Guest guest
Hi Sue, Many of us on the list have had SPECT Scans of the brain. This test shows the perfusion (circulation) patterns of the brain after being injected with an inert radioactive dye. Lyme disease can cause inflammation of the bloodvessels, which can restrict the normal flow of blood to the brain. There are other diseases that can cause this, but a positive SPECT scan is a useful tool for diagnosing LD in conjunction with clinical symptoms. However, not everyone with LD has a positive SPECT. The best place to go for this test is Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC. Take Care, Joan LI NY

Its going to depend on the exact machine, but basically, yes you will be lying still in a closed area, like an MRI. I think it will be a lot quieter, though. You are injected with a radioactive isotope (99m-Tc, as part of a more complex 'dye') I had no reaction to this, and believe that most people don't, but you might. If you have had a reaction to any other contrast agent, ask the radiologist about using this one. I know of no reason that you couldn't drive after this procedure (if you could before, of course) unless you did have some kind of unusual reaction to the dye. Guest guest
I had a SPECT scan and I don't know...the did it three times bc they didn't like the results. The doc/tech said that I must have been moving (you have to keep very still, not a confined space per se). The third time, they watched me the entire time to make sure I was not moving and got the same results. I left thinking it was just another CFS problem or something that they had never seen before. I had this done about a year and a half ago at Temple U in Phila/ USA. Anyone else have problems like this? *If * I need another I'll go to Shungu. .. Guest guest
Hi Jerry I was reading your email about the MRS procedure performed at Columbia by Dr. Shungu. I had recently spoke with him and he had mention in my conversation with him that there was no injections of radioactive isotope or anything else of that kind. Could you tell me if this correct or not. Thanks Jill
Guest guest
Jill,I have had three SPECT scans done. All were done in the Dept of Nuclear Medecine and all involved the IV injection of a radioactive substance and scanning immediately and again after 2 hours. Maybe your doctor is referring to some other kind of scan? Guest guest
My friend had to undergo this one ,too...with a substance that made him worse. He said the substance has vasoconstrictive effect on the brain vessels so they could see which parts of the brain have poor blood flow. There is another scan called PET..but I do not know any details Stania ----- Puvodnà zpráva ----- Od: <johnu@...> Komu: <egroups> Odesláno: 18. prosince 2000 1:56 Predmet: Re: SPECT scan > Jill,I have had three SPECT scans done. Guest guest
Grace, I am pretty certain that there is SPECT in Indonesia. I will check for you. However, I know that there are at least two SPECT machines in Singapore. Also, there are several in Malaysia. Remember, SPECT is not a curative tool. It is only a diagnostic tool and mostly done in the USA with the hopes of using the image to get insurance reimbursement for the HBOT. Guest guest
Dear Ignacio and Matt, thanks for your response. I am really impressed by all your attention. Matt, I'm still waiting for any info from you. Ignacio, terima kasih ya... I have one question that really bothers me is that HERE (we live in Indonesia) it's so difficult to meet with the HBOT doctor who can handle the problem of a brain injured child. Mostly they are really expert in strokes, diabetes, but not in brain injured child. My daughter Rosita, 5 yo., was born blind (suspected for CMV and rubella), osteopetrosis (bone within bone), gastrointestinal problems and last (I hope it would really be her LAST problem) is OSAS (Obstructive Sleep Apnea). At her age, she weight 14 kgs and 90 cm tall. Up to now she has been hospitalized 5 times including 3x surgeries for VP Shunt, Reposition VP Shunt and Hernia). Not to mention 3x broken bones due to small accidents. Last April she has to be in ICU for 25 days for OSAS. Up to now when she slept, we have to put guedel on her mouth to prevent her from being unable to breathe. She has been in HBOT for 12 times (1 hour daily) at 1 1/2 ata. The problems lies at the mask that she uses. They don't have the small mask suitable for her (anyway if they do, since my daughter is still non-verbal and rather non-cooperative) it would not be easy to put the mask on her mouth/nose. So what she uses now is plastic mask that is usually used for breathing oxygen. Of course, it causes much leak of the oxygen. Sorry, in Indonesia we don't have the monochamber. Yesterday, the doctor suggested whether to raise the pressure to 2 ata. regarding the much leak in using the so-far oxygen mask. We are a bit confused since what we've learnt so far is that the suitable pressure for the nerve's recovery is at 1.5 to 1.75 atm. We're really desperate. On the other hand, we don't have the SPECT scan to observe the improvement. We really appreciate everybody's advice on this. Look forward to your input Sincerely, Grace Re: [ ] Spect Scan > Deart Grace, > I suspect that Singapura might be the place. There is at least one SPECT there, most probably at the National U. Guest guest
Dear Matt, some two years ago there was a meeting of the Advisory Group of the Member States of the RCA area, hosted by the Indonesian BATAN and the UN's IAEA, in Mataram, Lombok, Indonesia. www.batan.go.id/rca/lombok/final_report.pdf - SPECT instruments were mentioned in Indonesia, but apparently they are with operational problems. In Malaysia, none, at the date. Although Singapore did not mention it, I know there is, at least, one working unit at the NUH.. Another more SPECT- populated location is the ines. Let us know of your finds. Best regards. Ignacio Matt Palaszynski wrote: > Grace, I am pretty certain that there is SPECT in Indonesia. I will > check for you. Guest guest
