Hi,

My son says he needs to go to the doctor because his ankle keeps giving out to

the side every day.  I saw it happen today and he was just walking thru the yard

and twisted his ankle and fell.  Then he said his foot hurts deep inside too.

My husband rubbed in the arch of his foot and he flinched when he hit a certain

spot from the pain.

I wonder if he bruised his arch or is having some kind of tendonitis or

something?

Thanks,

Any swelling? Has he been on any antibiotics recently? My mom ruptured her

tendon after taking Cipro. Apparently, this can happen in about 1% of the

population.

Yes it can make the tendons hypoxic.

Hey Robyn,

I didn't see swelling yet.

MY husband had severe tendon spasms from Cipro too.  I refused to let him

finish the course because I had heard about them rupturing.  It took a while

for the pain ot ease up.

He took Cefzil a couple of weeks ago - not sure.

Thanks,

I don¹t know the diagnosis, but have some ideas. So I¹ll ramble for a

little bit.

I had the weirdest experience once. I was up late working on a project on

the floor. I was sitting on my foot. I sat that way for hours (I was quite

comfortable). When I got up, I had stretched something in my foot to the

point where I couldn¹t flex it to pick it up when I walked. It was so

bizarre. I had no pain, but NO ability to flex my foot. It took a couple

of weeks to get the strength back. If I hadn¹t known exactly what I had

done, I think I would have feared a stroke!

I ended up wearing some boots that held my foot at a right angle so I could

walk (otherwise my foot just dragged and twisted out from under me).

After a few days, it occurred to me that I could splint it in my sleep by

jamming my foot down inside a pillowcase (so that my ankle was supported at

a right angle... with my heel in the corner of the pillowcase). I stuffed a

pillow into the case front of my leg (inside of the pillowcase) to hold it

in place. My ankle really didn¹t get any better until I started doing this.

The first morning after I did it there was a marked improvement.

So, my point is, if your son has pulled or torn something, he may benefit

from some sort of support for a while while he rebuilds the strength in his

ankle.

I know there are splints, exercises, tape methods, etc. A sports therapist

would probably have great ideas. I walked into the clinic last year with my

runner son and they almost fixed him up on the spot with a little electronic

stimulation. They really know their stuff.

I found the below link about taping (I was gymnast in high school and ended

up having my ankle taped like this every practice because I kept turning my

ankle... it provided great support. I remember beginning to twist my ankle

and feeling the tape catch me and save me from injuring it again).

& cdn=health & tm=11 & f=20 & tt=14 & bt=1 & bts=1 & zu=http%3A//www.emedicine.com/sports

/topic143.htm

I guess he should probably have it examined. Then you can figure out what

to do to help him prevent injuring it more.

And there¹s always Ibuprofin if he is having inflammation.

Hang in there. Isn¹t it always something?

Can¹t we just have dull day every once in a while?

Hugs,

Caroline G.

little boys will be boys and we have had a broken arm (bunk bed) sprained ankle

(tree climbing), Regular bouts with scraps and bruises (bike riding and playing

ball).

It probably has nothing to do with Autism, take him to a pediatric Orthopedic

doc and get an Xray!

Truly - it is great to see him taking bumps and spills.  He's the CFIDS kid,

and I'm so grateful to see him running (a little) and playing, and not being so

quick to cry over a bump and bruise.  He has really toughened up.   Right

now he's just falling for no obvious reason - but that can be a CFIDS thing I

think, from my experience.

I don't think he actually sprained anything ... I'm assuming it's growing pains

and maybe there's something like tendons being loose right before a growth

spurt? (does that happen?) - but just don't want to ignore it if it's been

happening so often that he would tell me it keeps giving out on him every day

when he's just walking.   Last time I ignored his complaint and made him walk

when he said his hip was hurting, it turned out he had synovitis.   But

really, I went thru some spells where just walking was dangerous for me too, and

it passed.

I'll pop in to the doc-in-the-box if it keeps on...

Thanks:)

Hey, yeah.  Advil! My instinct says there's just some inflammation.  Of

course a foot can keep getting irritated.  It was just a new complaint that I

had sort of noticed but didn't pay attention, so I sat down and posted a note.

I don't think it's bad or anything, but worth watching.

You are SO right about sports medicine docs.  I got more relief from my chronic

pain w/fibromyalgia and just CFS in general by going to a spectacular sports med

doc here.  His physician's assistant is a physiatrist, a little known field I

think, and is truly the magician.  I finally know that I don't have to live

with pain anymore.

Anyone who has chronic pain, even though Fibromyalgia and CFS pain are due to

the immune system, should at least check out a sports med doc or a DO - even

better if you can find a physiatrist too.  And Toradol shots ... wow.

Thanks,

I don't believe that is a side effect of a cephalosporin antibiotic. Advil for

the inflammation is a good idea and then you could monitor him to see if it

improves. If no, then you could opt for the xray.

All the best,

Robyn
