Guest guest
Hi Heidi, ( Hcf67@... ) Effexor has been discussed often on this list - mostly by the parents taking it!! My middle daughter, now 15, was on Effexor - dosage ranging from 150mg - 300mg when she was 13-14. It was the last medication she took before stopping all meds and continuing with cbt. Now she manages on her own, without intervention. My husband with ocd and depression takes a combination of Effexor and Zoloft. Side effects of Effexor are usually fatigue in the beginning, then a sense of energy. Dry mouth may be an issue, some have weight gain, some weight loss, but compared with other anti-depresants, Effexor is pretty easy to take. Hope this helps... wendy in canada =============================================================== Hello, Does any parent have a child who is taken Effexor or has taken Effexor? Please post. Guest guest
Hi Heidi, I am taking Effexor, do you have a specific question? I was on Paxil, but I had gained 14lbs. and I wanted to try something else and this was recommended. Let me know what you are experiencing. Guest guest
Liz, Most of the side-effects you and others describe are known about Effexor. You should have been provided some information about it by your doctor or pharmacist. There is usually a small descriptive pamphlet in the sample boxes a doctor may hand out. My medications always come with a printed sheet about possible side effects when I pick them up at my pharmacist. Many antidepressants, as well as other medications, will affect your sexual desire and your ability to experience satisfaction. It's a trade-off. Since Effexor is quickly eliminated from the body, it is often reccommended that if you know you and your spouse/partner have a special weekend or date planned that you stop taking the medication two days or so before. Then after the special time together, go back on the medication as prescribed. Unless you are taking other medications that cause similar problems and cannot be stopped temporarily this should work. Otherwise talk with your doctor about the problem and see what he or she has to suggest. Ray Neal
Guest guest
<<the next morning after I started it.. like 8 hours later! 8 hours!!! My sex drive was totally gone.. I mean totally!!!!!!!!!!>> <<I never did go back on it........and I never went back to my dr. They should KNOW stuff like that!>> Hi Liz, My sex drive is also gone. A LOT of meds have this effect, like the Methadone I'm on. I could care less about it, because I feel my health is MUCH more important (being able to live day-to-day and to be able to do things) than sex...I always have. And, I thank my lucky stars that my husband totally understands. When you pick up your meds, your pharmacy is supposed to supply you with the side effects, dosages, etc. about your med. If they don't, I believe they are breaking the law. When my pharmacy kept giving me the same paper about my meds over and over, I asked why, because I already knew about it. They told me that it was the law and they could be in trouble if they didn't. And, one of the side effects of Effexor IS decrease in sex. Doctors do know the side effects, etc. about a med they are prescribing (or they SHOULD), but a lot of doctors don't have the time to tell you everything, unless you ask, so you should get the info from your pharmacy. Good luck! Dawn
Guest guest
Ray, I never did take it again and I won't. I am on celexa now. It has caused some sexual side effects but not nearly to the degree that effexor did. At this point though I think my meds need to be changed or the dosage tweaked again because depression is more of a problem and flat affect as well. Guest guest
Hi Nil: I have taken Effexor XR for 2 years now or so. I have sleep problems anyway and take Restoril. I will say that when I recently had to go up to 150 mg of E XR I also had to go up in the Restoril but the E XR has greatly reduced the depression and diminished my pain by at least 50%. Hope this helps...Blessings, JJ effexor Hi, " Central activation - reduced levels of dopamine and serotonin can lead to sleep disturbance, low pain threshold, loss of motivation and depressed mood. Guest guest
Hi All, I have tried small doses of Effexor XR for a couple of weeks and I seem to be feeling worse so I am discontinuing it and will probably try some other antidepressant after my system hopefully " normalizes " . I felt spaced out and a bit nutzy. Mike
Guest guest
I was on effexor for almost a year, about five or six years ago. I was having a lot of chest pains then, and couldn't figure out why, then finally realized the effexor was causing the chest pains. It is known to raise blood pressure, but mine was never above normal, and generally far below normal, so I can't figure out what the chest pains were about, but I stopped effexor and they went away. Until then, it helped marginally with sleep and other things. Guest guest
my doc told me to expect to get sicker before getting better so I'm putting up with the side effects which ARE NO FUN. I think they will all go away after a while and leave just the benificial effects of the meds. -- Re: effexor Hi All, I have tried small doses of Effexor XR for a couple of weeks and I seem to be feeling worse so I am discontinuing it and will probably try some other antidepressant after my system hopefully " normalizes " . Guest guest
I HATED Effxor! It gave me the worst insomnia I've ever had, HUGE pupils (I looked high all the time), and worst of all, it destroyed by appetite. I literally COULD NOT eat more than a couple of bites a day without wanting to throw up. I got down to 88 pounds, and I'm 5'8 " . Withdrawl was hell, too. I could not get up or stop crying, and I STILL couldn't eat. > WOW, I had no idea that Effexor was that bad, I was only on it for > about a month. The drug was way too much for my body to handle. Guest guest
Doctor, I apologize for not being clear... the reduciton would be in addition to the Inspra. The idea would be to reduce systemic neuroepinephrine by eliminating the Effexor. My concern would be that it would also reduce peripheral dopamine, thereby increasing aldo release and raising BP. I guess I would also wonder about your experience with Effexor and BP. Would such a low dose cause BP increases? Thanks, Mike > Stick with the Spiro > > > > Clarence E. Guest guest
Rarely use it. Look in PDR For BP effects. Why are you taking it. Guest guest
Yeah, I noticed but we don't want to be bullies here. I know we all have good reasons to be wary/terrified of SSRIs but for the record, I do believe that there are biochemical imbalances in the brain in severly depressed people but the reality is that these drugs have side effects that are not highlighted on the box! Effexor may actually 'work' for some people but I want the reality of the side effects highlighted and known about too; the most important of which may be messing up the brain's chemical making ability MORE once you come off them; not to mention the vaso constriction in the brain, personality changes.......etc. For the member who left i just want to say that i can relate to how good it can feel to feel 'normal' after such a long time of misery. We're just trying to help people be more informed about the reality of these 'wonder' drugs.
