Guest guest
My 2 cents: We actually tried something similar to what suggests, and I bet it would work with 95% of kids. My son, unfortunately, had a REALLY overactive gag reflex, so as much as he wanted to take pills " like a big kid, " he just couldn't help but gag on them. We tried all the various tricks and devices (spent a lot of money on a special pill-swallowing cup, etc.), but nothing worked. Eventually I found that if I crushed the pills and " sandwiched " them in non-dairy ice cream (The key is NOT to mix it in; if you put ALL all the powder in one central spot and then *surround* the powder with the ice cream it ensures that the child will get all -- or nearly all -- of the medication), he would take it easily. Probably because the frozen dessert hides the taste by numbing the tongue. Also, it taught my son how to let things slide down his throat. Doing it that way is a major pain in the butt, however. We finally came upon a solution that was originally suggested by Marcia Hinds: Instead of crushing the pills, we started cutting them into little pieces and spooning them to in the non-dairy ice cream, followed by a little water. We told him what we were doing and why, and each day the pill pieces got bigger, until eventually (within a week!) he was PROUDLY taking whole pills without the ice cream -- " just like a grown-up " (his words). Now he can actually swallow two pills at a time, and given the number of meds he has to take at a sitting, this is a very good thing. It sure has made life easier for me! HTH, and good luck! Guest guest
We actually take the pills and put them in the applesauce and don¹t crush them. This is how my son swallows pills and has been for quite some time. We use the same technique making sure the pill is surrounded by the applesauce and it works like a charm for him. Guest guest
That is a great way to learn pill swallowing. I didn't have to teach to swallow pills. He just did it because he couldn't stand any liquid med. Elijah and Noah learned using the Oraflo pill cup. Kids are all different. That's why it's great to hear many ideas when it comes to teaching them a new skill. Robyn ________________________________ From: " donnaaron@... Guest guest
My son-6- also got tired of the taste of liquids and wanted pills At some point the volume of liquid was so much that he threw up afterwards and that was it-pills ever since. My 4 year old NT daughter however puts water in her mouth and drops the pill in and lays down on her back so the pill floats to the back of her throat and swallows.
