I have received a first time ever request.  Patient apparently went to a hearing center I didn’t even know existed from a coupon or ad in the paper.  She was apparently complaining of hearing loss in 1 ear.

I get this letter saying she qualifies for bilateral hearing amplication and please fill out this form and add your stamp (what stamp, why do people think doctors have some magic stamp) and indicate she is “medically cleared” for hearing aids.

What is medical clearance for hearing aids?  I know how to make sure a patient is medically stable for surgery but I have no idea what the medical indications for someone being able to or not able to use hearing aids.

And they didn’t send me the results.  She is Medicaid HMO patient.  And I know nothing about her having hearing loss.

at my former job, which was at an FQHC clinic for adults 60+, we had to refer the hearing loss patients to ENT for the medical clearance. Not sure why, since we always took a look and first removed any ear wax, but that was how it was done.

Usually we were the ones to get the complaint of hearing loss from the patient (or perhaps notice that they couldn't hear much during the visit). We'd then refer to audiology, and if they confirmed loss and recommended hearing aids, we referred to ENT, and then the ENT report went to audiology, and audiology ordered hearing aids.

And the stamp is anything that has your name on it, as long as it has your MD or DO (or whatever your degree may be). I use our address stamp, which has the name of our business, Steve's name, and our address.  This is the dumbest rule of anything because anyone can order a stamp from Staples.