Dear Grace, you are welcome. Your doctor is thinking just on terms of pressure and concentration, but not on biological effects. 1.2 ATA and 30% oxygen has been proved useful in certain cases of brain injury, in Russia while the usual in the rest of the world seems to be 1.5ATA/100%. 1.3 ATA and 24% oxygen has also been proved useful, so your daughter may be receiving enough for a beneficial effect, even with the inadequate mask. I would rather add antioxidants, instead of going up with pressure and/ or concentration. A suitable mask? Non-rebreathing mask with bag, three disk valves, child size. They are quite cheap in the US, and here, in Argentina. .....I think it can be arranged, if you can economically retrieve it from the local Post office/Customs. We would need an address. Best regards. Ignacio Ignacio Fojgel, M.D. Maimonides University Buenos Aires, Argentina Grace Pelawi wrote: > Dear Ignacio and Matt, thanks for your response. Guest guest
Dear Ignacio, I think your advice is quite reasonable. We personally think that the pressure should not be raised. So far, she stays at 1.5 ATA/100%. She also takes some antioxidants like C, E, Selenium, Melatonin, Magnesium (tends to behave autistic). About the mask, I was wondering whether the mask would be suitable for her size. Would it fit a 14 kgs., 90 cm tall girl? She is also quite not cooperative; has it ever used to a non cooperative child? At last, how much does it cost? Thank you for your response. Ever been to Indonesia? Guest guest
Grace, Ok, I finally got the information on SPECT in Indonesia, as I remembered, there are two SPECT machines in Indonesia. I am not sure if the centers would be qualified or willing to do brain SPECT but the centers are: 1.) Bandung Hosp, Pr Johan Masjhur (dual head DST) 2.) Cardiac center in Djakarta Cardiology Center / Harapan Kita In Singapore there are four machines and the first two should be able to help: 1.) Dr. Ho at the National University Hospital (Starcam, all exams) 2.) National Neuroscience Institute (GE SMV, all exams) 3.) Cardiac dpt at National University Hospital has a GE VG (Cardiology) 4.) Dr. Terrence Chua at Singapore General Hospital, Heart Center (Cardiology) Hope this information helps, Let me know if you run into any problems. Guest guest
Najwa, I can appreciate your concern over sedation. If I were to do it again having the Spect scan in a hospital is probably preferable to doing at his facility. Since the SPECT scan doesn't take that long to do she might very well do well with a mild sedative. I took my son to Ocean Hyperbaric for his first set of Oxygen treatments last September because I wanted to know that would be receive treatments from the best. I also really liked being able to take him into the clamshell monochambers. That was also most important for me. The round glass tubes don't really seem as good as the old clamshell style chambers that allow you some privacy and more room. Will you be going into the tank with your daughter? Guest guest
You know you don't have to do a SPECt scan if this is a concern for you. My daughter also started at Dr. Neubauer's clinic. A SPECT scan was resommended, but not required. We did schedule to have a SPECT scan done and were planning on sedating her, but when we got there the SPECT camera was broken. After 20 dives it was still broken, so we never had one done. It does help to document progress, but it is not mandatory. Good luck! Guest guest
Good Point, The radiologist had trouble injecting my son for his exit SPECT Scan and I was very close to calling it off. It is only optional yet does provide interesting information. At 07:51 PM 2/1/03 -0500, you wrote: >You know you don't have to do a SPECt scan if this is a concern for you. Guest guest
Thank you all for the information. I was told by Dr. Neubauer's clinic that the SPECT is required specifically due to the fact that my daughter has seizures. I was under the impression that the Dr. can recommend the number of dives and pressure by reviewing the initial SPECT result. Did you daughter show progress after using HBOT Ellen? How may dives did she do? In answer to your question , yes I am planning to go on the dive with . What is that experience like? Thanks for sending Katy's URL Darin. I pray for all of you that she continues to heal and make more progress. May God bless her. It was nice to hear from you Tammy. Thanks for sharing 's story. Best wishes Najwa > >You know you don't have to do a SPECt scan if this is a concern for you. My > >daughter also started at Dr. Neubauer's clinic. A SPECT scan was > >resommended, but not required. Guest guest
I found that I needed three dives to overcome a sense of claustrophobia that I didn't know that I had. I must say the 100% oxygen semed to create a type of dream state with alot of very vivid visual effects after about 30 minutes. I found that bonding with my son in the tank was very good. Avoid coffee, stay focused on the here and now in the tank, accept any discomfort and move slowly, your daughter will benefit greatly. Dr. Neubauer is a healer. I trust him and I no longer trust many doctors. Dave Snow At 02:23 AM 2/2/03 -0000, you wrote: >Thank you all for the information. Guest guest
My daughter has seizures too, and she had some in the chamber as well. When I got to Dr. Neubauer's clinic it was I who was upset the SPECT scan wasn't working, not them. This was 3 yrs ago, but Dr. Neubauer was reassurring that it would still be okay, just more difficult to document progress, as they had to rely on my impressions of her advancements. Hannah began to improve after the first dive. After about 10 dives I noticed that she was moving at a more normal pace, instead of the incredibly slow pace that was the norm. Ultimately, her seizures were reduced 50%. I did not get the total sz control I was hoping for, but I saw many improvements in many areas and some I had no even considered as potential areas of improvements. Dr. Neubauer is a very kind man. Sometimes I felt that the outer office was a bit too busy, but always knew that they were really taking good care of not only my child, but the other patients as well. In the area where the patients recieve HBOT, the technicians were all very vigilant of all the patients and handled things well when some had seizures. Since I went in with my daughter, I had the opportunity to observe many things. Good luck, Ellen [ ] Re: SPECT scan > Thank you all for the information. Guest guest
VERY PATIENT FRIENDLY, NO CLOSTRO. I HAD IT DONE A YEAR AGO AND WAS VERY RELIEVED HOW EASY IT WAS. THE ONLY THING I WOULD PREPARE YOU FOR IS IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO GET THE IMAGE 45 MIN TO 1 HR. > > > Can anyone tell me how patient friendly a spect scan is?
