Guest guest
After only one month my advice is to stop everything immediately. Run from your Wiley "doctor" as fast as you can. Someone with your history should never have been placed on that protocol. Go back to your endocrinologist, say you regret you went against their medical advice and ask for help. If they won't help you find another endocrinologist, even if you have to travel to get there. Find someone with an interest in women's issues. Chris Dear all, I have just subscribed to the group after finding out about the potential problems of the WP protocol. Alas, too late for me, as I took the full recommended doses of hormones for a full month. I have hypopituitarism and was on thyroid and adrenal replacement (physiological doses). I was looking for a gentle way to replace my sexual hormones and found WP, which came highly recommended. The first two weeks on estrogen went really well. I obviously am in sore need of hormones due to my condition and the estrogen made me feel calm and grounded. However, the 2 weeks on progesterone sent me into an adrenal crisis which nearly landed me in ER. I had to take large doses of corticoids to survive and, nearly two weeks later, I'm still trying to reduce the corticoids and finding it very difficult. My face is swollen, I have severe hypoglucemias, swollen red legs, edema, digestive trouble, vision issues and, in general, I'm feeling very depressed and cheated about the whole thing. My WP doctor, of course, wants me to continue, but I cannot do this after having gone through this crisis and feeling still so poorly. I know you're not supposed to give medical advice, but do you think a month on this protocol is difficult to reverse? I would like to stop it for good and then reconsider my options, but is it dangerous to just stop it cold turkey? I am now on the second day of my second WP cycle and have not stopped applying the estrogen in case it helps with the excess progesterone. Does anyone have any advice? I am in Spain and don't know any doctors around here to turn to. My endocrinologist got really angry at me that I decided to try WP and wants nothing to do with it. Should I continue the estrogen for a while and taper it off? When is the best part of the cycle to stop this protocol? Thank you very much in advance for any insights. Guest guest
I agree...stop. The large doses of the wp (specifically the progesterone) can absolutely affect whatever precarious adrenal status your hypo-pituitarism allows you. It is another " stressor " , and that is something we (I am also hypo-pituitary) absolutely do not need. I am also without my uterus/ovaries...what I found worked well, at least for " me " , was to dose sex hormones via my symptoms - what my body told me it needed. That was the " gentle way " I addressed my own missing sex hormones. As far as adding estrogen to oppose the overdosed progesterone, I don't know, but others will. It does sound like a wise idea, altho perhaps not in the overdose amount recommended in the wp. Sam (59yr old great granny) ===== > After only one month my advice is to stop everything immediately. Guest guest
Yes..DEFINATELY stay away from the protocol. I also did fine on the WP's "E"..UNTIL I started the progesterone..holy hell for me. Now, I use a high dose of "E" cream, and oral progesterone for 10 days a month and feel very good. I use Prometrium(oral bio-identical progesterone). Everybody's body is so different, what works for one, might be bad for another. In your case with your other endocrine problems..well, let's just say you should not have been on WP's protocol, or doses. Use the "E", and gradually taper line by line down. I would still feel that you could benefit from "E", but you also might need other major-hormone replacement too..it's ALL about balance! You don't replace what you don't need. Hope your previous Endo will help you!!!!Hugs,Terri To: rhythmicliving Sent: Tuesday, November 22, 2011 3:42 PM Subject: Re: New to the group - Serious side effects after a month on WP I agree...stop. Guest guest
Dear , You aren't too deep into the pit, but I believe you need to get back to your endo ASAP. With good reason the endo is angry that you ignored his/her concerns about something which is simply crazy and DOES NOT have any science or reputable medical credentials, but has caught the eye of bioethics reporters.Who put you on corticoids? The symptoms you describe are also common with lots of corticoids. The dosing of the WP is so beyond anything any scientist will ever EVER study. If you want to do sex hormone replacement start with ultra low dose and work with the endo who knows your history. It's a good sign that the endo is hardline about the WP dosing. Guest guest
I wanted to thank everybody who responded to my message. After reading your views, I will definitely go back to my endocrinologist and ask him for help. I do want to get on some sort of hormone replacement therapy, but with ultra low doses so that my body doesn't get the shock I just had. The problem in Spain is that most endos just do not believe in BHR. I'm sure I'll be offered synthetic oral contraceptives or the like and will have to start looking elsewhere for advice again. I am on corticoids, because I already was on adrenal replacement before I tried the WP, although on a very low dose, which I had to increase to get through the crisis brought on by the P phase of the cycle. I hope this group keeps helping other people stay away from this risky protocol. Sadly, I think most people find out the hard way after trying it out and failing. Thank you very much again to everybody who's helped get the word out! Best,
