. Karac's meltdown was shortlived, but I wish there was some way to eliminate them all together. I had hoped we could find a medication that would do that. As Karac gets bigger, they freighten me. Did the Risperdal eliminate Evan's? How many mg's did it take to help him? Is he still drooling? Pat K
Guest guest
I rarely give Evan the Risperdal now and he seems to be rarely drooling either. He only gets it at school where he takes 1.5 mg in the late morning. At home I only give it to him if he starts screaming for no reason. There are some on the bipolar list that just give their child the Risperdal when they are having a meltdown. Guest guest
That is great that Evan is not drooling as much. Yes, I know some who just use the Risperdal as needed; that is what I wanted to do with the Zydis, but daughter-in-law didn't want to do that. Karac has felt bad off and on all day. I am at a loss. Nothing that the hospital has put him on has helped. One positive thing; I like the new therapist that I just hired sight unseen. Are you happy with Evan's school situation? Guest guest
Karac has been in the public school for 6 years and gotten one year of education. That was when he was in the third grade and had a really good teacher and a great aide. My daughter-in-law, , is hoping to change him next year to the school where he is going to summer school. There is a man teacher there that she really likes. Karac responds well to men. I hope it works out. Pat K
Guest guest
Are we ever happy with the school situation? I think it could be better but I do not see it getting better where we are. Evan does have the best autism teachers that we have. It is just that there are not enough of them and the classes are too full. With the numbers going up and the school's finances going down it is not going to be getting better any time soon. Guest guest
Hi Bill-I have a friend who has her son on abilify. He is 23 years old and has autism also. Abilify is one of the newer SSRIs and so far her son has had no ill side effects from it. He has been taking it for about a year now and is doing well. Hope this helps you. Gayle Abilify? Guest guest
Hi, yes, and we also tried Risperdal. Both resulted in tremendous weight gain, blood pressure increases, and despite an initial decrease in agressive behaviors, they ultimately came back after a couple of months. Note the description of the " eight week " trial (ridiculous--shows nothing on the long term) for the drug. You'll also need blood tests to check levels and side effects. Some nice behavior changes initially noted but behavioral therapy still key, and health effects are pretty nasty. Not good for long term therapy in my book. Guest guest
It amazes me that the CDC will approve any dangerous psyco drugs due to the psychiatrists weight and history in pre-epidemic autism research but refuse to even weigh the evidence on biological markers. Relatively safe and effective treatments are buried while stuff like this gets recommended. > > Anyone o this list know anything about tis. Guest guest
Isn't that amazing? I know a psychologist that told me to be careful with vitamins but the same place that he works at prescribed my son Risperdal. My son started developing tics and gained 20 lbs in 2 months. Please keep in mind that he was only 60 lbs when he started. I do not believe that the CDC (or the NIH) is evil and I do not believe there is some wild conspiracy to hurt out kids and its citizens but it is obvious they are inept and we really should urge our elected officials to make some changes. Guest guest
I spoke to my friend whose son is using abilify along with an ssri and he hasn't had any adverse effects so far. Her doctor is using it only on a short term basis to control some severely aggressive behavior he was having. Abilify has reduced this negative behavior, which was presenting a major problem at home. The behavior is now under control and it will be phased out shortly. Gayle Re: Abilify?
