Pamela, did a palliative care fellowship and is now running a palliative care program, and last I heard, very happy.

Yes! That was Guinn in New Mexico and I believe most doctors experienced

empathy burnout around 10-12 patients. After that we just start tuning out.

BTW - I don't see her on the IMP map. I hope she didn't burnout . . .

Gordon, this also reminds me of the 20% increase in polyps detected

during colonoscopies BEFORE 11:00 am.

Steve, I beg to differ. I see 12-15 patients/day and, though I do not come close to what the “average” FP supposedly makes, I am still making well over $100,000/year. It can be done. I do agree, though, that it is not just the patients, but the third party rules which leads to burnout. The added layer(s) of complexity makes the whole process more draining. This goes to a message I am continually trying to push forward to the AAFP and others—if FPs are considered the cornerstone of a high quality affordable health care system, then shouldn’t we be doing everything in our power to keep those who are practicing practicing and entice the new generation of med students to choose primary care? This can only be done by changing the way we get paid so that our relationship with our patients is strengthened. Adding more administrative trivia, more top down regulations, or even continuing with the status quo will not suffice. We need to keep the worker bees happy or the future will not be very pretty. But you won't ever survive as a viable business within today's healthcare payment system. Stevestown. > > > > > > > > > Duh! Agreed. From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of drhorvitzSent: Saturday, August 25, 2012 11:24 AMTo: Subject: Re: doctor burn out I mis wrote my previous post.I have no burnout from patients. I enjoy my interaction with them.I had approached burnout with third parties.I removed them.I do what I believe to be best for each patient and have no third party whispering in my ear or threatening me.My point is that an IMP should never get burned out, unless the IMP is restricted from doing what they want, which is usually by the third party.I went into FP so I could control my own destiny. I believe that is shared by many on this list. If FP's can regain control of the system, we would have an overflow, as opposed to a fake shortage.Stevestown.> > > > > > > > > > > > Duh! I thought the burn out is from the insurance companies and the compassion fatigue is from the patients? To: Sent: Saturday, August 25, 2012 11:22
