Sadie,My doctor has me on compounded progesterone vaginal suppositories in olive oil.Now that I'm not so sensitive to progesterone it's working great. It doesn't get released through your organs either.Blessings,ShereeTo: rhythmicliving Sent: Sun, February 12, 2012 10:50:52

AMSubject: Progesterone options

Hello rhythmicliving folks,

I am interested to know what options are available for bioidentical progesterone, other than progesterone cream or prometrium. I presently cycle with prometrium - 200 mg/day for 14 days - but don't really like how my body reacts - so would like to try something different. I prefer the prometrium to progesterone cream but wanted to know if there are other options besides cream or prometrium.

Many thanks for your help.

Sadie

Wow Sheree,

Thank you so much for explaining all those different terms in such a helpful and

" easy-to-understand " way . . . it totally makes sense to me now :-)

I think I shall ask my doctor to prescribe vaginal progesterone as I don't like

the idea of prometrium passing through the liver . . . though I am somewhat

undecided having read that the suppositories are quite messy, do not come with

an applicator, result in a lot of leakage and can cause yeast infections. Is

this your experience as well?

I can only tolerate taking prometrium every third or fourth month . . . it

sounds like you use the vaginal progesterone every month (for days 15-28) . . .

is that correct? Also, do you sometimes start to bleed before completing the

second half of your cycle? And if so, do you stop the progesterone as soon as

the bleed begins? This sometimes happens to me and I am not certain whether to

stop the prometrium or continue for the full 14 days. What are your thoughts?

(My doctor isn't familiar with cyclng or static dosing and instead prescribes a

continual dosage every day of the month/year . . . though I don't use it that

way.)

I found it interesting/fascinating to learn from your message that the estradiol

hormones build on top of each dose, thereby naturally increasing levels. Do the

levels also naturally " decrease " during a bleed? If not, I would think the

buildup would be significant and concerning.

What do you take for estradiol? I used to use estrogel, though now use

estradot.

Thanks again Sheree for all your patience and willingness to share your

knowledge/experience/wisdom.

Sadie, Right now I am using (3) .1mg Vivelle-Dot patches 2x a week and (1) 0.125mg estradiol compounded sublingual troche morning and night. I am using a compounded 5mg progesterone suppository in olive oil 2x daily days 18-28. The suppositories are not messy - they are a powdered mix in a gelatin capsule. I'm pretty sure they can also be taken orally. So far I haven't had any problems with them other than I still don't like progesterone very much because of where I am in my healing journey. Given a choice I would rather not use anything vaginally, but so far there isn't a better solution. I usually don't start my menstrual cycle until after I stop the progesterone. Sometimes I

might start spotting early but I always complete the full dose of the progesterone. The whole concept of a bleed is to reduce the estradiol buildup of the uterus lining. In July my uterine lining was 10. I go in today for another ultra sound to see if it is coming down. I'm don't know yet if I have been bleeding enough to reduce it down to 3. My doctor and I want to avoid a D & C and I can handle only a smallamount of progesterone each month because I have a build up of progesterone in my tissues because of the Wiley progesterone cream that keep coming out at various times.I'm still working towards getting my hormones balanced after getting off the Wiley Protocol so I'm not sure what will end up being my "normal" dosage. Hopes this helpsBlessings,ShereeTo: rhythmicliving Sent: Mon, February 20, 2012 12:07:03 PMSubject: Re: Progesterone options

Sheree,

Would you mind clarifying your dosage? Are you on 3 of the .1 patches all taken

at the same time, 2 x per week so that you are taking .3 each time?

I am in the process of trying to work out dosages with my doc.

Thanks, Deb in MI

Hello Sheree,

Thanks again for sharing your experiences. I am so grateful for this group in

so many ways. I was very close to jumping on board the Wiley protocol . . . but

thankfully discovered the rhythmic living group just in time.

I am relieved to learn that the progesterone suppository you use is not messy .

.. . does it come with an applicator?

Your estrogen dosage (in total) sounds similar to mine. I use a .78 mg estradot

patch and .5 mg estriol vaginal cream twice a week. I am still wondering if our

estradiol hormones naturally decrease in the second half of the menstrual cycle

.. . . similar to how Dr. Schwarbein describes they mimic a women's cycle - ie,

by building on top of each dose. Do you know if that is the case?

I hope your doctor's appointment went well and that your uterine lining has come

down. Based only on my symptoms, I often feel that I have developed a

progesterone buildup just from taking prometrium (200 mg for 14 days) . . . so

can only imagine how challenging a journey it has been for you given the large

doses prescribed in the Wiley protocol.

sending you warm wishes and much success in your journey towards hormonal

balance.

