After two years dairy free plus 6 months soy and wheat free my son was

recently reintroduced to small amounts of dairy and soy and within days had a

virus that kept him out of school and then a few more minor one's in quick

succession. He has tested positive for reactions to both again so we are

back to a dairy/soy free life.

I love this group, I'm learning a lot! I'm trying to get my son on this

diet

as best as possible. We have been on the G/C free for a few months 2 years

ago, I did not see a change. Until a year ago he had Silk soy milk in his

bottles as I found he was very gassy with the organic whole milk he got

after going off formula & breast milk. I have seen major reactions to

splenda (uncontrolled urination) All sugars, he wants fruit ALL the time.

Apples and oranges mostly. Fruit must be hidden in the cupboards. Juice is

a

no no over one small 4 oz box a day to hide probitics in or he will have

uncontrollable diarrhea.

I found the tofutti cutie bars at a store near me and was so happy but

after

he ate 2 of them he got big dark rings under his eyes, his face got puffy

and he paced while looking down and wouldn't respond for some time then had

to take a very restless nap in which I'm not sure he actually slept for 45

mins. Very similar reaction to when he got a bee sting. (I keep an epi pen

in the kitchen)

So UGH just like everyone I'm frustrated and cannot seem to find things to

feed him. Suggestions most welcome. Also do you think it was the soy or the

coconut in the ice cream bars?

One more thing as I cram my post full XD Anyone else that their child gets

rashes, what kind? and any pics? I don't think what my son gets is

impetigo.

It comes with heat (which he cannot tolerate) and stress.

Thanks for ALL input! Jess

Jess,

I am by no means the expert here on food, but I feel your stress. We too

lock all foods up from our son. It kills me to deprive him, but if this

works like everyone on this lists says it will, then there is no going back.

We cleaned up his diet to perfection over the last 9 months and still did

not see results in labs or behavior or physically with the dark circles.

However after going through P/N testing (which the verdict is still out on

in our minds) we discovered that the very benign foods that he has had

everyday for the last nine months (rice and sweet potato) are highly

allergic foods for him. SO . . . every child is different and reacts to

different foods. We absolutely cannot have soy and would not try coconut

milk either until the dark circles and labs are clear.

Hope this helps.

Rereading my post it does sound like he is much younger. He will actually be 7

this summer. Yea it took oral surgery last summer for him to break the bottle

habit. I fondly recall he ate anything I fed him until he was nearly two. It's

just nuts, I have no clue what is left to eat after eliminating everything I

think could be a trigger. Ah well, I'll just keep plugging away at trying. I am

in the fund-raising portion of my journey so I can get him to the NNY clinic. I

bet when I have real medical help I will have at least more support. ty for the

replies -hugs-

The rash could be the coconut milk, but if it comes in the heat, it *could be

heat rash* OR if it comes on the arms and legs mainly (and sometimes buttocks)

with some of the rash having hard white pimply heads, THEN it could be keratosis

pilaris. You can google picture online, but most of them look worse than my

son's KP. It is caused from an overproduction of keratin.

The rash around the mouth could have been due to cold or virus.

I don't think that's likely, because it has happened at least 5-6 times in

the last several months, almost always after my husband had him for the

weekend. It has to be a food infraction.

I think your responding to me.... No the rash he's always delt with on and off

since maybe 2 years old...that and freakishly scary hives and a roseola rash

that he's gotten 4 times in the past, last time as recently as last summer.

But this heat/stress rash thing is different. It comes on his legs more often

but can come anyplace on him, face, arms, anyplace. Looks like a spider bite or

a mosquito bite at first, nothing to worry about...until it swells and gets

horribly inflamed. Then if it is not cared for by me manually keeping him cool

and calm and putting mupirocin on it it will become more pronounced in the

center (the swelling is 1-2 inches in diameter around this wee " bite " ) and will

weep a bit, no real color to the liquid but perhaps yellowish. Then it gets

messy, looks exactly like a brown recluce spider bite when it starts eating the

flesh. This only got that far the first time it happened and we rushed him to

the ER and bug bombed the house thinking it was spiders lol. The scar was there

for 2 years on his calf :( Yes with this he gets feverish and ill. I'm chocking

it up to his immune system, have for 4 years.

