Guest guest
You might as well bring a car seat. As for food, get a note from your doctor or security may impound it. Best. He is 4yo, about 35 lbs, around 38 " tall. Or can he sit in a seat like adults? In other words, is there any way we can get out of lugging a car seat around? We probably can't, as we will most likely need one for taking a taxi to and from the airport (can't they just provide one?...can you tell weI REALLY don't want to carry one around?). Also, does anyone know how we can we bring his special diet food and beverages on the plane? He is on a strict allergy free diet (GF/CF/SF, etc) for now and airplane/airport snacks are not an option. Last, anyone know where I may find a flying social story? I found ONE link on line that was no longer available once I clicked on it. Thank you all for helping us prepare for this adventure. Guest guest
You won't need a car seat on the plane, but you will in a car. (The shoulder strap is the danger for children in cars--airplane seats don't have shoulder straps). The airlines are very accomodating now with car seats--they'll take them when you check in, or even checked at the gate (esp useful for the stroller/car seat assemblies). I'm not sure about renting one when you get to Hawaii--even if available, might prefer one he is familiar with. I'm not sure what the rules are for children in taxis--I imagine taxis are exempt, so if you aren't renting a car in Hawai'i, and you've got a safe way to get him to the airport, you could probably not take the car seat. We always took a car seat with us, a couple of decades ago when the airlines weren't used to it. Being rear-ended on a freeway convinced us that we'd done the right thing, and the hassle was a minor inconvenience. As for the food, it's always wise to bring your own. There might be a problem with liquids, so check with the airline about that. They may want a letter from a doctor, for instance. No problem with solids. Anything that might be hard to replace you should have in your carry-on bag, if at all possible. You might also want to find out if there is a place in Honolulu (?) where you can get your special items. If they are reliable, you might not have to travel with an entire trip's worth of provisions, as long as you have a back-up plan. (A box that could be shipped FedEx overnight by a friend, for example.) There are plenty of people in Hawai'i on restricted diets. I don't know the names of local sources, but I may be able to find out from my sister, who lives there. Another possibility would be to find out from the distributor who supplies you locally if they have retailers in Hawai'i. Guest guest
You can bring your food and beverages as long as you have a letter from your doctor who can certify that your son is on special diet. As long as you have a letter they do not restrict you anymore. They will bring your food to a special machine to be tested by special machine and paper. Definitely, They will never touch your food for hygiene reason. They have special machine to put the whole container into the machine. Normally, I packed my food in his thermal lunch box. He does not need a car seat on a plane. I brought my car seat and checked it in to be used in my rented car. What he needs is to buckle him up as we , adults, do. I hope it is helpful. 1u ________________________________ From: Tamela & Geoff Cole <tamelageoff_cole@...> tamelageoff_cole@... Guest guest
I am not sure what type of beverages you want to bring for your child on the plane but we take an empty plastic bottle like the large Gatorade ones, then fill it up at the airport once we have cleared security. We usually fill it with something like lemonade but if you want a milk substitute you could take the powder versions and then just get bottled water. You should also be able to find juice boxes at most airports once past security. I am not sure about your child's size but the only way we could get our youngest to sleep on the plane was if we brought the car seat. That alone made it worth the lugging. Guest guest
I generally start giving decongestant a day or 2 before the flight so that his ears aren't clogged and they don't hurt and something he can suck on- even though they are older (not infants)clearing your ears is important for comfort on the plane > > > First of all, we have really loved and benefitted from all of your > > responses to my prior post. Guest guest
Yeah I would say if you crash in a plane that you are screwed either way. > > > > > First of all, we have really loved and benefitted from all of your > > > responses to my prior post. Guest guest
I just wanted to offer my two cents on traveling by plane long distance. We have traveled twice across country from Texas to New York with our son when he was 3 and 4. We did use the car seat on the plane. However, since your flight will be much longer, I don't know if this would be the best bet. We like using my son's car seat because it kept him in his seat and contained. It was also nice to not stress about having the right car seat available once we arrived to pick up our rental car. About your concerns for the ears, we have used garlic/mullein oil to help open the ear canal and free it from any wax build up. This advice was given to me when we were preparing our son for his hard chamber HBOT. You can find this item at the health food store. It smells of garlic but really works. The parents in our dive team who did not use this had problems with their kids ears hurting. I'd start doing it at least 3 days prior to the flight and try to use it 2-3 times daily for the best results. I would do one of the doses after my son went to sleep at night. If you choose to do this, be prepared with some extra paper towels as it is a little messy. Also I would remove his shirt when doing this. Best of luck, Cristine