Sadie,My progesterone suppository doesn't come with an applicator. It is encased in a gelatin casing and you just insert it yourself as far as you can push it. I don't think the estrogen naturally decreases it the second half of the month. I think it keeps increasing until you take progesteroneto release it. If a woman doesn't have a uterus than they don't need to worry about sloughing off a lining. However, how much estrogen a women would need without a uterus and how one would determine that I don't know. My estradiol dosage right now is higher than most women she treats but I think it's because of the progesterone buildup. Laurel, in her past posts, talks about having to take high

dosesof estradiol to squash the progesterone release. Now that she has cleared the progesterone out of her tissues, I think she is on a steady lowdose of estradiol without progesterone. I also think she said she sometimes had a bleed but I'm not sure. You would have to go back in the archives. Thanks for asking about my doctor's appointment. The results were great. My lining has reduced from 12 to 6. I have a phone appointmentwith Dr. Schwarzbein on Tuesday. I'll get the results of my new blood test then and find out the next step.I also appreciate this group and the support of other women. It's been such a blessings'Sincerely,Sheree MichelsTo: rhythmicliving Sent: Wed, February 22, 2012 9:41:35 PMSubject: Re: Progesterone options

Deb,Yes, right now I am on .3mg of patches 2x a week. I am also taking an estradiol troche 0.125mg 2x a day (.250 a day). I am on an unusuallyhigh dosage for a women that hasn't had to withdraw from the Wiley Protocol. I am still releasing a lot progesterone out of my tissues whichkeeps affecting my estradiol levels. I wouldn't recommend my dosage to anyone without professional help. As I said before my doctor isDr. Schwarzbein in Santa Barbara.Hope this helps,Blessings, ShereeTo: rhythmicliving Sent: Wed, February 22, 2012 4:30:35 PMSubject: Re: Progesterone options

I am prone to yeast infections when the P in my body is too high and the E is

too low. Now that I'm not overwhelmed by P I completely forgot about them.

Wow! Sheree! Great reduction in your lining. Congrats! What a trip you've been on with this. Your posts are a wonderful read for women trying to find a way off the WP. Mom bought Dr. Schwarbein's DVD (haven't seen it yet) and had the book sent to my house so I've started looking at it. Looks really excellent so far. Seems like a wonderful source for one's HRT library. Oh yes, when the P was bad there were days when I used about 64 mg of that WP E cream!!! Others on the RL group went through similar days. Meanwhile the WP camp were saying we were simply crazy or screwing our E reception, blah blah blah, but when I'd talk to Bent Formby he'd urge me to protect my organs with E. The big concern in his mind was the P overwhelming the organs and we figured out that when a surge was coming out of the tissues that if we used enough E then we could slam down the P. I remember talking to Dr. Swarzbein back then and I was thrilled that she too understood the surging/leaking from the tissues P problem. I'm so damn happy to be on 1mg a day of E get (which is still too high, no?) and never experience surges or hot flashes or whatever like I did on the WP and during the awful time getting off of it. Now, when I miss a dose of E I don't even notice it. I'd like to do patches, but they are still too hard on my skin and fall off. Eager to hear the latest after your next call. LaurelSadie,My progesterone suppository doesn't come with an applicator. It is encased in a gelatin casing and you just insert it yourself as far as you can push it. I have a phone appointmentwith Dr. Schwarzbein on Tuesday. I'll get the results of my new blood test then and find out the next step.I also appreciate this group and the support of other women. It's been such a blessings'Sincerely,Sheree MichelsTo: rhythmicliving Sent: Wed, February 22, 2012 9:41:35 PMSubject: Re: Progesterone optionsHello Sheree,Thanks again for sharing your experiences. I am so grateful for this group in so many ways. I was very close to jumping on board the Wiley protocol . . . but thankfully discovered the rhythmic living group just in time.I am relieved to learn that the progesterone suppository you use is not messy . . . does it come with an applicator?Your estrogen dosage (in total) sounds similar to mine. I use a .78 mg estradot patch and .5 mg estriol vaginal cream twice a week. I am still wondering if our estradiol hormones naturally decrease in the second half of the menstrual cycle . . . similar to how Dr. Schwarbein describes they mimic a women's cycle - ie, by building on top of each dose. Do you know if that is the case? I hope your doctor's appointment went well and that your uterine lining has come down. Based only on my symptoms, I often feel that I have developed a progesterone buildup just from taking prometrium (200 mg for 14 days) . . . so can only imagine how challenging a journey it has been for you given the large doses prescribed in the Wiley protocol. sending you warm wishes and much success in your journey towards hormonal balance.Sadie> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Sadie,> > > > > My doctor has me on compounded progesterone vaginal suppositories in > >olive > >> > > > > >oil.> > > > > Now that I'm not so sensitive to progesterone it's working great. Sheree,

I never did Wiley but am having issues getting my hormones adjusted. I had been

on hydrocortisone for weak adrenals and when I came off of it, my sex hormones

went high, especially E, I am guessing. I had the cycle that Dr. S says you

want. Then, I listened to Dr. S's Menopause Power program and was convinced

enough to switch to cycling instead of the static dosing I had been doing

because of insulin resistance.

So I switched on my own and now am trying to work out how to dose this for me.

My doc is helpful, but I don't believe she has others doing this.

Consequently, I was getting horrible low E symptoms on .1 + .025 every other

day. Thanks to your post, my doc was willing to up my vivelle to 2 of (.1)

every other day, so I will see if that helps. I am also switching my P but

couldn't get the Crinone that Dr. S recommends.

I guess the good thing is that I am becoming conversant in what are low E

symptoms. I also haven't had the cycle Dr. S says you want as either my E was

too low or my P was too low.

What I can't figure out is why low E bothers me so much and doesn't seem to

affect many friends my own age (55).

Thanks for your help, and I will probably be asking more questions.

Hi Laurel,

Thanks for sharing your observation re. yeast infections occurring during times

of high progesterone intake. Progesterone seems to lead to so many problems.