Hey have you ever had that wound cultured?  It sounds like mrsa staph.  Staph

is often mis-diagnosed as a spider bite, even at the pediatrician. (Mupirocin

is one of the treatments for it, too.) It will also cause rashes around the

necrosing wounds as well.  If it hasn't been cultured, then it really needs to

be the next time you see one, preferably when it starts looking like a bite, or

has some pus in it.    And once you've had mrsa staph, your skin tends to be

colonized with it, so you get it again and again. The wounds often scar, too.

But if you know you have it, then you can take steps to reduce it, washing

with a special soap, and especially washing sheets frequently w/hot water and

tide w/bleach.  Actually, I'd recommend that you do that at least weekly (if

you don't that is - I didn't always) anyway, since staph is all around us as it

is.

Anyway, if it is mrsa staph, then you're going to need antibiotics for it too,

in addition to mupirocin, to help it clear much faster.  An extended course may

also reduce future infections.

My son also gets the ring rash around his mouth.  It is also usually diet

related, and it particularly happens when he takes antibiotics, like he's

sensitive to them too.  I don't know what it is or how to get rid of it.  It

goes away on it's own eventually.  It looks awful and hurts my heart, even

though it doesn't particularly bother him (except when his lips start cracking

too), because it's this loud raging signal that something is off.

Hope that helps.  If you find a certain cause of this mouth rash ring, please

let me know!  Please get that 'rash' cultured.

Actually, there is a lot left to give once you remove gluten, casein, and even

soy. There is still: fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, and fresh meats (all in

purest form, but you can steam and cook in a variety of ways with just these.)

There are many great tasting breads andd mixes, if you go that roue, that are

gluten and casein free.

It really was not hard for my son, it was hard for *me* because *I* dod not like

going without all the processed foods; they were too easy for me to make in a

hurry or on the run.

What I figured out was eating correctly kept us from going to all doctors and

being on the go all the time; so, once you fix the diet, you have fixed many

other problems.

In that case, I am hearing mastocytosis (cutaneous, at least). My 3 year old has

that. Be careful with NSAIDS (tylenol, motrin, aspirin) and when the rash

occurs, give dye free loratidine (Rite Aid has a grape flavor that is clear over

the counter.) My 3 yr-old, which only weighs in at (now 26, was 21 before the

antihistamines), takes 1 tsp 2-3 times a day. It is an H2 antihistmaine, which

means the sleepy part has been removed; however, the first week, of taking it he

did get sleepy, but after that nothing...he was fine.

But you definitely sound like you are speaking of mastocytosis (The Mastocytosis

Society can help you). One way to check for sure is these odd loking bumps/hives

will present with what is called the DARIER'S SIGN. What you do is rub and

irritate the hive and see if it turns blistery like a chicken pox looking spot

(it will shrink back down if it does :); if so, positively mast cell issues. We

all have mast cells, but in moderated number usually. If there are in large and

excessive number, then one has mastocytosis. They are related to immune system

dysfunction. It s rare, but apparently, it is increasingly more common.

Let me know if I can help anymore.

I'm reading everything you are all saying and thank you so much! I'm trying so

cultured. I swear if there is a day over 70 he will have it, the hotter the

worse. I fear this summer. The online pics of mastocytosis and staph each kind

of look like it, then again google pics are either extreme or very little. The

mastocytosis looks more like it from some of the pics. Yes he also reacts to

real bug bites but real bug bites itch him rather than hurt him. the only thing

I've found to keep the skeeters away is OFF family care towlettes. They have

DEET, but it's all I've found to do anything. In past years I have read many

articles on abnormal reactions and mosquito bites. I remember taking one to a

doctor we no longer use about it and the immune system link. Damn if we hadn't

all been dismissed about our concerns for years....

After this last rash episode he has regressed. Now after I bought all this goats

milk stuff today I have to go read everything you all said XD

Do any of you have your child on meds, especially for aggressive behavior?

Re: Food is Infuriating me V_V

I'm chocking

it up to his immune system, have for 4 years.

heat rash* OR if it comes on the arms and legs mainly (and sometimes buttocks)

with some of the rash having hard white pimply heads, THEN it could be keratosis

pilaris. You can google picture online, but most of them look worse than my

son's KP. It is caused from an overproduction of keratin.
